Millar's Superman epic

10.29.2008

Mark Millar spoke recently with Empire, telling them about his pitch for an 8 hour epic 'GODFATHER'esque trilogy of SUPERMAN movies. He calls the project the Magnum Opus of Supes stories, and says he has a 'big Hollywood action director' with him. Here's what he plans:

"Its gonna be like Michael Corleone in the Godfather films, the entire story from beginning to end, you see where he starts, how he becomes who he becomes, and where that takes him. The Dark Knight showed you can take a comic book property and make a serious film, and I think the studios are ready to listen to bigger ideas now.

I want to start on Krypton, a thousand years ago, and end with Superman alone on Planet Earth, the last being left on the planet, as the yellow sun turns red and starts to supernova, and he loses his powers."

I used to spend seven hours a day working in a comic book shop and I still didn't read Superman because I thought he was too bland, so on the one hand I'm probably not the guy to be casting judgment on a subject like this. On the other hand I do have a desire to act professionally and add some insightful or thought provoking commentary, just the same. I guess we'll find out in the next paragraph which side of me won out:

Boobies.

Extra Tidbit: Bryan Singer wanted Jude Law to play General Zod.

First off, anyone suprised at that ending doesn't know Superman. OF COURSE he would be the last being on Earth. He's Superman. This has been talked to DEATH in the comics. Nothing new.

The ending sounds awesome to me. People who get this idea that Superman is some happy fucking alien who's all rainbows and sunshine need to do some research. Bruce wayne's parents were killed when he was little. Superman's WHOLE FUCKIN HOME PLANET was destroyed. Batman is a hero to his own Race. Superman HAS

Bruce wayne's parents were killed when he was little. Superman's WHOLE FUCKIN HOME PLANET was destroyed. Batman is a hero to his own Race. Superman HAS NO CHOICE but to save individuals who are a completely different race than him! He's the last one of his kind. (if you go with that story, no zod or Kara, etc).

Jesus, Why do people think he's some happy ass motherfucker? OF COURSE, a visually dark movie would not fit, but an EMOTIONALLY dark story DOES fit.

I don't want some capeless, non flying asswipe like Burton's "vision". But I also don't want some plastic, always smiling Man of Steel either. The man has issues. It's about damn time someone explored them.

This sounds great to me, but not the "starting 1000 years in the past". Start with the origin we all know and love. And end it with the ending he talked about, With Superman being the last survivor on Earth with no powers. It MAKES SENSE.

And sorry, but a reboot is about the only shot DC has to getting anywhere CLOSE to catching up with Marvel's excellent vision.

All I know is that if I can get an AWESOME Batman trilogy (just one more 'good' film to go) and then also get me AWESOME Supes and Green Lantern trilogies then I will be happy with DC. Follow up with standalone features for Flash, Green Arrow, Wonder Women, and Martian Manhunter in steady development, scrap that awful idea for Justice Leage, get a NEW justic league in thr works using all the people they've introduced. Sound like a lot of work and time?? YEAH. They are getting their ASSES kicked by Marvel. I higly doubt what I want will ever happen, but I can dream. Give Miller the job, DC. You'll be one step closer...

1--SUPERMAN RETURNS was good.
2--It was nice of Mr. Millar to give away the ending to his own movie(s).

Wow, this sounds exactly like the Superman film I truly DON'T want to see. Terrible idea.

That idea is way too dark and intense for Superman. He says his inspiration is the Nolan Bat flicks, but Batman is essentially the polar opposite of Superman, so nothing Batman-related should inspire Superman-related.

Three things just made this the most infuriating story I've read all day (nothing to do with James Thoo's writing)

1) Use of the phrase 'magnum opus' - It's pretentious as shit and anybody who claims to be working on one needs to be taken outside and beaten with a wrench.

2) Trilogy. "It's the first chapter in a planned trilogy." I am fucking sick of hearing that phrase for every new goddamn fucking movie that comes out. Yes, trilogies are great, but at least get the first movie out

Yes, trilogies are great, but at least get the first movie out before you start making plans for trilogies, Christ. Besides, what have we learned about third movies? We've learned that if Terminator, Spider Man, X-Men and yes, The Godfather, can fuck them up, pretty much anybody can.

3) Where does this motherfucker get off comparing his PITCH to The Godfather?

Eh - I could go either way, depending on what they plan to do with Superman in middle of the story. That's what fans really care about, not 1000 yrs before/after him.

Somebody needs to make a movie based on the Death of Superman with Doomsday in it.

ROFL

I've never been a fan of his work, but Mark Millar used to have some really interesting, progressive ideas. Now? I think his ego has been blown to hell because Hollywood is currently touching his butt. Dude needs a serious ego check, because this little plan of his is the most asinine thing I've read all year.

Sure he just gave away the ending to this 8-hour epic, but this will get people wondering what events lead up to him being alone waiting for the sun to explode.

Millar Blows Dogs!!!

I think that Millar has been hanging out with Uwe Boll. This is a typical Boll no win ending for Superman. Fuck Millar and his depressing Superman Trilogy. Sounds like the Matrix shit all over again.

For the love of...

...all that's good and merciful.

I like Superman. I'm not a fan, but Superman Returns was, I figured, as good as it gets. And I really liked it.

Now we have to have a whole new Star Wars (not Godfather) Trilogy. That's what this is. Because look at how little happened in those three prequels and they raced through most things.

Thousands of years are involved here and exactly as the clever guy said. Now we know what happens. Blah.
I'm not interested.

Unless it's a sequel to Superman Returns I just really don't want another superman story. Why do they always go for prequels? So boring? You already know what happens. Give me something fresh.

It bothers me so much that this Time machine rip off is going to get made.

WB make Millar a deal

The ending is what sold me. It starts with Krypton than ends with Superman being alone.

could this reference to "a big hollywood director " be about Donner. its been speculated that he's helming a new MAJOR project after his LA TIMES interview speaking at length on SUPERMAN, a few weeks back when LW5 was shot down. How fucking awesome would it be to see the man who invented the genre return the big blue guy back on the screen.

and people thought returns was bad...

How can they even make this a movie? I love Superman, don't get me wrong, but seriously this pitch is impossible.

We start on Krypton 1000 years ago, before supes was born, then fast forward 1000 years even more than that to the supernova of our sun? Where is the story, the characters, the lois lane love interest, the daily planet, everything?
