Mortal Instruments adaptation is the latest attempt to fill the looming Harry Potter void

Unless JK Rowling changes her mind and comes up with some new HARRY POTTER stories, in the near future there's going to be a movie audience looking for an alternate world of magic and monsters.

So far the scramble for viable replacement franchises (or TWILIGHT competitors) has yielded some misses (PERCY JACKSON, THE VAMPIRE'S ASSISTANT, etc.), but Screen Gems is hoping they have the prize.

The studio has teamed with Constantin Film (RESIDENT EVIL) and Unique Features to develop the motion picture franchise MORTAL INSTRUMENTS, based on The New York Times Bestselling book series by Cassandra Clare. Jessica Postigo penned the script which is based on the first book in the series, CITY OF BONES.

The story is set in contemporary New York City, where seemingly ordinary teenager Clary Fray (no relation to Slayer descendant Melaka, presumably) discovers she is the descendent of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of warriors dedicated to driving demons out of our world. When Clary’s mother disappears, she must join a daring group of young Shadowhunters on an adventure, which leads her through a city filled with mischievous fairies, eccentric warlocks, werewolf gangs and other strange creatures.

Extra Tidbit: I don't know how many more young adult book series there are out there that seem to have similar concepts, but I'm guessing they'll all eventually be headed to the screen...
