Miramax gets into the TV business with new series based on James Mangold's Cop Land

Aug. 2, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Looks like Miramax is about to dip its big toe in the TV market, teaming up with Starz and developing a one-hour drama based on director James Mangold's thriller COP LAND, which starred Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, Robert Patrick, Peter Berg, Janeane Garofalo, Michael Rapaport, Noah Emmerich, and Annabella Sciorra. The film was a modest hit, but apparently that's still enough to push into a series. Mangold, fresh off THE WOLVERINE, is executive producing with Kathy Conrad, as well as co-writing the pilot.

The show is expected to be a "takeoff on the feature films plot of a suburban New Jerseysheriffwho slowly discovers the town is a front for mob connections and corruption."

According to Deadline there will be many such partnerships coming up with Miramax, as the studio is looking to expand its various properties into TV shows with their source stating, There will be some big announcements in the next 60 days of productions and joint ventures. Hmm. Interesting, but one has to wonder just what properties they'll be teaming up for. A while back there was talk of all sorts of shows from Miramax being developed, including the Matt Damon pic ROUNDERS, Kevin Smith's CLERKS (which "kinda" happened with the animated series), and Jon Favreau's SWINGERS. I think the ship has mostly sailed on those.

What Miramax films would you like to see developed into a series?

Extra Tidbit: Is it only a matter of time before Tarantino dives into TV? Pulp Fiction as an anthology TV show maybe?

Stallone's best performance outside of Rocky/First Blood, an utter shame his career was executed because of it.

A great film that I re-visit quite often. I remember when I first saw it as a teenager and being really impressed with Stallone (at that point I hadn't seen the original Rocky so I had no idea he could "act.")

A drama about cops? On TV? Whoa, what a clever idea.

Copland is a definite must-see film for those who still havent. Arguably Stallones best work and everyone other actor in this brought their A-game. Deniro, Keitel, Liotta and hell even Robert Patrick bring it big time in this.

I wish Stallone would act in more roles like this every now and again. Who the hell needs another Rocky or Rambo?
I remember seeing Copland and being really enthralled by his subtle performance.

Tidbit

I don't think Tarantino would dip back into the Pulp Fiction world, at least not directly, but he has talked about possibly making mini-series after he departs the movie world.

I suspect "joint ventures" is code for product placement

This is one of Sly's most underrated films and is really a great movie if you give it a chance. If done correctly it could be a really good TV series and re-introduce people to the story line. If you haven't seen Cop Land just because you assume it's shit or hate Sly, you are way wrong and really missing out on a good film.
