Michael Fassbender would be open to playing Robocop

11.14.2011

The name that has been thrown out the most for the lead role in the ROBOCOP reboot is Chris Pine. The only thing is that Pine has yet to say anything on it. At least not that I've read anyway.

He also seems to be a favorite of reboot helmer Josť Padilha. Another name the director threw out during Fantastic Fest was Michael Fassbender. Then followed that suggestion up by saying, "He's a great actor but there are other great actors that I really love, that could also do it. I can give you other names if you like, like Chris Pine; there's several of them. But I haven't discussed this film with any actors."

So what are Fassbender's thoughts on all this? The actor had this to say, "It could be kind of fun. It could be kind of good to have a helmet that I could hide behind, for most of the film, too. That sounds kind of appealing." The actor has yet to see the script but would offer it a fair chance just like any other project that comes his way, "I'll take a look at the script and sit down with the director and have a conversation. It's not definitely like, "Oh, I've got to play RoboCop before I retire." I don't have that about anything. I don't go, 'I have to play the Dane one day, or Hamlet.' I don't really think like that. I just wait and see what comes up, and I'm always open to it. If I react to the script, then I'm up for anything."

Would you welcome this remake more with Fassbender?

He's a better choice than Chris Pine. I'm probably in the minority here but I don't have a problem at all with a reboot of Robocop. The original is a good flick but its popularity is more so of the fact that it originally got a rated X back in the day. By today's standards I see more gore in a PG 13 movie. When people talk great movies that should never be remade, I dont see Robocop in that category.

Now if only they could just leave Robocop alone.

He'd be perfect.

If this HAS TO HAPPEN, for whatever reason we need a new one...there's one guy that could make me interested in the role it'd be Fassbender.

Pine's ah-ight. I just don't think he's that strong a lead without an awesome supporting cast. Fassbender, on the other hand, is always exciting to watch. I hope they radically redesign Robocop. No more bulky hips and stiff motion.

Agreed. Pine is great in Star Trek and in Unstoppable but he had awesome star power with him.

I work for Dick Jones

I think he'd be great as Robocop. But as a general rule, I think most actors should avoid taking more than one big 'franchise' role at any given time. Performances get muddled, and inevitably leads to over exposure. '80s Harrison Ford was the last guy to ever pull it off with Han & Indy.

What about Stallone for Rocky and Rambo? Or are they not big enough franchises?

Nah, that's just your nostalgia for the '80s talking. Plenty of actors have juggled multiple franchise characters since Harrison Ford. Hell, just within the past few years Downey Jr. has done it with Holmes and Iron Man, and as someone else mentioned, even Ian McKellen did it with Gandalf and the same character that Fassbender played last year.

I'm surprised that no one photoshopped Robocop's helmet onto Fassbender's head for this article, hehe. He was so good as Magneto. I'm pretty sure he'll be a good and believable Alex J. Murphy.

If it has to be remade then yes, Fassbender would make for a good Murphy.
