Living up to the title, Mickey Rourke will be absent from THE EXPENDABLES 2, the explosive extravaganza currently shooting with CON AIR director Simon West.

According to Deadline, Rourke's rubbery mug will be otherwise occupied making the dark crime comedy SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS with Colin Farrell and his IN BRUGES writer-director Martin McDonagh. They also say that Rourke "did the first film as a favor to director Sylvester Stallone, but it doesn’t sound like there was a big financial incentive to return for a reprise on the surprise hit." (Or perhaps just not a big enough paycheck to justify spending some chilly months in Bulgaria rather than LA.)

Then again, it's quite possible that Rourke's EXPENDABLES 2 role wouldn't have been very big even if he did want to do it -- the initial synopsis released by the production company revealed his character's death: "The Expendables are back and this time it's personal! After Tool (Mickey Rourke), the heart and soul of the Expendables, is brutally murdered on a mission, his comrades swear to avenge him. They're not the only ones who want blood. Tool’s beautiful young and wild daughter Fiona embarks on her own revenge mission, complicating matters when she is captured and ransomed by a ruthless dictator plotting to destroy a resistance movement. Now Barney and the Expendables must risk everything to save her and humanity."

Still, there are plenty of other macho dudes assembling on screen for the sequel -- Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Terry Crews, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Liam Hemsworth, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Scott Adkins, and possibly even Nic Cage and John Travolta.

The carnage begins on August 17, 2012.

Rourke was never a big action star to begin with, so this is fine with me. Now if they can only get rid of Terry Crews and replace him with Michael Biehn I'd be set!

Well....
one (if not several) of the Expendables better still die in this one. Think of the original predator. Ultimate team of badasses fail one by one to insurmountable odds. The fact that everyone made it out unscathed (Even dolph came back to the team after going psycho) ruined the movie for me.

Good for him. Rourke didn't really mesh with the rest of the bunch, a little too method-esque for his own good. Plus, his '90s crap aside, the man wasn't an action star.

Wait a minute!
Rourke made a lot of crappy movies in the last ten years, with a few exceptions (WRESTLER, SIN CITY and EXPENDABLES). And he had time to make 13, PASSION PLAYS, KILLSHOT but not for EXP2! You're not cool anymore Mikey!

Sly helped him
The article indicates that Rourke did The Expendables as a favor to Stallone. Well, Rourke has a career to re-launch. So, Sly more helped him than the other way around, IMO.

"Rourke's rubbery mug"
I don't think he's got enough skin left on his face for it to qualify as "rubbery".
I'm all for Rourke's mutilated visage and one-note performance appearing in fewer movies. The man's a caricature of his former self.

hmmm.
Get Mel to replace him....sure the character will only be in it for what maybe 5 10 minutes but it would be cool to see him in anything where he doesn't wear a frigging beaver puppet on his hand.

Good, couldn't stand watching him cry again. Look, I like Mickey, but the guy was probably one of the worst parts of the original film. Them getting Mickey to add that extra bit of drama was a terrible idea, something they should have learned from The Wrestler (Love the film, but watching Mickey be sappy and attempt to cry is painful). That and there's such a huge cast of badasses, I don't...

That and there's such a huge cast of badasses, I don't think we'll be missing out on much, considering he was only a small part of the first film.

As far as Chuck Norris goes, isn't he retired and selling bibles now? It'll be nice to see him kicking ass again, but idk, kinda weird.

yea it stinks, but I would have been more upset if Arnold, Wilis, Norris, Van Damme, or any of the other original guys weren't in it!

Dangit!
I miss him already. Oh well, at least I'll see him in Immortals in a few weeks. Go Mickey!
