Monster Slayer caught

01.25.2008
This year's Sundance festival hasn't exactly been aflame with big sales, but the smaller Slamdance seems to be full of genre treasures.

Anchor Bay has grabbed up the low-budget horror flick JACK BROOKS: MONSTER SLAYER, and will apparently give it at least a minimal theatrical release (likely similar to last year's mayhem-loaded slasher HATCHET). The movie looks like a blast -- it's about a plumber (Trevor Matthews) with a beast-battling legacy, who finds himself fighting genre veteran Robert Englund, flailing tentacles, and various monsters in old-school latex makeup.

Learn more about the movie, check out the trailer and maybe get a groovy GUYVER vibe RIGHT HERE.
Extra Tidbit: Co-star Rachel Skartsen played young superheroine Black Canary on the short-lived BATMAN sorta-spinoff series BIRDS OF PREY.

Wow. Those who are calling this a Buffy rip off need to seriously watch the trailer before spouting off about stuff they know absolutely nothing about. The trailer shows a movie that is NOTHING like Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The only thing even close to Buffy is the title, nothing more. And this is coming from a huge Whedon fanatic.

"Unassuming character is reluctantly called to fight forces of darkness when it's revealed he/she has legacy/mythology of being a slayer (hero, leader, etc)."

Pretty much repeated though history in numerous myths and legends. Whedon wasn't doing anything by using that hook .

Thanks for mentioning Rachel, I'm a big fan of hers. Looking at the trailer, it's nothing like Buffy, but I still think they could have gone without the eye catching Slayer part.

Ahhh

Fair dos, I didn't bother to watch the trailer. It's not the sort of film that'll get a UK release anyway I should think :)

But I watched the trailer, which looks nothing like Buffy in the least. I understand how you could come to the conclusion this is sort of a Buffy rip-off, but the difference between what's on the page and what's on the screen is what I'm noticing.

Er, Hoyle...

The title is a direct copy: 'Name of character' + 'Name of creature they fight' + word 'slayer'. The plot is a direct copy (well, from that synopsis anyway): Unassuming character is reluctantly called to fight forces of darkness when it's revealed he/she has legacy/mythology of being a slayer.

Can you see it now?

Buffy? Really??

I think it looks more like Evil Dead than Buffy, in that [link] way. That doesn't mean it's good, just means I don't see Joss Whedon rip-off here.

CLONE!

Another Buffy/Night Stalker clone. Nothing fresh or even remotely appealing!

At what point does Buffy show up and kick everyone's ass for ripping Joss Whedon off?
