Monsters director Gareth Edwards directs a monster named Godzilla

01.04.2011

If you appreciated Gareth Edwards' low-budget MONSTERS but wished for more of the titular phenomenon, the filmmaker is glad to oblige.

Edwards will tell GODZILLA how to smash cities in the latest variation of Toho's irradiated lizard-beast. A fitting choice, Edwards will obviously have a substantially bigger sandbox to play with the famous monster and the creatures he battles -- the movie comes from production company Legendary Pictures (INCEPTION, THE DARK KNIGHT) and Warner Bros.

Edwards will direct the project and develop the script with a yet-to-be-hired screenwriter (previous drafts have reportedly been discarded).

You may recall that Guillermo del Toro was (erroneously) rumored to be involved with this new GODZILLA. You may also still be trying to forget Roland Emmerich's GODZILLA.

Monsters was awesome. So happy studios are giving the "little guys" a chance to helm big projects.

But I must sheepishly admit that I have an undying love for Emmerich's Godzilla. It was fun. I live in shame.

I'm so glad WB/Legendary decided to go with one of the new blood indie directors that still have the passion to make a good movie over the hacks that just are in it to make a buck (McG,Michael Bay, ect). Godzilla is by far my favorite film franchise and I am delighted it is in the hands of a very talented director. I can't wait!

Monsters was alright...

Monsters was a decent flick for such a low budget, but nothing spectacular. What I find funny is all the people saying they are waiting for it to come from Netflix...I saw this movie for free on cable before it went to theaters....Even DVR'd it for my wife

I haven't seen Monsters yet (but it's saved at the top of my Netflix queue) but I have heard lots of good buzz and I have high hopes for this pairing.

I have been a fan of the big G since I was a kid and the less we talk about the Emmerich film the better.

As for Final Wars...meh. Didn't hate it, but wasn't as taken with it as some here. Personally, I preferred Shunsuke Kaneko's Godzilla...and his Gamera trilogy (especially the third film) rivals any Godzilla movie made since the original.

judging from the positive feedback I've heard about Monsters (still waiting for it on netflix) I'm pretty excited about this. The effects are there to do this really well.

Just as long as he looks like Godzilla and not some giant iguana...I'm in!

Loved Final Wars too, in all it's cheesy glory.

good choice, Monsters was pretty good. I would have liked to see someone like Neill Blomkamp get their hands on this.

Also, Final Wars was completely crazy and awesome, i loved it.

Uwe Boll could make a better Godzilla film than Roland Emmerich

"Monsters" is a fantastic little roadmovie with some monsters in it, director Gareth Edward cares about characters and drama which is a good thing. But will he pull off a big project like Godzilla? I have faith

I haven't even seen 'Monsters' yet but already know this will be 800 times better than that abomination from 1998. Now add in Rodan and that Blue Oyster Cult song!!! LOL . . .

Anything Godzilla is Good!

I might be one of a small amount of people (I do know they're some) who love love Gozilla 98, but I'm proud and not ashamed!
I am super pumped Legendary is behind this, sure to be....(I just have to) legendary

Excellent choice! "Monsters" was great. I think he'll do a great job restoring dignity to Godzilla.

Haven't seen Monsters

But the response to it suggests he gets kaiju and there's no bigger kaiju than Godzilla. I actually figured after his big breakthrough Edwards would opt for a different direction but who can resist Godzilla!

This is a redo that I am hoping for to really kick ass. I would love to have a great Godzilla movie, with alot of action and for Godzilla to be scary as hell.

This being my first ever post here, i find it fitting that it concerns the Big G! I'm hopeful that it will be a kickbutt rendition....anything would surpass the '98 train wreck. Actually, if they would have called that anything BUT Godzilla it would've sucked a little less...maybe. Here's to hoping for the next one!
