UPDATE 2 - The LA Times is now calling bullshit on Variety's confirmation saying that they spoke to Summit's president of production who says they have not signed Bayona and are still meeting with potential candidates....

UPDATE - Variety has confirmed that indeed Bayona has signed on to direct ECLIPSE...

Boy, for a guy who doesn't really care much at all about the TWILIGHT franchise, I certainly seem to write an a lot of articles about it. This is my third article just on who will be directing the third film in the franchise, ECLIPSE. I probably would've skipped writing about this (after reporting on the rumors that Drew Barrymore and Paul Weitz were in talks) but I'm actually semi-intrigued by this news...

The latest hot ECLIPSE rumor, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, is that Juan Antonio Bayona, director of the kick-ass Spanish horror flick THE ORPHANAGE, is the frontrunner to direct. Bayona, a protege of Guillermo del Toro, was developing an adaptation of David Moody's novel "Hater." Should he come aboard to direct ECLIPSE, that project would get dropped like a hot potato and I might be tempted to actually one day watch one of the TWILIGHT films. Hey I never thought I'd watch a HARRY POTTER film but then Alfonso Cuaron had to go and direct one and I sat through THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN (and actually enjoyed it). As is the caveat with all these ECLIPSE rumors, nothing is set in stone, no one is commenting, yada yada, stay tuned as it develops...

Extra Tidbit: Let's hope that American remake of THE ORPHANAGE never happens.

King
Yeah, King has been very vocal in his support and love for the Harry Potter books. As for Twilight, he publicly said that they're horrible, and that Stephanie Meyer couldn't write to save her life.

As for the article, this is a really interesting choice. It would certainly give Eclipse some much-needed edge that the first one was sorely lacking.

Twilight and Harry Potter shouldn't even be compared. The quality difference is pretty wide. There's a reason why most agreed with Stephen King.

But with that said, Bayona as director would be the only reason I'd give a damn about this movie...
