by: Paul Tassi Dec. 2, 2009

Well, it's been almost 48 hours since we've written anything new about AVATAR, so there's got to be some of you out there jonesing for your fix. Annnd also some of you that probably never want to hear about this movie again, so you might as well just go read about BOOB right now.

But for those of you ailing, I've got the medicine right here in the form of a handful of new pics from the film. Check a few of them out below, and click to head over to our AVATAR movie page to see larger versions of all of them.

yeah, i am going to have to agree with ccapel on this one. the fact that people have problems with is that we already KNOW none of the backgrounds are real (unless you know of some floating islands no one is aware of). we KNOW that the aliens are not real. and the fact that it contrasts heavily with things we normally see, it is very hard to immerse yourself in the visuals in just still shots...

I can kind of appreciate where the film-makers are coming from with the visual style to this - the lanky blue aliens, the floating rocks, the giant lizards - it's basically 1970s science fiction art come to life - Rodney Matthews type stuff. Even if in that respect it turns out to be a vanity project that doesn't have the mass appeal they think it will, I'm still interested to see the finished...

Even if in that respect it turns out to be a vanity project that doesn't have the mass appeal they think it will, I'm still interested to see the finished movie. The plot as we know it thus far does seem clichéd, but if nothing else that's in-keeping with the retro sci-fi art vibe. You do see a lot of 1970s fantasy artist influence in cinema (i think Philippe Druillet's comics had an influence on the background design of the Star Wars prequels, personally) and I at least appreciate the visual spirit of Avatar. I'll definitely go see it.

NEW PICS???
Argh!! This drives me nuts, every time a web site says "New Pics" for any given movie, they are always pics that are NOTHING new. Every time this happens with "new" pics, these pics are BORING!!! I can grab some stills from the trailer and say they are "new" pics. Hey "new" pics of Freddy Kruger are up...oh wait they look just like the ones we've seen a million time. Lame lame lame.

I'm too lazy to figure out what this argument below me is about, so I'll just say that this Avatar film is finally starting to pique my interest. Even if the plot seems rather bland. We shall see.

It is fact that gollum looks and acts more realistic than Jar Jar Binks. It's fact that the compositing in 2012 looks better than the compositing in Independence Day. Some guy can come along and say, "NU-UH!" but the vast majority is going hear that and assume he's either got some kind of chip on his shoulder regarding the subject matter, or he's just plain stupid.

If there were no giant blue aliens in those jungle shots, and it was just the camera pointing at the backgrounds, there's not a doubt in my mind that you and anyone else would not be able to tell that it was CG. They couldn't possibly look any more real.

Have you seen the 4 minute clip where Jake jumps into the waterfall? That water could not possibly look any more real. The layman is going to assume that the only digital thing in the frame is the alien. This is an incredible achievement that you, for some inane reason, seem determined to ignore.

At 1:40 in the very first teaser for the movie there's a closeup of Ney'tiri that just absolutely cannot look any more real. Even if this were the only shot in the film that was this good, it's still easily the most convincing, realistic CG character ever created. Hands down.

It's not a matter of opinion when you can go back and grab footage of every other digital character ever made and compare them side by side. Although if you have to do that to be convinced, you may need to get your eyes checked.

I hope there are no more floating head/floating rocks with waterfalls posters coming soon b/c that's killing my buzz.

I'm not rushing out to see this opening night but I'll be there opening day.

I asked him if he was retarded. It's an honest question.

And it seems we're just on completely different sides of the fence with this one. The best effects in Jurassic Park were the animatronics? I think the opposite is true. It was always glaringly obvious when it was an animatronic. The movement was terrible and totally destroyed the illusion.

But I...

But I digress.

When we're talking about the most realistic CG characters ever created there isn't much room for opinion. Up until now it would be Gollum or King Kong, but Avatar pushes the envelope further than ever before. The vast majority of industry artists will agree with that statement and anyone with a pair of eyeballs that is capable of getting past the fact that "They look like space smurfs! LOL!" will as well.

You do realize that every shot in the jungle is all computer generated, right? For you to compare that to the crappy matte paintings and horrible CG backgrounds in Phantom Menace renders your opinion practically useless.

kdraines - Of course it's CG. When was the last time you went outside and waved hello to your ten-foot-tall, blue alien neighbor? It seems fake because something like that just doesn't exist.

What you're ignoring is the FACT that this movie not only contains the most realistic computer-generated effects ever created, but that the AMOUNT of those effects is also unparalleled.

Cameron promised a seamless experience, and you can't deny that many of the shots we've seen from this flick couldn't possibly look more real. Not all of them, of course. But a lot.

Also, Cameron has been touting the CG character's performances more than anything else. And in that regard, he is absolutely delivering what he promised. Jake and Ney'tiri's expressions and acting are practically exact replica's of Sam and Zooey's. This is a fact.

emjoi - Are you blind? And mildly retarded?

It still just looks....
... like video game cutscenes to me. I'm sure I'll see it, and I will probably even quite enjoy it, but I'm not amazed yet.

So excited. Got tickets for a preview showing at my local IMAX on the Wednesday :)

Sometimes it's not too bad living on the UK, almost makes up for 'UP' being released 6 months later than in he UK.

I just ordered some IMAX tickets for Avatar 2 days ago as well. I've been waiting years for this movie, and I'm as excited as most of you guys. I just have a hard time thinking this movie will even cross 300 million domestically.

I just don't see it having the same appeal to a wide audience that Titanic did. The "older" generation is sick of CGI, the younger generation doesn't...

I just don't see it having the same appeal to a wide audience that Titanic did. The "older" generation is sick of CGI, the younger generation doesn't know who James Cameron is and the love story hasn't been sold to the women moviegoers.

I hope it does well but I really can't see it topping more then 350 million in the US and that's being generous.
