Michael Douglas talks Ant-Man production, SDCC and Edgar Wright's departure

07.10.2014

While this probably doesn't come as a huge surprise, in an interview with Collider Michael Douglas revealed he will be going to this year's San Diego Comic Con to promote ANT-MAN. No word on if any of the other actors from Marvel's upcoming film will be appearing at the event as well, but there's a good chance Michael Douglas won't be the only ANT-MAN star going to SDCC.

I have some good news for those of you who were worried the recent hiring of two additional writers for ANT-MAN might affect the film's production. Michael Douglas also says he's going to start shooting his scenes for the Marvel movie in August in Atlanta.

Michael Douglas previously shared his thoughts on director Edgar Wright leaving ANT-MAN, and again says he's very disappointed he left the project.

Yeah, he’s a wonderful talent. It was very disappointing, yeah. It was a big disappointment and more so for him because he had a lot of years invested and he was really the one initially who got them to even consider it, you know, the screenplay that he wrote. I’m not the producer on it and I’m an actor for hire, and, you know, Marvel certainly has a pretty amazing track record, rightly or wrongly, so I think it just was that kind of combination where although they like the idea of the individual and somebody with Edgar’s individual spirit and everything, maybe just collided with an operation – I think they’re all on relatively decent terms.

It really is a shame Edgar Wright won't be directing ANT-MAN considering all the time he has spent developing the film. I'm still not sold on Peyton Reed behind the camera for the Marvel film, however I'm not completely against it either. I do wonder if Reed ends up appearing at SDCC with Michael Douglas just how many Edgar Wright related questions he will have to answer, and how fans at the event will respond to the director.

Marvel's ANT-MAN is scheduled to open on July 17, 2015.

You know if a movie studio like Marvel has not earned enough trust among the millions of people that have continually watched their movies and enjoyed them then there is no hope for anyone. I'm disappointed Wright is not doing the movie as he's made a string of movies I've enjoyed watching but at the same time...he's yet to deliver a box office smash. A box office smash doesn't mean a movie's actually well received by the masses but it does indicate, especially in Wright's case...a brand of stuff that caters to a selective audience. Perhaps that's what was going on with the direction he was taking the movie in. I don't know...but it's feasible. Marvel has a track recorded of delivering commercially successful movies that are received very well by the masses….they’re not scared to try something new (the Iron Man 3 twist for example) and have a brilliant track record of recasting roles (why not directors?). Surely they've earned an element of good faith by now…rather than the hysteria I see in the some of the comments ever since the news broke? Incidentally, on that Iron Man 3 twist…it turned out to be Marvel’s first real mistake as it certainly seemed to be something that bothered a lot of people. Perhaps Marvel have taken caution to future directors trying something ‘out there’ again. Wright’s a director that would try something like that…so that could be a reason for the parting of the ways. I'm still going to watch this movie the first weekend out...and I'm sure I'm not going to be in the minority.

I'm still cautiously optimistic

Michael Douglas well deserves his legendary status (case in point: playing Liberace in BEHIND THE CANDELABRA) and the rest of the cast is great as well. I just hope the new director doesn't mess things up.

It won't be anything new, just like all of Marvels origin movies.

Looking forward to Doctor Strange much more then this film. Wright was the only BIG reason I was really excited for this film. Now that he's gone, my excitemt has now dropped significantly.

Somehow I sense there will be more troubles for Ant-Man production to come. Possibly more rewrites and reshoots.

I don't think it's such a hot idea to let Peyton Reed address the crowd at Comic-Con. The negative response he will probably receive could be really disheartening.
