Michael B. Jordan talks Fantastic Four & Rocky spin-off Creed

08.15.2014

In a recent interview with The Source, Michael B. Jordan talked a little about Josh Trank's THE FANTASTIC FOUR, and says the ROCKY spin-off CREED is "definitely happening."

The Source wanted to know if Michael B. Jordan was glad when he was finally allowed to talk about THE FANTASTIC FOUR after the cast was officially announced.

Oh man! A huge relief. It was like…walking around knowing that for like a year since me and Josh Trank, we talked about this when he first got the job. It’s something that we tried to make happen. We knew we had a lot of obstacles in the way and a lot of mountains to move but, you know, for whatever reason things just fell into place and … Fox believed in the situation and believed in me and yeah, we got it done. So that’s definitely something that me and Josh celebrated at the wrap. We were just like we did it.

Jordan then explained he wasn't cast as Johnny Storm a year ago, however it was something he had talked about with Josh Trank.

Not cast, but me and Josh … I was his choice. He wanted me to play the role and I wanted to play the role. So it was something that he told me around his birthday about a year and some change ago, right after “Chronicle.” And it was just like cool…let’s try to make this happen.

Michael B. Jordan was also asked about playing Johnny Storm in THE FANTASTIC FOUR, and the actor said some things will be different in the film compared to the comics and the previous movies, but hopes people will still like Trank's film.

Yeah man it’s been a lot of fun. Johnny Storm is such an iconic character. There’s a lot of personality traits and things to him that people are really going to look forward to seeing. Got a lot of original Johnny stuff in there and then you have – not a NEW take but a fresh take. We have a different take on different things as well. I could go on and on about it but I think it’s something that people will enjoy.

Speaking of the other FANTASTIC FOUR movies, Jordan goes on to say he had a conversation with Chris Evans about playing Johnny Storm.

It is a reboot you know, it’s its own thing. It’s its own origins story. I did get a chance to talk to Chris about it, I met him at this event and he was basically like, “Man I can’t give you anything.” He said, “You’re great, you’re awesome. Just do your thing. And enjoy it. It’s gonna be fun.” That was just a really cool piece of information, words of encouragement from the guy who killed the role. He really did a really great job and hats off to him with how talented he is cause he’s doing an amazing job with “Captain America.” I really enjoy those films as well so that’s kind of pretty much where that was.

Finally when asked about upcoming projects, Michael B. Jordan said CREED will be one of his next movies, and he doesn't want to disappoint fans of the original ROCKY movies with the spin-off.

Yeah I’m not going to let you guys down. I know that there’s a lot of Rocky fans out there and I’m one of them. So from one fan to another I’m gonna make sure we do a good job with this. Sly’s not gonna let anything happen to his baby.

No word on when CREED might hit theaters, but THE FANTASTIC FOUR will open on June 19, 2015.

I don't care about this fantastic four reboot so I skipped through and went straight to the Creed news. I can't wait for this film, just to be able to see Rocky in some form. It will be what Rocky V should have been.

Instead of finding the right actors for the roles, let's just hire our buddies. It's not like there are other actors out there, right?

Right, bc nobody ever hires their friends to work with in Hollywood or makes a group of friends or team (sarcasm).

Expendables
Adam Sandler
Ocean's
Kevin Smith
Seth Rogen/Apatow/Ferrell crew
QT and Sam Jackson (and others)
Leo and Marty
Hell Leo and almost all his directors
Nolan and Caine and a few others

Chris

“Man I can’t give you anything.” He said, “You’re great, you’re awesome. Just do your thing. And enjoy it. It’s gonna be fun.”
If you read between the lines, Chris is trying to politely say "You're good, but the movie is gonna suck, so enjoy the ride". Michael is a good actor, but this pile of horseshit is going to flop.

Get a new agent dude. You have talent and there are better movies you could be doing! As for the movie, I still want something more faithful. Things don't look good in that respect. Still amazes me that with a wealth of stories to draw from, the attitude (by their own admission) seems to be to ignore the comics. I will be happy if I'm wrong.

Yep. That much is definately true. But the origin feel very far removed (how they get their powers / their dynamic). That feels a little too unfaithful for me.

Yes, I absolutely hate this movie and absolutely want it to fail miserably.

Because if it underperforms, the rights will go back to MARVEL who will make a better movie and fit it in the MCU. Exactly like Hulk, Daredevil, Howard the Duck, Ghost Rider, Blade, and Punisher. It might end up being bad, but I seriously doubt it'll fail. In fact, I bet it'd only fail if it was really great, or surreal.

Anyway, was wondering if you would copy and paste your comment to everyone else's comments on every article

Terence Archie, who played Creed in the Rocky musical, was utterly fantastic. I've never seen anyone actually sing a full musical number while doing chin-ups and this guy did that every night.

I loved every minute of it. It is somewhat gimmicky but gosh darn, the set design is mind-blowing. In addition the boxing ring coming out over the front seats, you've got Rocky's apartment, Adrian's apartment, the pet shop, the meat-packing cold storage facility (descending giant sides of beef!) re-created in their entirety. It's too bad the show is closing soon.

