UPDATED: Michael Bay apologizes for Armageddon, saying he would "redo the entire third act" if he could

Apr. 23, 2013by:

UPDATE: As expected, Bay has responded to his "apology" for ARMAGEDDON via his website, saying:

I'm proud of Armageddon: One press writer has gone too far in reporting false information. He has printed the bare minimum of my statement which in effect have twisted my words and meaning. I'm not in the slightest going to apologize for the third movie in my movie career, a film called Armageddon. On the red carpet for Pain & Gain some reporters asked me what are you apologizing for, and I said what on earth are you talking about?

What I clearly said to the reporter, is I wish I had more time to edit the film, specifcally the the third act. He asked me in effect what would you change if you could in your movies if you could go back. I said, I wish we had a few more weeks in the edit room on Armageddon. And still today Armageddon, is still one of the most shown movies on cable TV. And yes, I'm proud of the movie. Enough said.

What do you think? Journo misquote or back peddling?

Original story:

Yesterday, Michael Bay's ARMAGEDDON was on TV and I ended up leaving it on for a bit, just to see if I could be convinced that it had aged well over time. As expected, it had not. I remember being through the roof excited for ARMAGEDDON in the summer of 1998, as I'd grown to be a big fan of Michael Bay after BAD BOYS and THE ROCK. Plus, throwing in Bruce Willis as the lead made it all the sweeter. Until I saw the movie (which I mustered two viewings back-to-back) and realized it was bloated nonsense that was cut like an editor with ADHD and a crack habbit. There is hardly a scene that stands still or lets you appreciate a single moment, even if it still jerks a tear or two at the end.

In an interview with The Miami Herald, Bay admits to both the hyperkinetic editing that defines his films and offers a straight up apology for how ARMAGEDDON turned out:

“It’s really funny, people have always given me a hard time on my editing. But if you could do a graph on my movies, you would see how my editing has slowed down over the years. Bad Boys was my first movie, and we cut that quite fast. Back then it was very new for action. Now you see a lot of that imitated. Call it what you will. Yes, critics have given me s--t about it. But when you watch the Bourne Identity movies, they are cut way faster."

And, as for that apology:

“I will apologize for Armageddon, because we had to do the whole movie in 16 weeks. It was a massive undertaking. That was not fair to the movie. I would redo the entire third act if I could. But the studio literally took the movie away from us. It was terrible. My visual effects supervisor had a nervous breakdown, so I had to be in charge of that. I called James Cameron and asked ‘What do you do when you’re doing all the effects yourself?’ But the movie did fine"

For the record, I'm not a Bay-hater at all. If you take out the TRANSFORMERS sequels and maybe PEARL HARBOR, I think he has some great, fun, and stylish flicks to his credit. With PAIN AND GAIN coming out, of which I've heard mixed reviews, it feels like the director may be attempting to find a niche that allows both the bloated popcorn flicks and the bloated "indie" flicks to exist peacefully on the same resume. Hopefully, Bay will someday return to the straight action film genre, where I feel he excels best. PAIN AND GAIN looks like a step in the right direction.

PAIN AND GAIN opens this Friday, April 26, 2013, followed by TRANSFORMERS 4 next year on June 27, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: The commentary track on Armageddon is pure magic. Ben Affleck talking about how he tried to make sense of the plot to Michael Bay only to be told to "Shut the f*ck up" is behind-the-scenes gold. Give it a listen someday. It's well worth it.

Thumbs down on the apology, bro!

ARMAGEDDON was one of the first films I ever reviewed on this site, back in July 1998, and it was actually one of the reasons I started writing as "JoBlo" (your average Joe), because every other fuckin' "film critic" out there was bashing the shit out of the film, while I thought it was a "...a nacho-munching, popcorn-eating cheese-fest of special effects, fun and 144 minutes of brainless entertainment." I don't know if it holds up, as I haven't seen it in years, but I don't respect folks who

Here's that review of mine: [link]

Unlike the authors opinion. I feel the movie has aged fine. Some of the effects are old school but it definitely doesnt pull you out.

There are many movies Bay should apologize for. Pearl Harbor comes to mind. Armageddon is not one I can think of. That was an entertaining movie.

If he wants to apologize, it should start with the fact that he overcompensates for his shitty movies by filling in lesser roles with Coen Brothers actors. Buscemi, McDormand, Malkovich, Peter Stormare...takes all these incredibly unique and wonderful actors and sticks them in awful one-note rodeo clown roles. And he apparently conspired with Adam Sandler to completely ruin John Turturro's movie cred.

