Microsoft announces a live action Halo television series produced by Steven Spielberg

May. 21, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Alongside Microsoft's annoucement of the Xbox One came another big piece of news that no one saw coming. Microsoft is developing a live action HALO television series that will be produced by Steven Spielberg! After a decade of planning and development on a feature film along with some pretty awesome commercials and web series, HALO is finally getting the "premium" treatment.

But, there is one catch. The only way you will be able to watch the HALO series will be if you own an Xbox. The Xbox One is being touted as an all-in-one system with some really cool new features, but this HALO news is unexpected. Spielberg's involvement likely means they are going big budget. Even Spielberg produced series like FALLING SKIES have modest budgets but pull off impressive special effects. By having Microsoft control their own HALO production, they don't need to worry about altering to meet any studio expectations. Plus, this will drive up interest in Xbox Live if no one else will carry the show.

It remains to be seen if any big name actors will join the project. HALO could end up being a bust or it could make Xbox the next Netflix. The new series has no expected release date, but let the chatter commence!

Stoked about this!

It would be cool if Blonkamp(sp?) did direct an episode or two, bringing his involvement with the franchise full circle, so to speak. Same with Peter Jackson, once he'sdone with The Hobbit. Honestly, I'm glad they're doing a series instead of pushing for a movie. Take the time to develop the story, then create a blockbuster. And no, Halo isn't required to have the Chief in screen every second for it to be good. Forward Unto Dawn was amazing. Top notch everything, it was engrossing and had a

If all you want is the Chief, go masturbate to the life size bust you surely have in your room. Don't shit on someone's hard work because it doesn't include your favorite character.

This could be good, all depends on how they shoot it, I think I speak for all halo fans when I say it HAS to follow the Master Chief, he must be the main character, if he's not then I'm not wasting my time

I'm not a fan of Halo at all, but I just read that the new show will have the highest budget in TV history. The strong rumor is that the Halo show will cost 17 - 20 million dollars per episode. Game of Thrones costs between 6 and 9 million per episode, and that show's production value is amazing. I may watch the Halo show just for the production value alone.

I heard that about the budget too. 20 million dollars for one tv show episode is a lot. I'm gonna give the Halo show a shot now too just because of the budget.

This has potential

After the success of Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, I'm optimistic about the upcoming Halo TV series. Let's just hope it doesn't turn out like Terra Nova and more like Falling Skies.

1) This will not inspire me to buy an XBox One, I will wait for the pirated episodes to show up on youtube and/or one of the many TV Streaming websites out in the world.
2) There is no way they can keep the pace and excitement going from episode to episode to make it anyone's worth while.
3) Guaranteed the show does not follow Master Chief, but rather it will follow a squad of soldiers who have frequent run ins with Master Chief.

Epic Fail Microsoft

I'm on the Fence About This

The other day I watched Halo: Forward Unto Dawn on Netflix and it was ass. Pure Ass! The worst part is that they used Master Chief in it and he sucked. Now, some of the commercials for Halo: ODST and Reach were really well made and compelling to a certain extent. But, they did not feature the Master Chief. Also, the Neill Blomkamp produced pre-vis materials (for the failed film he wanted to make based on the game) were good. But, the officially licensed Halo web-series (complied into the movie

But, the officially licensed Halo web-series (complied into the movie playing on Netflix) was crap and that is why I am on the fence about this announcement. That being said, Spielberg is the silver lining to this news and, hopefully, he is involved more so than some of his other TV projects.

All hype, no payoff and cancelled within 5 episodes.

Not interested

This already looks terrible... more like a crappy extended HALO commercial than an actual show. I guess we will have to see more before we can truly judge what its going to be though.

What are you basing this on? The above video is a commercial for Halo Reach, not the television series that Steven Spielberg and Microsoft are producing. So, this video IS a crappy extended HALO commercial. There is no footage of the series yet, since it is in early stages.
