Missed it the first time around? Transformers 3 returning to IMAX theaters

Aug. 23, 2011by: Mike Sampson

TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON badly wants to be the biggest movie of 2011 but stands frustratingly behind HARRY POTTER by about $20 million. But Paramount has a last minute push to try and get TF3 to the top spot: a two-week re-release in IMAX theaters.

The "3D IMAX Experience" of DARK OF THE MOON returns to theaters this Friday and will run until September 8th. I was not a huge fan of DARK OF THE MOON but if you're going to have your senses violated by Michael Bay, it might as well be in the most grand fashion available.

The film will return to 246 theaters, all of which include a healthy up-charge for both 3D and IMAX presentations. (At my local theater, there is a $6 ticket increase for 3D IMAX on top of the $11 ticket price.) So Paramount clearly knows what they're doing here and is re-releasing the film in the most expensive format possible to maximize receipts over the next two weeks.

Your move Warner Bros. Perhaps there's some "additional footage" you can add to a DEATHLY HALLOWS re-release to keep your lead over TRANSFORMERS down the home stretch. Of course, in our office pool, I picked TRANSFORMERS 3 would win the summer box-office so now I'm conflicted. Go buy lots of tickets!

If I went back to see this movie, it would be like Rihanna retuning to Chris Brown.

In December, have Christopher Nolan put together another 10 Minute IMAX Opening Sequence Teaser for TDKR. Don't put it in front of another movie, sell it standalone. That'll help make up for this year, and then the actual movie will obviously take care of 2012's IMAX profits.

Imax had a crappy year for movies and are trying to make it up somewhere. their stock is down almost 50% since July 1st.

Why would anyone want to see this again? I desperately wanted to leave the movie theater. I was so bored and the movie would never end. Like the guy below me said, consider yourself LUCKY

I actually can't believe I'm admitting this, but I regretted seeing it once.

All for it...

Thumb me down all you want, but I have nothing against this idea. For anyone who hates this, don't go. Simple as that. If the studios keep throwing these re-release parties and people don't come, they'll stop. But for someone like me who appreciates 3-D (in the rare instances when done correctly) I'm all for it. Let's be honest, TF3 was a sequel... about alien robots.... based on an 80's toy... directed by Michael Bay. Of course it was mind numbingly dumb with paper thin logic, paper thin

Of course it was mind numbingly dumb with paper thin logic, paper thin acting and exposition so blatant that it was nearly painful. And you know what, I'm ok with that. When I'm in the mood to be tested by a film I'll watch Nolan's early work or a Kubrick film. But let me say this; TF3 in IMAX 3D was less a movie and more a 2 and a half hour theme park ride. The entire Chicago sequence was breathtaking. They seemed to have solved the brightness issues with the 3D and the new medium actually served to make Bay a better film maker by forcing him to dial back the breakneck transitions of his action set piece edits. I have a 2 year old, so nights at the theater are a luxury for me. It's rare to be wowed by a film, and this film wowed me. Sure it didn't wallop me emotionally like 'Platoon" or move me like "Shawshank" but I'll tell you what it did do. It made me spend nearly $20.00 for a film and not regret that decision, which in today's day and age is a rarity. I'm looking forward to a second chance to see this. And if you're not, that's cool too. If you're made they're doing this... don't go. That's a vote against this sort if thing.

I'm seeing this for the fourth time today to cap off my summer. The movie definately looks better in IMAX 3D. I might take a friend to it when it's re released.
