Mon Ami! X-Men producer says Gambit movie with Channing Tatum could happen

Jan. 30, 2014by:

The Cajun mutant known as Gambit has always been a fan favorite and one of the most desired to see on the big screen. His first appearance came in the form of Taylor Kitsch in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, which just wasn't enough to appease the rabid fanbase (like most of the movie). We heard star Channing Tatum toss his name into the mix last year while promoting WHITE HOUSE DOWN and now he's actually got X-MEN producer Lauren Shuler Donner fighting in his corner, saying:

"I'm dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum. That doesn't have to be a great big movie. It's a thief in New Orleans, it's a whole different story. He's on board, and I have to get the studio on board. How can anyone resist Channing? He's such a sweetheart."

Tatum, who owns a night club in New Orleans called "Saints and Sinners" and frequents the region, grew up in the bayou's of Mississippi and seems to feel that he's got the pulse of the region, which would in turn help his portrayal of Gambit. Unfortunately, I can already feel the sting of fan rage that will no doubt follow this news, which has seemingly gone from pipe dream to near reality. Personally, I'm not against it, but I'm not sold either. However, getting movies like this greenlit usually requires a name star to carry the film and with Tatum attached and Shuler Donner backing him it's chances of happening are greatly improved.

The next mutant flick, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, hits theaters on May 23, 2014.

Taylor Kitsch.

Taylor Kitsch is a fine Gambit. Keep him , plus he's a better actor than Channing , even though Channing has improved a lot lately.

I'd be willing to bet

there's already a script, a first draft, that was commissioned way back when Taylor Kitsch was Gambit in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie. When Battleship and John Carter both bombed the studio didn't want to go through with a Gambit movie. But Channing Tatum is a genuine star after 21 Jump Street and Magic Mike and if 22 Jump Street is a hit then having Channing Tatum attached is the sure way to get this greenlit.

Anyway, the movie would follow X-Men Origins: Wolverine in the timeline, I guess, although they could get a third actor to play a young Gambit and then jump ahead to the 80s. I wonder how this will fit in with future X-Men movies.

We saw Professor X walking in stills from First Class. I'd like to see an after credit scene in X-Men: Apocalypse in which Xavier and Magneto recruit Jean Grey shot the same way they shot the opening scene to X-Men: The Last Stand. That would complete the First Class / Days / Apocalypse trilogy.

I can understand why Donner would be thinking about solo stories. I think Jackman might have one more Wolverine in him. I don't see them doing a whole series of Gambit movies though. Don't forget that Days is effectively a reboot of the franchise. So they could have Gambit join the X-Men and have Gambit, Storm, Cyclops, Jean, Iceman, Kitty, Pyro and Colossus battling Mr. Sinister, with new actors taking on the roles of Storm, Cyclops, Jean, Iceman, Kitty and Pyro. A third movie could bring back Stryker except now he's in Genosha and the stakes are bigger because the country is using his mind control techniques to enslave hundreds if not thousands of mutants.

What about the X-Force movie? It might be a completely separate franchise set in the present day. Maybe we can see Sunspot, Warpath, Blink and/or Bishop in the X-Force movie because they'll be cast for Days and then you won't see them again. Liefeld said Cable and Deadpool would be in the X-Force movie. Ryan Reynolds still wants to play Deadpool in a movie. If the movie comes out in 2016 we should hear some casting news soon. Or is it being pushed back to 2007 to make room for X-Men: Apocalypse?

