More details on The Flash emerge as DC expands their superhero stable

09.27.2010

The Flash has been pushed back in favor of more prominent DC superheroes for a while now, but since Marvel has their shit together enough to make an Avengers movies, DC is trying to follow suit.

The project is ramping up, and a treatment of the script is in. From producer and co-writer Greg Berlani speaking to superhero hype, we have a bit of info on what exactly it contains.

'Flash' as we're getting into it is interesting, too. Though Barry Allen was a little lighter in the comic, I think because of the nature that he was a CSI and moved in this world of crime before this stuff happened. I think it's tonally somewhere in between 'GL' and 'Dark Knight.' It's actually a little bit darker than when we were working on ('GL'), because you're dealing with somebody who is already a crimefighter in a world of those kinds of criminals and that kind of murder and homicide. I find you talk a lot about different films when you're working on a film, and we spend a lot more time talking about 'Se7en' or 'The Silence of the Lambs' as we construct that part of Barry's world, then I thought when we got into it. It helps balance a guy in a red suit who runs really fast.

In 'The Flash,' there's the sci-fi component and there's the crime component and it's fitting those two things together, and the sci-fi thing, we obviously want to nail that and honor that and do that in a way that feels visceral and real and cool and probably more in the tone of 'The Matrix" films or things like that.

I hate when producers describe movies in terms of other movies, and this just made me roll my eyes so hard they almost fell out of my head. We've got GREEN LANTERN, DARK KNIGHT, SE7EN, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and THE MATRIX in two paragraphs worth of description.

That being said, I'm not sure if a darker version of The Flash is really the best idea. Outside of Deadpool, he's one of the more loudmouth smartass superheroes I can think of, hence why I always though Ryan Reynolds would be good here rather than suiting up for GL. I would think they'd shoot more for IRON MAN or SPIDER-MAN than DARK KNIGHT or SE7EN in terms of tone here, but maybe I'm wrong. Whoops, now I'm using other movies to describe it. Shit!

I hope the avengers movie gets a sequel so they can bring in spider-man and wolverine. Oh wait, dc characters other than batman and superman matter...NOT!

the flash is not funny, hes not a smart alec, at least barry allan wasnt. barry was the square who wore bow ties and to quote dr who bow ties are cool.
as a hardcore flash fan i love the idea of a darker seven vibe because at his core, costume no withstanding barry allen was csi before csi was cool.

Agreed. Barry Allen was (is) a very different Flash than Wally West, the Flash whom the general public most recognizes. Reynolds would have made a good Wally, but a terrible Barry.

Yeah, but he was still struck by a bolt of lightening while holding chemicals, which in no way is dark or serious. I'm not saying Barry was as light as Wally but he definitley has a brighter personality than any of the characters in Se7en CSI or Silence of the Lambs.

There really is only one clear casting choice for The Flash... Danny DeVito.

To Brer B8a

That would be great inspired casting. I think he would be able to pull it off.

The Flash needs to be lighter and funnier than this, not Fantastic Four lame but he isn't Batman, that's for sure.

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS?

Seriously? While Barry was the more serious Flash the characters never been that dark. I think the tone your looking for DC is similar to IRON MAN or SPIDERMAN not SE7EN. BATMAN has a dark tone not FLASH.

Keep him funny

NPH is the clear choice for Barry Allen. He voiced him in the Justice League: New Frontier cartoon movie, fits the body type, and is a funny, capable smart-ass.

If Green Lantern does well and it probably will, then I wouldn't be surprised if this movie gets going into prouction very quickly. I wouldn't be surprised to see Bradley Cooper's name come up either.

My pics for Flash were always Reynolds or Evans but now that Reynolds has suited up for Green Lantern that leaves Chris Evans up for the role which I doubt he will take since he's already Captain America but you never know...

no way in hell does Evans get this role. Fantastic 4 to Captain America to The Flash? No way. My pick is Jared Paladecki or Bradley Cooper.

I wouldn't mind seeing the movie in a more of a Iron Man tone way. Not every movie has to be as serious and as dark as The Dark Knight. The Flash should be serious and somewhat dark, but should also be fun and somewhat crazy. This is a super hero movie that I really want to see happen, because I think The Flash is one of the better superhero's out there. Reynolds would have been perfect for The Flash, but my pick is for Jared Paladecki.

wrong flash

You're thinking of the wrong Flash. Barry's the serious one, Wally West jokes around and even then, Wally's been pretty grim and serious for a good long while now. Get your nerd rage straight.

NOTE UP THE TREATMENT

Well, here's an idea --- upload the treatment for folks to read, and let the fan decide if it's a good enough to invest money into the project!

Flash is a tough stretch, I think. There's a just not a lot of dramatic tension to sustain a movie, which is why I think it's taken so long to get him to the big screen. I haven't really followed the comics, but the tone of Se7en? Uh, what? They're really going to have to layer the character to make him work, other than just being a hero that runs really fast.

Do people read anymore?

He says it's in between Green Lantern and The Dark Knight, Green Lantern is probably like Spider-Man in terms of mood, The Flash is a little darker than that because of the world he lives within, completely understandable.

I bet they go the Daredevil route and give him super dark red and yellow leather....or the spider-man mesh sort of thing. Spandex is dead.

Dark flash is an awful idea

I hate it that these people with no imagination see something work for one character or story and apply that formula to everything. The Flash is a very light character. When I think about the Flash, I picture bright blue skies with fluffy white clouds, an uplifting score and half of the movie being so some sort of an after school special. all of this isn't bad. it's good. we need bright superheroes, no just dark and tortured ones. keep The Flash Bright.

Agreed with Terminal. We don't need every fucking superhero flick to be dark. The Flash should be in the tone of the Donner Superman and Favs Iron Man series. Fun, semi-light (Not completely goofy) adventure.

He's a superhero in red spandex who can run really fucking fast. Why do we need a dark movie? I don't want a Jack Black comedy, but we don't need Sin City either.
