Melissa Leo holds the Bible close in this new poster for Red State

Dec. 30, 2010by: Niki Stephens

Curiosity is high for Kevin Smith's next cinematic pursuit RED STATE. The first teaser trailer for the film was a long departure from the usual stuff that Smith delivers. It will be interesting to see what he brings to the horror genre.

That said, the newest poster for RED STATE follows the same design as the first two. In this one it's Melissa Leo (THE FIGHTER) as Sarah clutching her Bible close gazing into the unknown. I really like how the overlaying texture looks like a folded up piece of paper that's spent too long is someone's back pocket.

This particular character poster was released on the site, Ma's Meatloaf thanks to a donation of $1,000 to Eliza Dushku's THARCE-Gulu cause. The donation will go to help former child soldiers heal from the traumatic events of war and sexual enslavement. If you are curious about the charity or would like to donate yourself, head here.

Official Sundance synopsis:

"Ever since Clerks (cowinner of the Filmmakers Trophy at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival), Kevin Smith has been known for his sharp, subversive, comedic writing. He shifts from comedy to horror with Red State and aptly demonstrates that good writing transcends genre. Red State begins by following three horny high-school boys who come across an online ad from an older woman looking for a gang bang. Boys being boys, they hit the road to satisfy their libidinal urges. But what begins as a fantasy takes a dark turn as they come face-to-face with a terrifying holy force with a fatal agenda. Instead of relying on archetypes and predictable formulas, Smith meticulously fashions all-too-real characters, utilizing exceptional performances (notably by Michael Parks) and an intelligent script. His realistic style gives the film an intimate feeling, heightening the terror to biblical proportions. Red State is a shocking new kind of horror film that aggressively confronts higher powers and extreme doctrines with a vengeance."

Sustaining my hope for this movie

I hated Melissa Leo's character in The Fighter (due to her amazing acting), and I am totally biased towards Kevin Smith (he answered a question of mine at one of his Q&A's). That being said, I'm still stalling judgement until I actually see the movie (which I'm sure I will). Oh, and I could say Drag Me To Hell for the horror movie. Got to love when Raimi embraces his inner campiness!

Good horror film, Not a one in 10 years or more

I can't name any good horror films @ all. I looked at some of the others people listed & sorry but just about all named were complete Sh*t. I haven't seen "Devil" yet, so maybe I have some hope. As far as ones I didn't hate, I would have to say "Drag Me to Hell." It at least had some pretty good performances by the creepy lady, Alison Lohman (why is she not a big star already?) & Justin Long but the script was mediocre @ best. I like Kevin Smith, but I zero feeling toward this new venture.

I enjoyed Devil (although it felt a bit "cheap" with all of the complete darkness segments). But I might have to go back to Triangle, if that counts as a horror movie.

Giving Smith a Chance

I'll admit it: I'm a fan of Kevin Smith, and most of his films (Mallrats, Clerks, and Dogma stand out), but I'm not a fan of everything he does and says. I thought that Clerks 2 was a bust, and Jersey Girl was a cheezy, film with little thought put into the storylline. That being said, he has zigged instead of zagged, and I think that this could be an interesting film. The trailer looked good (not great, but good), the plot seems like a [link] storyline, but if Kevin Smith is stepping

I'm gonna get beat to shit on this one but as far as horror movies go...I was very impressed with the unrated version of Rob Zombie's Halloween II. There was something about it that was very realistic with how it dealt with these characters dealing with such a traumatic experience two years later. I thought it was all handled beautifully. Now let the thumbs down on this post begin...

I'm not really digging the Red State posters...but I am interested in the movie nonetheless.

Last horror movie I liked was the remake of I Spit on Your Grave...beats this found footage bullshit that is so popular nowadays.

I am a unappologetic Kevin Smith fan and have been for the last 14 years or so. I have found something to enjoy on each of his movies no mattter how "bad" the may have been considered by the public. Yes that even means Jersey Girl, Zach and Miri and even Cop Out, Which I thought was a milestone in DP Dave Kline's career even if it was a black mark in Smith's.
That being said I am intrigued by the direction Smith is taking in his career and love to see that he is reinventing his film making

No Jay. No Bob. No Affleck or Lee. he is out of his comfort zone entirely and I applaud him for it.
Best horror flick? I finally got around to watching the original Black Christmas... pretty creepy.

I like the...

early indie work of smith, the new stuff id complete balls. i'll probably watch it because i like the dude, he's a fat bastard who has a decent wife who's making money in a very superficial industry, but everything after dogma is so mediocre that it is borderline garbage. it's the same for the rest of his crew, except for matt and ben.
re extra tidbit;
would movies like 'the switch', 'last air bender', 'dinner for schmucks' and anything that Kathrine Heigl has been in count, cause they were

The rest of his crew? Have you not seen the growth DP Dave Kline has shown behind the lens? Cop Out wasn't a great flick but you cant argue that it din't look fantastic.

Movie looks interesting to say the least.

As for the last good horror movie I saw, it has to be "The Crazies" and "Paranormal Activity 2".

Paranormal Activity 2 a "horror" movie. You should be a stand up comedian.

Go Foreign

As Red State looks quite appealling, I still say most good horror is being made overseas.
I reference Ils, Inside, and Martyrs.

Frankly, Smith makes you care about his mostly ridiculous characters, so if he can do that in the horror genre, it'll work. No question.

I dunno

I have a feeling this movie may end up trying too hard at what it wants to be. I read how it begins, 3 kids looking for a spot for a orgy. I dunno, could be corky rather than scary, time will tell

HOUSE OF THE DEVIL was the last great horror film. As for RED STATE, Ill wait and read the reviews Smith really hasnt made anything memorable since CHASING AMY, mainly just watching out of curiosity.

Yes you can totally deduce that a movie is shit just by less than two minutes of footage.

Soundless footage mind you.

"Yes you can totally deduce that a movie is shit just by less than two minutes of footage."

Studios seem to think so; that's why they release trailers. Within a couple of minutes, people watching trailers are thinking "That looks good" or "That looks bad", yes?

Wow. Leo looks completely different in this compared to when she's in "The Fighter." As for the last good horror film I saw, it might be "The Last Exorcism." I saw it in the beginning of December.

The Crazies

Personally, I really dug The Crazies. It was genuinely creepy and didn't pull its punches. It was very well done in my opinion.