I just pray Michael Stuhlbarg knows to stay away from that paycheck, that guy's got

So much to apologize for, and he chooses Armageddon....

This man hurts my hair, he probably did this to "win back" the fans he pissed off with all the other atrocities he has given us.
Just please go retire, then apologize for not doing it sooner.

The retard can't even apologize sincerely.

"But when you watch the Bourne Identity movies, they are cut way faster."
Wow, so now you're comparing your shitty movies to bourne movies? Newsflash Mr. Bay: All Bourne movies had a story / script / screenplay, look up these words and try to learn what they mean.

THE MOVIE DELIVERS

I don't know why he needs to apologise for this movie? It's entertaining and far better than most action films put together. It's supposed to be flashy, funny and action packed. It may have a few flaws when you're watching it 'now' but it's a dam fine action film. Back in the 90's we had action heroes and not Super Heroes that feel guilty about being Superheroes !!!!! TF movies are visually stunning . I can't imagine any other director being that technically close to that level of commitment

I re watched the TF cartoons recently and they are quite laughable now but still it holds a special place in my heart as I used to watch it as a kid. trying to bring out outdated ideas will kill a series like that. Look what they did with 21 jump street and Green Hornet. Made them into comedies without sticking to source material and updating the audience. The A Team came the closest to sticking to the characters we have seen loved on TV but it seriously let down by a joke of villain.
Also when did this site become the nit pickers of action/blockbuster type movies? The whole point of coming to this site is to see the awesomeness of the pop corn flicks.

The problem with Armageddon

goes beyond the editing. Astronauts undergo a lot of training but the movie made it seem like if you put a space suit on an oil rig worker then you have an astronaut. Then there's the problem that even if you destroy the asteroid you haven't eliminated the danger: you end up with meteorites hitting the Earth and if they hit a populated area then they can still do a lot of damage. In fact, they said that the asteroid was "the size of Texas" which is way bigger than the asteroid needed to be

Then there's the problem that even if you destroy the asteroid you haven't eliminated the danger: you end up with meteorites hitting the Earth and if they hit a populated area then they can still do a lot of damage. In fact, they said that the asteroid was "the size of Texas" which is way bigger than the asteroid needed to be to wipe out all life on Earth: placing a nuclear weapon under the surface of the asteroid is not going to do much (800 feet down would only be 1/5000th of the way in) so there was no way it was going to split in half!. Besides, with an asteroid that size, moving at 22,000 miles per hour, the asteroid would have been seen with the naked eye 60 days before it hit Earth and yet they said it was only 18 days away, at which point it would have already been the brightest object in the sky. By comparison, Deep Impact, which came out the same year, was much more accurate: they destroyed the comet but the debris still hit the Earth and did a lot of damage, just not enough damage to wipe out all life on Earth.

No need to apologize. Armageddon was a triumph of schlock. It was what it was. Affleck and Buscemi and Willis they all delivered, and the Aerosmith tune was memorable. The third act seemed to race by and that was actually a blessing. The second Transformers movie stands out as complete garbage. Armageddon is WAY down the list of Michael Bay films that need an apology. It was a disaster flick that was tongue in cheek silly, its attempts to take itself seriously made it comedic, making it

Not a Bay hater either & I am not defending him either though, but the thing you can say about his style is it's always consistant. Love them or hate them the Transformers franchise is what they are, how far can you take a movie about giant robots really? About Armageddon, it definitely has not aged well over the years & one of his dumber movies. Bay has made some great movies though like the Bad Boys movies, The Rock & the very underrated The Island. Pain & Gain seems to have him return to

On the update

I completely buy into that. Bay's never ben one to shy away from his own success, never mind quality. And his specific wording, and the way he reiterated it, makes a lot more sense than taking his comment on editing and translating that to mean he regrets the whole thing. How many directors talk about what they wish they'd done in the editing room? A lot.

It's the first movie I ever saw in the theatre, and thus occupies a special place in my heart. It's utterly goofy, really dumb in parts, but I'll be darned if it isn't a great big entertaining blockbustery film. And co-written by JJ Abrams, that's gotta count for something. Also, "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" is one of those guilty pleasure favourite songs.