Here's how to do it:

First, for the characterization... I can actually see Tatum doing this. Gambit isn't an energetic powerhouse, he's laconic and laid back, the epitome of Cajun cool. He is 100 percent charm. Tatum isn't the most expressive actor, so that all works to his advantage. Gambit says more with a wink, and a grin than most people do with whole sentences. To get his mind around the character, Tatum should dig up a copy of The Big Easy and study Dennis Quaid because A: That is an awesome film that

To get his mind around the character, Tatum should dig up a copy of The Big Easy and study Dennis Quaid because A: That is an awesome film that perfectly spins the web of New Orleans sexy appeal and B: Quaid is just so cool in that film, totally seducing a young Ellen Barkin with every smile and utterance of "Chere"
Next, for the look...look at how a guy like Eastwood, Fincher or Mann shoots, totally saturating every shot with local flavor. Louisiana, and New Orleans itself has it's own character (see AHS: Coven) and needs to be treated as such as much as any other role in the film. For Remy himself...we all know they won't go with a costume, so long, dark hair, red on black eyes and constant stubble are a must, as is a long coat and staff.
Last, for the story...There should be no X-Men in this. Throw in something at the end if you want, with storm coming to recruit him (a nice ode to his comic introduction) but the story should be about the thieves and assassins guilds, his doomed Romeo/Juliette romance with Belladonna and the long history they share. Gambit has a great backstory and it should be used. Hell, throw Brother Voodoo in there if need be, but keep the mutants relegated to the guild members.
So, that's just my two cents

I'm from New Orleans (still here), and I hear the Cut Off / Venice Louisiana accent (Gambit accent) quite often, and it's going to be hard for Tatum to get that right. I think a Gambit movie could be cool, especially if they film it here, but I'm not sure Tatum is the man for the job.

Josh Holloway

Marvel tried asking him TWICE & he had to turn it down both times. He's just the coolest choice, IMO.

As long as he gets the accent right

Taylor Kitsch's non-attempts curdled my stomach in WOLVERINE.

As for Channing Tatum, I'm willing to give him a shot. Since he's from the area, that's a good thing. As for his acting, who knows? Remember the fan rage over Heath Ledger as The Joker?

Why in the name of Apocalypse would they make a stand alone Gambit movie ?
There are plenty of other mutants who deserve their own franchise. Where's the Magneto film ?

The Magneto movie got combined with First Class. I think that is pretty evident in FC as it's more Magneto's story than anyone else.

And Gambit is a badass that deserves justice. He doesn't need his own movie but they better not cast Channing.

the guy in Star Trek who has an accent. If he got buff, I feel like he could. I always imagine gambit with a French accent rather than a hill billy.

Wow, can't believe there's still so much hate for the guy! After Magic Mike and 21 Jump Street, he's really grown on me. Not saying he'd necessarily make the best Gambit, but I'd certainly see it.

Only know Gambit from the 90's cartoon. Can Tatum pull off a sweet accent? I don't even know who you can put in this role. Depp if he was younger? Hmm, I just saw the new Hunger Games. What about that hot young stud that totally stole the movie?

they never learn

Look plain and simple dude cant act and he looks partially retarded, Im not saying that but my wife and her friends say that after that Magic Mike movie that he just looks slow and he for sure talks slow and he is as wooden as any actor I have ever seen when it comes to drama (he make Keanu look outgoing). However on the comedy side he is pretty good, but I WILL NEVER see a X-Men movie or another serious action movies (looking at you Jupiter Ascending) with him in it.

then when 22 Jump Street comes out, the tide will turn again. watch.
He doesn't have to be in everything though. No one really needs this movie.

I think he would actually make for a good Gambit. He has definitely grown as an actor in the last few years and with the right talent surrounding him, I think this could be a good fit and film.

He's not my number one choice (that would be Josh Holloway), but he would be a suitable choice and if this is what it would take to get the character back on the big screen, I would say go for it.

could be good

Channing could fit this role but only if he gets the hair right.
I like the idea of a smaller movie that doesn't have to have the big spectacle as the first Wolverine movie.
And how about a suit that matches the comics, huh? Just once in the x-men universe!

Don't hate the guy and he's been great in comedic roles, but he strikes me as too boring and lunkheaded to be Gambit. Someone more mercurial, more unpredictable probably would work better, someone like a younger Jared Leto.