I can't recall myself ever hoping a movie would fail, and this film is no different. Why would anyone want a movie to...be...bad? Don't you enjoy movies? I understand being skeptical or worried, but I hope it's a movie I'll enjoy rather than wish it's crap. Bad movies are no benefit to anyone.

Wanting a movie to be bad and wanting a movie to fail are two different things. The new Turtles was bad but it didn't fail and now we're getting a shit sequel to that garbage. This movie is going to be bad so I hope it fails so a better one gets made instead of a sequel to it.

"Use your brain kid?"

Your response is so ridiculous on so many levels. Just bc something goes back to Marvel, doesn't mean it's going to be good, or they are going to even make a film out of it, or add it in the MCU. No news on Marvel making any dark Punisher movie, MCU related or not. Same with all the other titles except Hulk. Your comment is just beyond ignorant. It's exceptionally ignorant, soaked in flashing neon colors asking for everyone to look at you. You did not use one piece

No news on Marvel making any dark Punisher movie, MCU related or not. Same with all the other titles except Hulk. Your comment is just beyond ignorant. It's exceptionally ignorant, soaked in flashing neon colors asking for everyone to look at you. You did not use one piece of logic in your comment, and I'll even agree with you that there's reason to be skeptical of the new film, and that Marvel is averaging above .500.

As I said before, everyone has opinions, but get an educated one. Yours is uneducated. I don't know the budgets, or the box office numbers of the last two fantastic four movies, or the budget of the new film, but in general, 3D action adventure CGI filled movies make profit internationally after all is said and done, so it doesn't matter if you "true fantastic four fans (though I've never even personally met an insane true FF fan)" boycott it, but looking at transformers 4, I'm going to bet most of you will go see it, and on opening weekend at that. It's rare for a film like this to not make a profit at the end of the day, and that's all Fox really cares about (though they seem to be doing better). Like Spidey, fox isn't gonna let this go. Wasn't there talk even of a silver surfer solo film?

So what has been confirmed that has been wrong? I may need to take a step back and make sure you understand the definition of "wrong," and it's not the same as "dislike." The director has shown talent. He caught my attention after Chronicle, made me interested in his follow up. A comic book film directed by him, in theory, sounds better than one from the guy who did 500 days of summer. Ok, cast? Yeah, some seem odd (AND ONE IS A COLORED), but all of them have shown an incredible level of talent in at least one film (I'll give you Mara, she's so so). But I would imagine you only went and saw that Zach Effron and Miles Teller (AND THE COLORED ONE) movie, you didn't see the good films because you probably don't hear about them because you only pay attention to the bigger budget films. I thought Fruitvale Station actually had decent press, and if you saw it, then you saw how crazy talented he is. That actor is crazy talented in Rock n Rolla. No, he doesn't seem like an obvious choice for Dr Doom, and might not work, but he has the ability. They've all shown how special they can be.

So Mara said she didn't read the comics. Which I guess means you believe it when every celeb says I read the comic and love the character? Did you believe that...kid? A significant amount of parts are based on written characters, and a significant amount of actors aren't aware of them. And they made a comment that they are doing a spin on it. Even above he says it's the same character, just fresh. Every comic book movie does that. Every comic book movie changes things from the comics. The only ones that have really stayed true are like 300 and Watchmen.

You may not like these choices, but they aren't wrong. And while I'll even agree that some don't seem like a fit, I think you'd have to be a fool to 100% doubt they can pull it off. Clearly, you have already proven that.

Oh and lastly, I'm a bit behind so it might have changed in like the last 6 months, but have you read a fantastic four comic since Marvel Now? Well, do you know what Marvel Now is? The main 4 aren't even in that comic anymore. There is literally a Katy Perry pop star type who wears an Iron Man like Thing suit of armor. So even the comics aren't following the comics. Because things can change to try to make old stuff interesting, fresh.

Don't just read people's opinions on here and steal them. Go to IMDB, look up those actors. Look through their films. Look at the trailers for them. The reviews on rottentomatoes. To have an educated opinion you have to put a little work into it. Go watch Spectacular Now. Fruitvale Station. Rock N Rolla.

Again, I'll give you that there's reason to be skeptical, but the original poster is right. Also, you are really stupid.

Kebbell was also good in the recent apes movie.

Someone mentioned the TMNT movie - on paper, this cast and crew sounds a LOT better than TMNT did. I think it sounds better even after I saw the first TMNT trailer. The only real hope for this movie IS Trank. Hope that he isn't a hired gun and he has a specific vision he wants to do. I don't think the quality and box office of the FF will be much worse, if at all, than the TMNT movie (I didn't see it).

I think that's slightly unfair regarding the initial comment. You can tell a fair bit from the attitude that is taken towards a project by it's creators. They have hinted that they want to go with a new idea as opposed to what was created in the comics. I feel it is a reasonable reaction for those who loved these characters and stories growing up, and have dreamed of seeing them done faithfully on the big screen to be concerned. Anything I've read about this movie, the stuff about how they won't be taking from the comics, I've interpreted it differently than most obviously. I've understood it as they aren't directly adapting any one story, so what they are telling isn't in the comics. That however doesn't mean that their influence or character base isn't pulling from the comics. Certainly I could br wrong but no one knows enough yet to say. That however doesn't mean that their influence or character base isn't pulling from the comics. Certainly I could br wrong but no one knows enough yet to say. Which is really my main issue with people here, there's far too little, besides casting, known to really make much of an opinion on what we are going to see.

