Mel Gibson speaks, talks about plans for his career and his next film

For the first time since the spousal abuse allegations and the racist audio tapes that subsequently appeared online, Mel Gibson spoke to a journalist in a lengthy, open and honest interview. I'll leave a lot of the tabloid fodder for you to read on your own (he doesn't shy away from any questions), but let's instead focus on the movie-related questions.

Asked if he feels that his repeated controversies could hurt his acting career, Gibson says, "I don’t care if I don’t act anymore." When asked if he's serious about that he adds, "It really is true."

But it seems we probably won't get to that point. He's already got HOW I SPENT MY SUMMER VACATION coming up later this year and reveals he's in talks to star in the next film from writer/director Randall Wallace, with whom Gibson collaborated on for BRAVEHEART.

I’m going to go work for Randy Wallace again. He’s got this script and he’s had it for years. He wrote some book and he’s adapted it to a script. And it’s almost like Alexander Dumas — like that swashbuckler kind of stuff....It’s total bodice-ripping swashbuckling stuff, but it’s funny. It’s funny and yet it’s got really good serious undertones too. Randy writes a decent script. And I responded to it right away. I thought this is hilarious. I’ve got to do this. And I’m not the main guy in the film -- which is great.

Gibson is most likely talking about "Love and Honor," the 2007 novel written by Wallace. The film takes place during the Revolutionary War and follows a young colonial soldier sent by Benjamin Franklin to Russia in the hopes of convincing Catherine the Great to deny the British request for Russian troops. He's aided on his journey by a disgraced Russian nobleman, which is likely the role Gibson would play.

Before deciding whether or not you care about THE BEAVER or any of Gibson's future projects, read the interview with the actor/director at Deadline and see if you're ready to forgive the man (or at least allow yourself to enjoy his career).

This whole “scandal” has been ridiculous from the start. First off, the general public has no right to invade someone’s personal life, even if they’re celebrities. Sure, the tabloids may make big bucks from doing so, but that doesn’t make it right. Second, he’s only human, and no less flawed than any of us. We all have problems at one time or another, and I doubt we’d want to have them...

We all have problems at one time or another, and I doubt we’d want to have them broadcast over the internet. Finally: Rashomon. You can’t pass judgement on someone without knowing the full story, and a recorded phone call doesn’t show anything more than one side. Now, I’m not saying that the guy doesn’t have issues, but for fuck’s sake, let him work them out on his own.

Would really want to see that Viking movie he had planned before. A movie similar to "Apocalypto", realistic, gritty and with a powerful story. Or even better a combination of that film and Breaveheart.

Whatever...
I'll give the cat props for being open with what has happened, but I really don't want to know his personal life, or any actor or actress's for that matter. The more about an actor's personal life I know the more it takes me out of their past or future performances. I have to literally not watch a movie with an actor for a while just so I can remember the work and not the person. Does this...

people are fucking retarded mules for hating on anyone they don't know (i.e. Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise, etc.) for things they've chose to do or have reportedly chose to do in their PERSONAL life. enough already. Who gives a shit?

Looking forward to more Mel, Edge of Darkness was surprisingly badass, Beaver looks like it COULD be a pretty good dramady as well.

It's fucking "retarded" for someone like Gibson to hate an entire race for no reason... an opinion can be based on someone just being a dick too. Just because he may be a talented dick shouldn't buy him this much cred.

The man seems genuine in this interview and his personal life shouldn't affect one's enjoyment of his films. But, beyond that; People do and say stupid shit under stressful circumstances. We don't know the real story behind his crazed voice messages and it's none of our business. The fact that people think they're so much better than Gibson is ridiculous. I say the word "fag," I'm not homophobic. I use the word "nigger," I'm not racist. People say things when they're under pressure or when they're angry. People act like they've never committed a moral transgression or said a bad word and they judge people based off the loose information they hear. These are the same people that say Woody Allen married his stepdaughter...He didn't. You people should think about it like this; If you yell at your spouse at home, should your employer fire you?

