More casting rumors for True Detective season 2, plus possible plot details

08.05.2014

Yesterday we learned Vince Vaughn might be in talks to join season 2 of HBO's True Detective, and now The Wrap is reporting Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss is being considered for the female lead. The Killing star Michelle Forbes is also apparently being eyed for a key role as well.

The site also has a few possible plot and character details for the second season of True Detective. Although these aren't confirmed details, if true they could be spoilers, so some of you may want to avoid the rest of this article.

First, here is the premise for the next season of True Detective, according to The Wrap.

It will follow the death of Ben Caspar, the corrupt city manager of a fictional California city who's found brutally murdered amid a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that would forever change freeway gridlock in the state. Three law enforcement officers from different cities and branches of the government are tasked with finding out who did it. They soon discover their investigation has much broader and darker implications than they initially thought. Caspar's 52-year-old corpse is found on a lonely stretch of Pacific Coast Highway near Big Sur — satanic symbols etched on his chest. It turns out he had a penchant for rough sex and may have been involved in the occult.

The site says Vince Vaughn is in talks to play Frank Semyon, "a former thug-turned-businessman who's working with a local mayor and his political cohorts to spearhead the construction of a high-speed railway system that links Southern California to Northern California in order to reap financial gains from federal grants and land purchases."

The Wrap goes on to say Colin Farrell is close to signing a deal to play Ray Velcoro, "who has been damaged by years of turmoil in both his personal and professional lives," and Taylor Kitsch may play Paul Woodrugh, "a handsome, 28-year-old military veteran who has seen his own share of violence and destruction."

As for the roles Elisabeth Moss and Michelle Forbes might be up for, the site says Moss may play Ani Bezzerides, "a tough, no-nonsense Monterey sheriff whose troubled upbringing has driven her to gambling and alcohol" and it's possible Forbes could play "either Farrell's ex-wife (a survivor of sexual assault) or Vaughn's charming but mercurial wife."

Obviously we'll have to wait and see if any of the plot and casting rumors pan out, but what are your thoughts on these potential plans for the second season of True Detective?

1. Wake me up when we have official news.

2. Hmmm... Occult again? Maybe this is just another puzzle piece to a larger jig saw as the seasons progress. Maybe it's all intertwined and by the series finale we'll see how it's all part of a larger conspiracy and all the seasons are somehow connected.

3. Kitsch is in this? I really hope he can redeem his career with this. I'm really pulling and rooting for the kid. Maybe he's just not meant for the big screen.

I am a little let down by this cast, outside of Vaughn and Farrell.
I am also let down that we're going back to the Cult thing... unless it ties to the first season.

Ehh...how rumor-y is that synopsis exactly? Are they "this is effectively the official synopsis" super-confident? Or are they "we got this info from a random PA" grain-of-salt confident?

Uh. Satanic again? Lone body again? True Detectives season 1 is so frustrating. So much incredible stuff, but the story completely fell apart. Made no sense

Vaughn, Kitsch, and Farrell could be great on this series. Not too sure about Moss, her character on Mad Men is kind of annoying, but I think that's more from the show's writing than her performance. Michelle Forbes could be great as a supporting character. If her character as Vaughn's wife is meant to take on a very meaty and integral part than I don't think she's up to task. She's really the only wild card on this list so far.

For some reason, without Cary Fukunaga directing, I just don't have high hopes for this season. Vaughn could be a really good addition, but time will tell....
