Mondo unveils the first of their Lord of the Rings posters

07.05.2012

So I said that the new IMAX poster for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES made tingly. Well, this Mondo poster for RETURN OF THE KING makes me drool. Just looking at it makes me want to buy it, frame it, put it on the wall, and stare at it for hours while listening to Rush.

I've never wanted a poster so badly in my life. Here's the thing though, it will only be available at tonight's screening of Mondo's Mystery Movie in Austin, Texas. So if you see this article after attending and you have the poster in hand, know that you have cut me to the core. Why must I live in Texas but be punished with living too far from Austin? For those of you unfamiliar with Mondo's Mystery Movie, here's the rundown: you buy a ticket with no prior knowledge of what the film will be. When the night comes, you find out and receive a poster for the film.

The details are below along with part of the press release. The black and white variant is awesome as well, but I'd rather have the color print.

Good and bad

Poster looks amazing other than the lettering not being all that legible, but the issue is as someone else mentioned that it would seem the imagery used is a poor choice to encompass and represent the final book of the saga. I actually thought of The Hobbit more at first glance thinking dragon. But yea the eagles vs the winged Nazgul beats not a good symbolic choice even if it looks fantastic. Curious to see what the others will be.

I'm amazed these are getting negative comments. This is some seriously beautiful illustration work. Wish movie studios had the balls to use posters like these.

"TORN ICING"?

What the hell are the words at the bottom of the poster? It seems a bit stupid to let the script get SO fancy it can't be read.

This poster has little to do with Return of the King.

Am I thinking of the same Mondo as everyone else? The Faces of Death, Goodbye Uncle Tom, Brutes and Savages, The Killing of America etc. Mondo? If it's the same company, they sure have come a long way. Oh and the posters don't look too good.
