More concept art to remind us how bad Superman Lives would have been

Jan. 4, 2012by: Mike Sampson

SUPERMAN LIVES never happened and I think we can all be thankful for that. Just the very thought of Nicolas Cage as Superman is enough to give pause and now some more concept art from the failed production has leaked online proving this was one adaptation we're happy never came to fruition.

This sketch represents what Superman would look like at the beginning of the film before his death at the hands of Doomsday. This represented their version of the "classic" Superman costume. Notice the Nic Cage receding hairline.

This is another sketch for Superman's costume from the beginning of the film. This sketch actually went as far as the sculpting stage and a number of models were built on this design. Don't ask why his abs are silver, I have no idea.

In the script, Lex Luthor blocks out the sun to drain Superman of his powers. After his death at the hands of Doomsday, Superman is resurrected by a Kryptonian robot named The Eradicator. The robot transforms itself into a suit for Superman to wear, essentially recharging his powers using what's left of the Earth's sunlight. This is what Superman wearing the Eradicator suit would've looked like.

Remember the test footage of the Superman costume that appeared online back in 2010? That's based on this costume, the so-called "disco suit" that pulses with light as Superman slowly regains his powers. As for who that's supposed to be wearing the suit, I have no idea but it somehow looks worse than Nic Cage.

I'm going to get flamed for this, but I honestly don't think this would've been all that bad. Yes, it would've been a bit over the top and ridiculous, but it also would've been made at the peak of Cage's and Burton's careers. Cage got pretty ripped for Con Air...I don't think he would've looked THAT bad as Supes. And while Burton has had his weak moments *cough* Alice *cough* he also made two awesome Batman movies with Michael Keaton, an actor who was, prior to Batman, known only for comedic

Anyway, just my two cents. Bring on the downvotes!

It's easy to believe this movie would have been a massive success given how popular Hugh Jackman's bullshit portrayal of Wolverine is.

...

I really hope the new flick pans out, only to hope they bring Doomsday in and tear shit up, which I think is what a lot of people want. Tim Burton, thank you for not making what would have been one of the worst superhero movies of all time, and fuck you for making a bunch of other worst remakes of all time.

"I want to take Lex Luthor's face... off."

This movie would be a masterpiece if John Travolta was Lex Luthor.

honestly

The Tim Burton one doesn't look half bad if it were part of an animated series but as live action yeah that would be horrible.

Glad, so glad this was not made. Imagine if it were, where would Tim Burton be? Probably the same. Don't know.

I like it. It's deifferent. Tired of the superman mythos as it is so i welcome any creative approach towards it. Burton is a great director and when given freedom to create he can bring magic. Would have LOVED to see his version

Yep, looked like this would have been shit, but I think the Superman Lives story would make for a great movie if done properly. I'd really like to see a Superman movie not go the usual boring "safe" route by just using Lex Luthor or Zod.

Bad Moves

Superman is so iconic that is very difficult to make an updates version, the best you could do is actualizing the costume and conserve it's simplicity. A great example is the new Jim Lee design and the new movie design. Taking out the red underwear over it's pants was a good move. Change little things like the neck and the tip of his sleeve and boots. Do not add complexity to the costume and most important, do not change his "S", You can change little things, just like they made on Superman

Again, because it's hugely iconic.

As much as I love Tim Burton these pictures just remind me of how wrong he would have been for a Superman movie, he was great for Batman however. Nicolas Cage would have been a terrible choice to play Superman. Damn I'm glad this movie never got made, it would have been a disaster.

This looks delightfully awful. I wish it had got made, it would have been the pinnacle of sheer awfullness. It would have been the subject of drunken mockery at viewings for generations.
