The Insidious horror franchise officially files for Chapter 4

05.16.2016

The book of INSIDIOUS is going to be getting a little bigger with a fourth chapter today getting the greenlight from Universal and Blumhouse. Lin Shaye hasn't interacted with enough evil spirits and demons for the horror franchise, and, as a result, she'll be back for INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 4, which will hit theaters just in time for Halloween next year.

Leigh Whannell will once again be penning the screenplay for the next entry in the series, only this time he won't be directing as well. Adam Robitel (THE TAKING OF DEBORAH LOGAN) has landed the filmmaking responsibilities and hopefully will be able to get INSIDIOUS back on track after it seemed to suffer a dip in quality with the last film.

As for where on the INSIDIOUS timeline CHAPTER 4 will take place... well, go ahead and start guessing. CHAPTER 3 was a prequel to the previous two, dating back before Shaye's Elise ever crossed paths with the Lamberts, so is #4 going to keep following an younger and slightly less experienced paranormal investigator, or are we going to hit new events that take place after that pair of early films? Your speculation is as good as mine, so have at it.

INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 4 has been dated for an October 20, 2017 release.

Love every entry thus far (with the original one still being my favorite). Curious to see what Wan and Whannell still have up their sleeve to keep the franchise going in a fun, and spooked way.

I shouldn't be surprised.

The reviews for the 3rd film were as good as the 1st film, so they think it's a free pass to not stop making sequels until one of them flops financially.

What's the point? The story ended in the 2nd film. I'm not interested in seeing more of ELISE and her ghostbusters.

It's sad to see this franchise go down the tubes like this. As a huge fan of both Wan & Whannell, I gotta say even I wasn't the biggest fan of the 2nd one and didn't even bother seeing the 3rd. The first will always be one of my favorite horror films of all time and I hope these guys can keep producing quality work like that.

I stopped after Chapter 2

I enjoyed the almost cartoony horror elements of the first two films, but like most modern horror movies, endless sequels get bad really quickly.