I understand why people hate on Roman Polanski (I still watch his films), but this Mel Gibson hate is ridiculous and misguided.

I'd be more willing to forgive him if he were doing something to correct the situation, but he's not shown that he is sorry about anything. He clearly has several issues that he needs help with. Whether he is good at his job or not doesn't dismiss the fact that he is a major Hollywood star, one that many many people pay attention to, one who should be a fine example of a leading man in Hollywood. He doesn't have the luxury of doing what he's done and burying it. And then here he is talking about how he doesn't even care about acting anymore. He sounds like he's being fairly arrogant of all of this. I've certainly liked Mel's movies and even enjoyed Heart of Darkness (which I saw before all of this ugliness). But, I'm sorry, I can't just say "oh, he's a great talent and everyone makes mistakes, so I'll forgive him". His behavior has been way out of line and it needs to be corrected.

I'm not gonna read the full interview. I once listened to a mash-up of that phone conversation and regretted it. When an actor does what he did, it's reasonable to expect some fallout from it. But Mel was never a saint. True, he used to be better at hiding it or kidding himself, but he's a deeply damaged person. He's still a good actor and director, but he has problems that are only worse...

But Mel was never a saint. True, he used to be better at hiding it or kidding himself, but he's a deeply damaged person. He's still a good actor and director, but he has problems that are only worse because he's a celebrity. But he's been a part of so many great movies that I personally refuse to let that be diminished by what he may be like in real life. By that same token, if someone doesn't want to work with him, that's also OK. I like Joel_Kirk's comparison with Polanski, who is arguably my favorite director, but I wouldn't sign a petition to release him if he ever got arrested again for what he did. I find the double-standard of Hollywood disgusting. But there is real life, and there is movie life. And there are actors from way back who said some very bad things and weren't castrated for it, because back then such sentiments might have been commonplace. It won't keep me from watching their movies if the movies are good.

Wasn't Mel attached to direct a viking movie at some point? I like Mel the actor, but love him as a director. The man has his issues, we all do, but as long as he learns from them and moves on, that is all anyone can ask.

As an African-American, I don't condone his usage of the 'n' word...but, I do separate the film from the person.

I still like Mad Max and Mad Max 2.

Similar to Roman Polanski, and Woody Allen...(If they have projects that interest me, I watch them. What they do in their personal life is their business.

I'm finding it hard to decide how I really feel about Mel these days. He's one of those actors that I really want to like. I've grown up, eagerly awaiting each film he makes. I'd even consider myself somewhat of a Mel Gibson fan boy. Then he says and does things which makes me feel like I really don't know this person at all. Suddenly the guy who I've rooted for and laughed with is telling me he has all this hate for me and my family. How can I just dismiss that? Maybe some people can separate the man from the role he plays, but I guess I’m not that enlightened. His words and actions felt personal to me. It felt like I was conned into liking someone who secretly hated me, but needed me for his career. With that said, I’m not looking for an apology. What good would it do? It wouldn’t mean he suddenly feels any differently. So here I remain. I want to like him, and I want to watch his films, but his words and actions are a dagger in my back that I feel whenever I try to separate the actor from the man, and I don’t know if it’s something that can be undone.

I never followed the whole controversy surround Gibson's racial rantings. To me, it was typical Hollywood Actor BS. Yet, the fallout for his actions have been more server than other Hollywood Stars that have done worse. I mean if Woody Allen and Roman Polanski can still work with Hollywood A-List actors then why not Mel? I think what Polanski and Allen did (pederasts) was worse. But that's...

His personal life is just that to me, and while it sucks that he does/ thinks these things, it in no way deminishes what I think of his ablities in front of and behind the camera.

"The Beaver" looks brillant, and I hope his next film is something he can sink into.

the tapes always seemed blatantly guile to me.
The reason why is because of how calm and holier than thou Oksana sounded. His comments were crazy but we all can think of a path which would lead us to an equal frenzy. She definitely has a tinge of b*tch in her voice too. And her history shows she isn't an innocent victim. I don't agree with many of Gibson's thoughts but I'm not going to judge him based on a fervored rant.