Apology accepted

I always kinda has a soft spot for Armageddon. It was by no means a good movie, but it was a fun one. I enjoyed it when i first saw it as a kid and while i may not be able to stomach an entire viewing nowadays, i could watch a few scenes catching it on tv. Its a lot like "GI JOE: Rise of Cobra", it was a fun movie.

Now just apologize for Pearl Harbor, that movie is hands down the worst thing that director ever made. It was a shameless ride on the coattails of The Titanic. There is no excuse

What a coincidence!

It's on TV right now here in Taiwan! I just saw the guys all singing "Leaving on a Jet Plane" together and then they dock with a Russian Space Station which then explodes for no apparent reason and then Ben Afleck and the crazy Russian astronaut walk away from a space shuttle crash.

I'm sorry but this movie is garbage!

EDIT: So Bruce Willis is now sacrificing himself to save the world and Ben Afleck is crying and now Bruce Willis is stopping to talk to his daughter and now she's crying.

Love Armageddon and it definitely still holds up

I disagree with Bay but at the same time I think it's dumb that people are bitching at Bay for saying something honest about his movie. He's just expressing his own opinion, like we are when we say we love it. He's looking back and thinking about what he would've done differently and I don't see what is wrong with that at all. I didn't think there was anything wrong with the third act but if he did, whatever! That's cool, doesn't change how much I like it. Let the man speak his mind on his own

I don't know

Love him or hate him, Bay doesn't seem like the type to apologize for something that he has made. I've never met the guy but judging from interviews and comments made by him he seems to be pretty pleased with all of his work and defends it pretty fiercely. Honestly, I wish I had his confidence when it comes to that regard.

I've never met the guy but judging from interviews and comments made by him he seems to be pretty pleased with all of his work and defends it pretty fiercely. Honestly, I wish I had his confidence when it comes to that regard.

Maybe Bay is too far removed to see the absolute movie genius of the unique scene with animal crackers and Liv Tyler's belly button. WTF? I was scratching my head and thinking this is an approach so schlocky and original I have never seen anything remotely close to that in any film.

Apologizing for Armageddon is a good start.

Now let's hear it for The Island and all those Transformers movies. Your karma will thank you.

Too many Michael Bay articles on this site recently

Out of all his movies, strange he picked this, but I agree great filmmaker or no, he makes entertaining movies for the most part.

Weird. I hate most Michael Bay movies, even the ones a lot of people LIKE, but I think Armageddon is actually pretty entertaining. A little too long for a film as dumb as it is, but entertaining nonetheless.

Surprised by this. Armageddon is one of the ultimate Summer blockbusters that I can think of that truly is the definition of a fun popcorn flick. It's one of my more favorite Michael Bay films.

I love this film. It has one of my favorite Bruce Willis performances in it. And I thought the ending when he tells Gracie goodbye was awesome.

Ben affleck dies. He was a fuckin tool in that movie LOL. Or just redo it with them failing and the world ends. Much better. I still like bay. But I have to admit that transformers is kind of dumb I still enjoy it for the action thats about it.

Wow. I've never seen a collection of "film fans" defend Armageddon before. It is one of the dumbest movies I've ever seen. Completely absurd. As many of the people involved later said, the film makes no goddamn sense. Doesn't even try. I'm not a Bay hater. I think he has a cool visual style, but he puts no effort at all into the stories of his films. At this point I'm not sure he is capable of it and Armageddon is probably his worst in this regard (maybe TF2 was worse). He is a director of

I'm hoping Pain and Gain proves me wrong about his inability as a storyteller.

True it was a dumb film, but it was entertaining as hell. You don't go to see a Bay film for a smart film. If you are doing that, then YOU are being dumb. You have to defend Armageddon as a film fan because it manages to stand out among the genre as particularly different. There were a number of asteroid disaster films out that year like Deep Impact. Armageddon at least decided to go full retard.

But aiming for stupidity doesn't seem like a valid excuse to me. The Scary Movie franchise, for one example, is willfully stupid, and the internet film community eats those alive. But it is OK to be either purposefully stupid, or (and more likely) to just not give a shit that the film is stupid because there are enough FX and explosions that story and character doesn't matter?

I don't buy it. It is like the defenders see it as OK that it is stupid because it cost 150+ million dollars. If

He should already be apologizing for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. What a train wreck that movie will be.

Why? He's not writing or directing it. So why should he apologize for a movie that a) isn't even made yet and b) he's simply producing. It seems to me like he's getting an unfair amount of hate over this movie considering his role in the project.