I'm not neither excited or disappointed in F4 because I need to see SOMETHING. I just don't rush to judgment. I've had no problems with the casting so far though. Not with the age or race of the actors. That stuff just typically won't matter to me as long as it makes sense in the world of this film and the essence of the characters are still in tact. It's not like this hasn't happened, successfully too. Bane isn't white in the comics. Neither is Ras Al Ghul. Hell, maybe the TMNT would've been somewhat better if Fichtner would've played Shredder.

I'll have no problems saying this movie looks like it'll be bad once there's more to go on. For now though, I'm a fan of Trank, I'm fan of the casting, especially Jordan and Kebbell.

The rest? Well, I'll let you know once I have any evidence of its quality.

Thanks for your comment Aba. I can't deny you make good points. Especially when you bring up the fact that race change has worked just fine with other characters. I won't deny it, I do have a problem with Jordan in the role. I suppose this comes down to a personal closeness to the character. On a personal level I was never very aware of Bane when I was a kid. I was very close to The Fantastic Four however, especially Thing and The Human Torch. As with many young kids I used to disappear
As with many young kids I used to disappear into my imagination and pretend I was Johnny Storm. Now we all have an inner child within us that gets very excited when we see our favourite heroes brought to life on the big screen. For many of us our connection to them comes through our childhood, and that personal connection we had to that recognisable character. I recall a Joblo member commenting when the casting news had just broken. He wrote that he was black and he could totally understand why some people did not want Jordan. He went on to say that he would not want a white Blade or Luke Cage because they would not feel like the same character to him. I would wager that what he meant was that he would no longer be able to identify with them the way he used to. It's that personal identification that we hold (either consciously or unconsciously) when we react negatively to such a change. On the surface it may sound silly but on the level of our inner child (and who else is present when we watch films about big green monsters and iron men?), it actually runs quite deep.

Moreover, in this case the change does not just affect one character. The dynamics of the family are also instantly changed. As a result the nostalgia for the fans is watered down considerably and they reject it. Its even less recognisable.

Finally, one of the actors said she was told to avoid reading the comic. This was a red flag for me. It seemed like a slip up and although there may have been some back tracking on that comment, it left a nasty taste in my mouth. Even if they were going to use elements from different stories as you say, I feel it would still be a good idea to learn about this character you are going to play? This is a sign that the source material MAY not be respected.

Having said all of this, I cannot argue with your point that we have not seen anything yet and who knows how it might turn out. Of course you are 100% right. Nobody can really know until we see something. We can however, be quietly concerned. Or aggressively so depending on our mood. Lol! ;)

I can certainly understand people questioning the casting. I know I raised an eyebrow with casting decisions like Heath Ledger and Jesse Eisenberg. I can also completely understand where you're coming from in regards to relating to these characters as a child. Now maybe it's because I'm Hispanic but I've never felt it was an issue to relate to my super heroes that weren't exactly the same as me. It's just because I like this young man who is playing Torch.

I'll say it again, as long as it still feels like Johnny, I'm cool. If they turn him into something else just because they cast a black actor then I'll hate this casting.

Maybe I'm just an optimist when it comes to films. Maybe I just don't feel Marvel Studios is the be-all of comic movies so I'm okay with others doing something different. Personally I want alternate takes, not movies that all have the same basic look and tone.

Anyways, I can see some people's views even if I disagree. I definitely don't get trashing and writing off a film no one has seen enough of to really form an opinion of though.

Here's hoping it's awesome.

I agree with Aba and hear your points maniac. When I read the comments they weren't following the comics, whatever was exactly said, I just assumed that meant like the recent TMNT origin, peter's dad/DNA, or web shooters, or quicksikver's dad. Maybe torch and invisible aren't blood related. Maybe they get their powers bc of their scientist parents or bc they are aliens (I admit, that is dumb), but I think it's essentially gonna be the same characters. That's how I've always interpreted it.

And MovieManiac, I like your suggestion to explain what is appealing to us for the movie instead of how others react. And I get that ud rather see FF than Tranks FF. And overall, this prolly isn't even in my top 20 must see right now. But 2sdaychicken, and others are reacting to the movie with no logic. They are just grabbing their pitchforks, and it even feels like it's a mob mentality overall, that even the writers have contributed some. If ppl said I'd rather see FF than Tranks FF, I

If ppl said I'd rather see FF than Tranks FF, I prolly wouldn't respond, but a lot of people are saying that this cast and crew is not only not right for the roles, but not talented. Shame there are not more open debates like this on the site because when everyone calms down to state their views clearly while respecting other opinions it's really pretty interesting. Still a terrible choice to play Johnny Storm, and the movie will be horrible. There has not been one good thing about the film whatsoever. Really hope it utterly bombs like no other.
