MGM takes down another, is the next Bond film canceled?

Jul. 6, 2010by:

It's been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride with MGM.

The stress of the studios financial woes are causing some rather anticipated projects a hell of a lot of problems.

One of the films in limbo is THE HOBBIT. Today we reported on Ian McKellan's frustration with the film's production. McKellan is a busy man and is trying to get filming moving along. Before this, the delays got to potential director, Guillermo del Toro who gracefully bowed out as director.

Now, Ain't it Cool News is reporting that MGM has axed development on the new Bond film. Site creator Harry Knowles doesn't go into much detail on the subject other than to say that MGM has royally f*cked up. He says that if someone doesn't buy this studio than we may never see a Bond film helmed by Sam Mendes and written by Peter Morgan (FROST/NIXON). Knowles begs for someone, anyone to run this studio properly instead of selling the pieces of the studio thereby messing up good films from getting made.

Is MGM really f*cked up beyond repair? Honestly, it's not going to come down to the fact that we will never see another Bond film again. We will one day, just set up at somewhere else. I was really anticipating the next adventure of Daniel Craig as 007, but with everything going on at MGM we won't be seeing it anytime soon.

Let the bitching begin...

Extra Tidbit: What the hell is going on in the film industry these days?! It's all 3D conversions, remakes, and delays on potentially awesome films.

New management needed...

MGM executives...wake the fuck up! You've been great up to a few years ago but this is going too far.

I know Bond will never die as it will move on to another studio but the fans will have to wait for years and that really sucks.

My message to MGM therefore is either sell the rights for Bond to another studio so they can make the film or fix your act.

I dont know how movie studios can fuck shit up. Craig has been golden as 007. Quit throwning millions at shit movies and start putting out some decent stuff.

The American economy is going to collapse and cause a disaster that will be beyond fixing this time. The "cult of wealth and privilege" are probably pulling their $$$ from investing in most of these film projects for fear of mediocre returns at the box office and a general unease with both the franchise and or film in question as well as MGM's current situation. We're gonna see more big studios go down the same path I think, real soon.

Not really sure why you got a negative mark Doc,your preaching the truth, the double dip is coming and it will be either the end of this year or next year.

"You Were Good In Your Time"

No one will buy MGM with a $4B debt attached...NO ONE.

Last I heard, Sony is hungry for the Bond franchise and will just wait patiently until the inevitable bankruptcy happens, and then the fire-sale of their assets and properties commence. MGM is done.

Man, this news really sucks, I was really looking forward to Bond 23. Dammit MGM, how much longer is this going to go on while many great future films and franchises are thrown to the wolves?

Morons.........

Why doesn't MGM just sell the rights to the hobbit? That way we'll get that black hole of a production started and MGM will have some money to keep afloat for a bit.

Only a matter of time I guess. They sat on these properties for so long within nothing substantial being done, something was going to give. Just a shame really.

Good. After the shit storm that was Quantem of Solace, I look forward to at least five years of "solace" to wipe that atrocity from memory.

Bond is the last thing needing to be rushed. Let it simmer and let MGM burn.

This studio is so stupid. When you're too broke to greenlight two sure things then it's time to go. AOL/Time Warner has more money than God, they should just buy this bitch of a lion and be done with it.

WAIT A SEC

I can't wait another year without Bond, especially with Peter Morgan behind the script.
I always thought the Bond producers can go with any studio they please. So what is stopping them now?

Hm...

Would selling the rights to Bond, back-catalogue and all, not pay off a decent chunk of debt? Fuck these guys, if the next Bond doesn't move forward soon, I bet Daniel Craig will have moved on by the time it does. :(

Yeah I was afraid of that too. I remember that when I was a kid I waited a very long time for a new Bond movie after Dalton's License to Kill. Then GoldenEye came along several years after that movie.

MGM needs to get it together! They actually need another Bond movie to bring in some cash flow. Regardless of the review, Bond films generally generate quite a lot from foreign box office. Why can't they think of it? Even if it's a 'bomb', it's still generate a lot from foreign box office. Crud.

Sorry for double post but this article kind of reminded me of Marvel Comics in mid 1990s when they sold most of their characters' right to different studios. We might even see MGM sells Bond's rights to any other studio.

I hate to be the pessimistic one, but unless MGM can get bought out by another studio we simply won't see another Bond or The Hobbit for a very, very long time. MGM would have to sell the properties themselves since A) they have no money and B) Nobody can afford MGM'S 6 BILLION dollar price tag.

Recession's a bitch.

Old News

Heard about the next Bond movie being cancelled ages ago. Not sure if there is a time frame for Daniel Craig's contract, but he signed on for at least 3 (maybe 4) films) so there is still time to another one if MGM gets straightened out. MGM is also the company behind the Stargate franchise and has put two direct-to-dvd Stargate movies (Stargate:Revolution and Stargate: Extinction) on indefinite hold (also partly due to the drop in dvd sales across the board) but they are still producing the

MGM ...

This whole business is killing me. The BOnd franchise, like many of you, is near and dear to my heart and Daniel Craig has been the best thing to happen to it in a long time.

Just get your house in order MGM, don't let potentially amazing films fall between the cracks!
