Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone to star in the Rocky spin-off Creed

Jul. 24, 2013by: Alex Maidy

It is the spin-off I never knew that I really wanted! CREED! Sylvester Stallone will be returning to the ROCKY franchise, but in a totally different capacity than ever before. FRUITVALE STATION director Ryan Coogler had always expressed interest in the idea for a movie centered on the Apollo Creed character and now with the buzz around his debut film, his dream may be coming true.

Deadline is reporting that CREED will be written by Coogler and Aaron Covington with Coogler also set to direct. He is courting his FRUITVALE STATION star Michael B. Jordan to star in the title role with Sylvester Stallone returning as Rocky Balboa. But, this time, Rocky will be the grizzled veteran training Creed to the big time.

The intention is for Jordan to play the grandson of Apollo Creed (played in the early movies by Carl Weathers). Raised in an upper-crust home thanks to the ring riches earned by his grandfather, the young man doesn’t have to box and his family doesn’t want him to. Yet, he has the natural instinct and gifts and potential that made his grandfather the heavyweight champion until Rocky Balboa took his crown in 1979′s Rocky II. Creed’s grandson needs a mentor and turns to Balboa, who is out of boxing completely and not eager to return.

Balboa was Creed’s greatest opponent and later his best friend until that fateful moment when Balboa heeded Creed’s wishes and didn’t stop the fight against the Soviet fighter Drago (played by Dolph Lungdren in 1985′s Rocky IV) before the giant delivered what proved to be a fatal beating.

I love the idea of taking Rocky into a different direction while also keeping with the continuity of the series. Jordan is a hot commodity right now, as is Coogler, so if they want to get this made now is the perfect time. Tapping into the immortal death of Carl Weathers' character in ROCKY IV would be a great segue into showcasing the idolatry that a child can have for an elder.

The goal is to make the movie soon, which it would need to be if Jordan is still being considered for FANTASTIC FOUR and before Stallone gets going with THE EXPENDABLES 3. Either way, count me excited. This is definitely a good idea.

this is cool, but too bad Creed is dead in the films cause I'd MUCH rather see Apollo and Rocky in another film together. Too bad Weathers can't be in this!

What I'm most excited for

...is they will have to reference Rocky IV! Either a mention or a plot device of Apollo Creed being killed in the ring by Ivan Drago! Also, just for fun, I went ahead and made a fanmade poster for this: [link]

Sounds awesome! I always thought an Apollo spin-off or a prequel of sorts focusing on Mickey would be very interesting and provide even more depth to the character(s). I never thought either would exist outside of my mind though. Seeing Sly reprise his iconic role in that capacity will be great. I also never felt much was said about Apollo's death...it just sort of happened, Rocky beat Drago and that was that. Some reflection will be nice.

Oh no.

To break the lovely seal on the Rocky character that was "Rocky Balboa" just to do a very lukewarm sounding spin off ... please don't. It doesn't sound bad, just no where good enough to be worth bringing the character back. It would be like if The Rolling Stones gave a final concert, and then Mick Jagger toured with Fall Out Boy on back up vocals.

Any chance to see Stallone return to play Rocky is awesome, IMO. And this way it won't be a "true" sequel where all the fans are expecting him to get in the ring again.

Also, I personally loved all the Rocky movies. All of them were awesome, IMO. With part 5 still being good, to me, but not the greatest.

I love Rocky.

Love, love, love love him.

A genuinely timeless character and even though the tone changed from a seventies uplifting drama to an eighties pop culture music video he still managed to seem relevant, heartfelt and genuine. I never hated Rocky V, it had genuine ambition to do justice to that character and take him back to his roots, but I do agree that it is a very weak entry and was a bit of a lame duck ending to the series.

Rocky Balboa came along, and against all odds, much like Rocky himself, won us all over one last time and put that character to bed in the best possible way.

