MMA fighter Georges St-Pierre cast as villain Batroc The Leaper in Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Mar. 25, 2013by:

According to Latino Review, another villain has been added to CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, this time coming in the form of Batroc The Leaper.  MMA fighter Georges St-Pierre will apparently portray the French mercenary who is a master of savate (a French form of kickboxing) and has been in Cap's rogue gallery for quite a while.  Batroc has made the rounds throughout the Marvel universe, fighting the likes of Spider-Man, The Punisher, Deadpool, etc., but it looks like his cinematic debut will be with Cap.

If you're a non-comic reader, then it's likely you've never heard of Batroc The Leaper, but for those who are familiar, this should be an interesting development.  I think some folks may feel like the Cap sequel is getting "top heavy" on the bad guys, but really we only know of three for sure, and that's Crossbones (Frank Grillo), Arnim Zola (Toby Jones), and now St-Pierre as Batroc, with only two of those likely to be actual physical combatants. The film has already been labeled a "political thriller" that will be told on a large scale, which perfectly suits the source material by Ed Brubaker.

With the recent announcement that Robert Redford may be joining the cast, playing a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent named Pierce, and the already assembled cast of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Anthony Mackie as The Falcon, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Sebastian Stan as Bucky/The Winter Soldier, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Frank Grillo as Crossbones, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, and now St-Pierre as Batroc, this is easily sliding into home plate for my most-anticipated of 2014.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo,  is slated for release on April 4, 2014.

i will probably get thumbed down a lot,

but lets get past the guys MMA status, id rather see someone who can act instead of someone who can fight... Id much rather see these marvel films have some depth. I love watching GSP fight (being canadian and all), but i do not like watching the mans interviews, and his commercials are horrible. I cant image him on the big screen for 2 hours.

At first, I was like "WTF? Oh great another wrestler/mma fighter in a movie role" But after reading the character's description, the only person to come to mind is George St. Pierre. I don't know how his acting will be but at least he wont have a fake French accent. His physical ability/look already fits.

Second Best Villain...

Probably Baron Helmut Zemo. After that it could be "Baron Blood" the vampire. Captain America #253 and 254 by Roger Stern and John Byrne are amazing stories and would work great in a modern movie adaptation.
Viper would also have been a great Cap villain (she has battled him numerous times in the past).

Although, not the greatest Cap villain in my opinion, but still a great story arc... When Captain America gets replaced by one of his enemies as Captain America; Super-Patriot (later known as U.S.A.gent) was a lame character overall, but the Cap stories of the '80's, and this one in particular were always a favorite. As far as a second best villain, I would say Baron Zemo.

Redford's role

Someone has perhaps mentioned this fact already. However, Alexander Pierce was a regular recurring character in the comic Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD. Perhaps, Redford plays a character based on him, although there would be an age difference.
BTW, Otis Driftwood is absolutely correct. The Baron Blood storyline would be a strong entry into the franchise. One can dream that Marvel does the Baron Blood for the third Cap movie. Some First Avenger characters would have to re-appear.

With the current resurge in Vampire flicks, this would be awesome and also give the folks at Marvel to show off (in flashback of course) Union Jack, Spitfire and may be other Invaders. Namor could actually be shown in a flashback setting him up for his upcoming movie.

Alot of potential here.

Yeah, as soon I read the bit about Redford's character being named Pierce I instantly thought about Alexander Pierce. I would bet money that is who he is playing. He's probably best known for his role in a 1980's storyline where HYDRA infiltrates SHIELD and Nick Fury has to go all renegade as a result. Its a little known storyline, but a solid one and would fit perfectly with the "70's political thriller" vibe that they've said the film will have.

Re: Redford's character, my money's on him pulling a Ra's Al Ghul (originally Ducard). He's the real mastermind, some well-known CA villain (I'm not all that familiar with them..), pulling the strings of these "physical" types. Makes sense in my mind, with announcements like these implying that the secondary villains are actually the main baddies. If this is gonna be in any way "political," there's gonna be corruption and deceit.

So yeah, I'm all-in for Redford being the man behind the

No big deal.

I'm certain this part will have virtually no lines. Just muscle for one of the main villains; like Sabertooth in X1. This dude will definitely bring the physicality. One of the best MMA fighters ever.

its a minor roll i can imagine so its a good call on the casting, and that keeps jcvd from being cast as anything in avengers 2 so its a win win

I had no idea who St. Pierre was before hearing about this casting. I don't love the choice but since he's a UFC guy I assume his character will just be a "muscle"/henchmen for the main villain. So I guess I'm cool with it.

Cast real French people !

Yeah, he will have the accent from Quebec. And as a French viewer, it's like hearing the US southern accent for a character who is from Maine. Did you see the SNL skit "Maine Justice" ? Well, it's the same as trying to sell us a person from Quebec as a French guy.

I agree with Gcolonna

I'd rather see an actor in the role who could give the character depth than having a wrestler play the character just for proper fighting reasons.

Anyway, out of all of the upcoming Phase 2 films, this one is the most that I am looking forward to.

Depth? We´re talking about Batroc here. A C-list comic book character and henchman. I´m pretty sure there is no academy award required to play this role.
