Michael Bay on Transformers 4: "We've redesigned everything"

Feb. 4, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

t4

This news falls into three different categorizes depending on who you are: good, bad, or meh. I'm firmly in the "meh" group. I'm not a huge fan of the series but I'm also not one that rips on Michael Bay for everything he touches. The first BAD BOYS I enjoy and I actually don't think THE ISLAND is a complete train wreck.

Forbes has a new interview with the director and when asked about TRANSFORMERS 4 he dropped a couple of hints of what to expect from the new trilogy.

On how TRANSFORMERS 4 will be different from its predecessors: "We’re going to start off smaller. There’s a brand new cast. To freshen the franchise we’ve redesigned everything from top to bottom. The history of the first three movies is still there, we start four years later and there’s a reason why we’re meeting a new cast."

When asked if this was a reboot Michael Bay goes on to say, "No, that’s wrong. We keep the Transformers the way they were, it’s just four years later. There’s a reason the Transformers are redesigned. We’re trying to broaden the franchise and give it more places to go."

A lot of this smells like they're trying to boost toy sales, but I can't be completely cynical right? Actually, yes I can. While I think TRANSFORMERS 4 will still make a ton of money a lot of the cash earned isn't coming from the fans who grew up with the cartoon series or original toys. It's from people that are fans of the movie and everything else that may have come before the films isn't as important to them. They may have known of the show and had a couple of Optimus Prime action figures, but they weren't necessarily FANS of Transformers. I hope that the reasons for the "redesign" in the film is something that is used to advance the storyline and not just a marketing ploy.

Filming is tentatively schedule for April of this year.

Extra Tidbit: I wish I could remember where I saw the quote so I could give the person credit, but someone called PAIN AND GAIN "Michael Bay's version of an indie film." That's really all you need to know about Michael Bay films.

Visual Vomit

I hope that they have cleaned up the design language in the fourth film, the whole Visual Vomit that accounts for the design principles of the first three films only contributed to the chaos that was happening on screen. And please dear God can we have at least one static shot of action so as to help the viewer understand in a clear way whom is kicking whoms ass!

I only hope that Bay would cut out annoying human characters. What I expect from Transformers movie is transforming-robots smashing each other in an epic battle.

I'm giving this a thumbs down cuz I know TF4 will suck anyway.

"WE'VE REDESIGNED EVERYTHING".....So he's making it to where you can actually see who's throwing the punches in a fight now?

Hm, seems to me like that is the closest to the original show Bay has come so far.

First I think its interesting that Bay was done after TF3 and said he wanted to do other things, then SHAZAM! "giant bag o cash drops from the sky" okay lets do this, redesign everything dump the original cast, its not a reboot, we just need new freshness and more toy tie ins.

I thought the first 3 had their moments and hell for me most of those were Sam moments. I saw all the previous 3 in theaters but not going to be happening for the rest. I will catch them free later.

Listen, I'm no Michael Bay apologist, and there's plenty to dislike in the Transformers movies, but let's not get too high and mighty about the original cartoons.

Were they fun? Of course. Were they classics? Absolutely. Were they ever anything besides a giant toy commercial? No. First Gen Transformers ain't Hamlet.

There's a difference in the cartoon and movies though. The cartoons were made for kids only, but the movies weren't.

I'll be honest, I have NO IDEA why people find it so hard to see what bot is throwing what punches at whoever they are fighting. I had no trouble dicerning which bot was which. That aside, as a fan of the series, yes a fan, I am looking forward to what's gonna happen next. Just hope a lot of the fat ROTF and DOTM had will be trimmed. And the series also needs less "adult humour", just stick to regular humour. No more farting robots, no more robots with dicks, no more dog humping. It needs to be