There is nothing this film can add that's worth going ahead with. The idea of seeing Rocky on screen again is tempting, but we've seen Rocky as a mentor in Rocky V, and for better or worse that film was made and that idea was fully explored and does not need another go around. Especially with Rocky Balboa tying up any loose ends and ideas that Rocky V didn't quite follow through on.

i mean yea sure I'd like to see what happened to Apollo's children perhaps, but if Apollo died in 1985 then this kid would've had to been at least 5 or so years old to even remember him (plus Apollo didn't seem old enough to have grandkids) and which would make the kid in his thirties at this point. Unless they go with the angle that he never knew his grandfather other than in footage and the media, in which case..again what's the point? Where do you stop with spin-offs like that? Why not get Lundgren back to do a spin-off of a 60 year old Ivan Drago whilst we're at it? Actually come to think of it Drago could probably make an appearance in this new story apologising and making amends to the family.....

....ah shit I may have just talked myself into this.

I just want to see that inevitable scene where you know the grandson is gonna ask him why he didnt stop the fight and hear what Rocky's response will be.

I would totally watch this

Wasn't Rocky 5 an attempt to come to a natural ending for the Rocky series? Though I enjoyed the movie, I remember many not being satisfied with that as an ending. Balboa was a great way to cap it off and for that reason alone I'd like Balboa to be the last movie of the series - I mean that "stuff in the basement" angle...the father to son talk about being responsible for yourself...the stuff with Paulie (deleted scenes and all)... all truly emotional stuff - and I'd hate for another movie

Still, I do like the synopsis of this potential new movie...I particularly like the "the young man doesn't have to box and his family doesn't want him to. This COULD be good

Stallone came a long way from some so-so "Rocky" sequels, to a big surprise with what I thought was a finale with "Rocky Balboa". Personally, it's a good ending to the Balboa story and should all end there. Be careful with adding more, cause you'll add on to a series until it gets wrecked. It still could be good though.

I could see this.

This sounds like a great plot. As the last film showed, Rocky hasn't lost his touch, but he's too old to step back into the ring. Jordan is a talented kid, and I think he's got a hell of a career ahead of him. I honestly saw the Rocky series dead after the last film, but if they were going to try and continue, this is how you do it.

I gotta say, this thread has more funnier posts than I've ever seen all at once. . .

Creed's first opponent? A dead horse.

Does Hollywood realize how bad boxing has become? Corrupt. 8 million champs in each weight class. Being KO'd by that MMA/Ultimate Fighting or whatever they're calling it . . .

And am I the only one who seriously, for REAL, wants a crazy, over-the-top Cobra sequel?

DIE HARD SPINOFF

Starring Argyle the limo driver. After surviving the Nakatomi terrorist incident, he was inspired by John Mclane to become a cop. But it wasn't all champagne and teddy bears. 30 years later, he's just a washed up private detective trying to put food on his families table. On Christmas Eve, while doing some last minute shopping at Wal-Mart, a group of terrorists highjack the store. Their leader is John McLane... and all he wants for Christmas is his family.

Honestly, not a bad idea. Michael B. Jordan certainly seems to be on the up and up. There's even buzz about a possible Oscar nomination for Fruitvale station, but since awards season is still some time away I think the Academy would have forgotten his performance by then.

This article got me thinking...

Why the hell didn't the Creeds help out Rocky when the IRS took everything? Was Mrs. Creed still pissed that Rocky waited a little too long to throw in the towel? That her screams of "STOP THE FIGHT!!!!!!!!!" went unanswered? I know it wasn't exactly an "eye for an eye," but Rocky kinda/sorta' defended the death of his Brother From Another Mother, while getting his brains scrambled in the process. Shame on the Creeds; I'm sure they had an Oprah sized guest-house in their backyard, or at the

This is a good idea

Give us more Rocky - following the last film is a good idea. The last movie was a GOOD end to the "Rocky" series and this allows us more of the character in a very believable plot line.

CREED

While it's hard to think there's any legitimate reason to bring Rocky back following his perfect send-off in 2006, the truth is this is preferable to a remake... though it is technically a remake of ROCKY V with a touch of the first act of ROCKY IV (A comfortable Creed yearning to fight). Given the talent involved, I like to think that the Rocky mythology could certainly live on gracefully.
