Michael Shannon rocks it as Elvis in this first image from Elvis & Nixon

02.05.2015

Kevin Spacey is killing it in the political arena as far as Netflix's House of Cards goes, but it looks like he's sticking around to deliver some comedy as President Nixon in ELVIS & NIXON. The plot is pretty absurd and wildly enough, based on a true story. On December 21, 1970 Elvis went to the White House to meet Nixon in hopes that he would be sworn in as a federal agent against the war on drugs and communism. Why? Well, because when you're an insanely famous star, I guess you feel you're entitled to these things! Michael Shannon will be portraying Elvis and now we've got our first look at the two leads in character.

Here's the first image, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter:

The plot intrigues me, the actors intrigue me and the fact that this is Cary Elwes' (THE PRINCESS BRIDE) only writing credit intrigues me. It's really kind of a bizarre story that seems like it would only happen in real life, and I'm curious if a feature film with this premise can entertain for its entire running time (yes, I'm familiar with the TV flick ELVIS MEETS NIXON). This film also stars Colin Hanks, Johnny Knoxville, Evan Peters and Alex Pettyfer, so at the very least we have a well-rounded cast to carry out this madness.

ELVIS & NIXON will hit theaters sometime in 2015.

How can this movie be funnier than the first one they did on this same subject? Well, ONLY if they include a scene of Ben Stein, then an 18 year old university student visiting for a lunch at the WH cafeteria with his dad who worked f or Nixon, "Hey Ben, look, theres Elvis Prasley in that table". "No way, dad, it cant be". "Yes, go check him out" So Stein walks up to the table, and tells the extremely surprised Elvis. "Hey, I Ioved you all my life". Priceless.

I'm actually impressed with Michael Shannon's side-profile as Elvis. He's got the squarest jaw in Hollywood, so that makes him an inspired choice (looks-wise) to play the more angular King. Even if he wasn't killing it on House of Cards, Kevin Spacey might be the best actor in the modern era to play the infamous prez. Nobody looks like Richard Nixon anymore, but Spacey has a long history of turning scumbags into semi-likable people(and great at impressions, so maybe we'll get a little of the

Michael Shannon is a more unlikely Elvis than every Elvis impersonator ever.

This has the potential to be one hell of a screwball comedy

Elvis Presley apparently wanted to be sworn in as a federal agent so his bags wouldn't be searched at airports (he was addicted to prescription narcotics) while Nixon was trying to figure out ways to appeal to the youth vote (keep in mind this was 1974; Elvis' appeal was to middle-aged housewives at this point). Elvis was reportedly high as a kite during the visit, and Nixon had no idea how to talk to the guy.

The concept has major potential. Let's hope the execution is as good.

This was in 1970, not 1974, and theres a diference as Elvis was not high as a kite, but rather with a huge allergic facial infection, which he caught on the way from Washington to Los Angeles, before returning to Washington this time with Jerry Schilling who is, incidentally, co-producer of this movie. Nixon, ypui{re tight, had no idea how to talk to the guy, because all he knew about him was that he was the guy whose movies his daughter would ask him to take her to see in the early

Nixon, ypui{re tight, had no idea how to talk to the guy, because all he knew about him was that he was the guy whose movies his daughter would ask him to take her to see in the early 60s, but as far as knowing what he should have known, after all, he was the President of the US, he could have asked him about his Army years. altough someone as anti Elvis as Donald Rumsfeld once was (before meeting him two years later) was so surprised and impressed that Presley wouod want to talk about the Army. that to this day, he's a super Elvis fan.

It'll be fun to see these two bounce off one another; especially with who they're playing.
