More Unbreakable 2 talk

06.18.2009

M. Night Shyamalan must be on his last legs right now, so it makes sense that he is talking again about making a sequel to UNBREAKABLE, by far the best work of his career. Yeah, that's right, I said it. Here's what he's saying:

“I don’t know where all the parties are in the world. Sam [Jackson] is like ‘Mr. Comic Book’ now. And Bruce, I don’t know what he’s up to. I don’t know where Disney’s at in their head and what kind of movies they’re up for making. But yeah, I love that movie.”

I don't know where you guys stand on his body of work but I'm sure I'll find out in the strike-backs shortly. Me though? I flat out love UNBREAKABLE. But even so I think it works best as it is. So I'm not sure I'm down with another film. I don't trust Shammy to do his own shit justice anymore.
Extra Tidbit: Sam Jackson has mentioned in the past that he was interested in revisiting things.

leave it

I love it too. Thats why I think it's best left alone because M. Night would be sure to fuck up every good thing he did with the first one.

The twist will be that he really has no powers and Samuel L. Jacksons character made the first movie up.

Not being facetious in the least -- you couldn't find me any more sincere than how I feel about that movie. I love The Village, the political subtext, the great performance by Bryce Dallas Howard (shame she hasn't done, or been given anything, as good as that role), the great JNH score, the ending...Sixth Sense may have launched him on the map, but this is a better film.

It's a shame about The Happening, though. Oh, that was terrible...

Also I'm surprised no one hasn't mentioned that Unbreakable was originally conceived as a trilogy.

I have a soft spot for Unbreakable and you you could see the potential M. Night had, then he let his ego get the best of him & made 3 shit movies after Signs.

Sequel? SURE.

Jig Saw hit it right on the head. PLENTY of other superhero conventions Shams can cover... the use of power and knowledge he now possesses, cooperation (or lack thereof) with the authorities, maybe even partnership with a private detective, bails bondsman, or better yet a sidekick... maybe someone else that's realized an equally-subtle powerset. Add some danger when they realize they don't know a thing about heroing or something. Tons of fun possibilities but he should skip that "OO! A TWIST"

The original had all the great elements of an origin story, but it's a shame the box office wasn't so hot and equally a shame that Night had to dictate his script on the lack of interest in the film (outside the 'net).

I don't know how much studios would invest him or this project -- if The Last Airbender bombs, would he crawl back to this out of desperation, and would they give him the money?

And, for the record, The Village is still his best film.

At this point I would kill for a sequel to this but I would even love a novel if they can not do a film on it. Written by M. Night himself of course.

Unbreakable was awesome and in my all time top 10... But a second movie would be awful. One of the reasons Unbreakable was so great is that it ended the way it did.

Unbreakable was good, and definitely one of his best, but you gotta like that style of pacing and some people just don't. My roommate, for instance, LOATHES Unbreakable.

It must be a taste thing, or something.

BLAME FOX

I love how with , Die Hard 4 getting a PG-13, Babylon A.D., Max Payne, Hitman, Alien Vs. Predator, and Wolverine all sucking everyone blamed Fox and rightfully so. When The Happening came out it wasnt Fox's fault it was M. Night's. I seriously still blame Fox for it.

Unbreakable is M.Night's best film and I honestly don't mind seeing a sequel. Reason being is the fact that he could follow the arc of a superhero. The first film explored a man discovering he has the power and with the sequel it can be how he intends to use it. I don't mean explosions and a costume I want more screen time with Willis & Jackson. Especially since Mr. Glass is now in an asylum.

I LOVE UNBREAKABLE! It's the film that changed me during film school. I know it sounds ridiculous but it altered my perspective towards filmmaking. At that point I couldnt recall a superhero film put to celluloid that was so realistic in the vein of my favorite comics.

Bottom line, Shyamalan is a genius even with his other work going severely downhill since then. The original script to the happening was incredible but the final product was an unfortunate turd. I would love to see him return

I would love to see him return to Unbreakable if only for selfish purposes. I want to know where David Dunn goes from here!!! Personally, I would love to see him continue it in graphic novel format but that or a film would make me jizz in my pants.

It's the only Shyamalan movie I own. It's a true comic book movie set in the real world, and it's done well.

Without a doubt....

I am 100% positive that "Unbreakable" is M. Night's true masterpiece film and that all his other movies pale by comparison.

It was the last brilliant film he made and everything after it was shit. I'm still not up for a sequel to this though as the first storyline was finished and doesn't need to be explored further.

unwatchable

that scene in the first one where the kid is pointing the gun at willis... horrible.

The scene where M.Night tries to play a drug dealer... horrible

The slow and deliberate pacing of all M.Night's precious dialogue... horrible

Unbreakable in general... horrible.

pure shit.

ahhh...

me and Thoo...on the same track for once...What made this movie unique and interesting was that it was an origin story...get it? It stopped right around where most super hero flicks begin...make a sequel and that element is taken away...MNight needs to just breake-able his own stale, weak mold and try something completely different...like comedy or something...he has taken himself too seriously for too long, and he is not a good writer/director of this "mindf**k" genre...he fluked with a few,

good-bye [link] because this idea is terrible.

Thoo, I have been waiting a long time to say this: Well said.

why do you care?

Darko acts like he'll have to bankroll the thing.
if it gets made and you dont want to see it...then dont see it. simple no?

I enjoyed Unbreakable, but it was kinda ruined by the quote at the beginning of the film, I can't remember what it was exactly, but it basically signposted that the film was about superheroes - which I didn't know when I sat down to watch it. If he hadn't done that I would have found the superhero element a real surprise as the story progressed. Strange decision.

I agree with HoyleHaw - but I never went to see Sixth Sense, I guessed the twist from the trailer :P

GAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!! Fuck no... fuck... no! While he's at it, why not a sequel to The Happening? Then he can make sequels for his two worst movies... hell, the two worst movies ever!

Whatever tho. Nothing is surprising nowadays.

Love it

I really liked Unbreakable, its the most realistic view of a superhero that you will ever get. It was low key and the build up was slow (so I can see why people dont like it) but the payoff was great.

I haven;t watched one of the man's movies since "Signs" so really I'm limited in my opinion. "The Sixth Sense" is a good movie plain and simple. Well-made, and with an ending a lot of folks (not everyone) didn't see coming. But it's also fun to go back and watch how he played with the audience's expectations. He messed up by thinking that's the only kind of movie he could make, the one with the Big Twist. And with few exceptions I pretty much hate movies that hinge on the Big

"Unbreakable" may as well be called the REAL first super-hero movie that set up this whole movement. It's got the drama and character development down, and treats the material like it's real life. But because Shyamalan felt the need for the twist (not a bad twist at that) it is still inferior in my opinion. And while it almost begs for a sequel, the time has passed.

"Signs" was a good movie up until they unveiled the alien. And I wasn't crazy about the whole religious angle beyond what it said about Gibson's character. The moment a CGI alien vulnerable to water shows up, all suspense is pretty much gone.

Unbreakable Sucked!

I hated all of M. Nights movies, even The Sixed Sense (To be fair, I had the end spoiled before I actually saw it.) All of his other movies were shit. The one I thought I would like was SIGNS and wow was that horrible. An alien race that cannot be near water tries to invade a planet the is almost entirely made up of water? That makes sense! Night should go back to directing Straight to video Rosie O'Donnell Kids flicks!
