Mortal Kombat: Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen says the big screen reboot will not connect to the web series

09.17.2013

Director Kevin Tancharoen has succesfully transformed his well-crafted MORTAL KOMBAT: REBIRTH pitch reel into the great web series MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY which is now entering into a second season. Tancharoen is also still attached to direct the long in development third MORTAL KOMBAT film. As LEGACY continues to develop storylines for classic characters like Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Sub Zero and others, it leaves the question as to the status and direction of MORTAL KOMBAT III. Will it follow the stories from LEGACY? Will it feature the same actors?

According to Tancharoen, the answer is neither. In an interview with Coming Soon, the director gave this update on the third film in the series:

"We're still pushing through on that. The script is in a good place, we're just kind of figuring out the budget and locations and that whole process is where we're at,"

At last update, the third MORTAL KOMBAT was being written by Oren Uziel (22 JUMP STREET, MEN IN BLACK 4) who also wrote REBIRTH for Tancharoen. But, what will the actual film be about?

"I think everyone's intention is to start fresh because we want Legacy to live on its own possibly for multiple seasons, and when it comes to Mortal Kombat, it's been around for 20+ years. We're going to take the mythology and add another layer on it so it can live on for another 20 years, or more! I think this is a unique opportunity to set that ground work."

So, we still don't know whether or not the new MORTAL KOMBAT will be an R-rated film like Tancharoen's REBIRTH short proposed or if it will be more along the lines of Paul. W.S. Anderson's PG-13 original from 1995. Either way, we still have MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY II premiering on September 26th with the talents of Casper Van Dien and the original Shang Tsung himself, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.

This guy is a hack and this web series has sucked balls.

Mortal Kombat, grounded in reality makes no sense. If there is another MK movie it has to be made to look similar to the first MK movie. Or at least do the story from MK9, that was a perfect MK movie. This is going to be a horrible movie if it ever gets made. The original wasn't perfect but it at least felt like a MK movie. This in no way shape or form will do that. They are confusing a fan made video (which there are hundreds of better ones out there) for something with potential. They need to

They need to get collaboration with Ed Boon and his writing staff, his past few games have had amazing stories and he needs to be attached somehow. Netherealm studios needs to produce this and generate the script. If they aren't a part of it then there is no way another MK movie will work.

I can't imagine the new film looking anything like Anderson's version. That was cheesy 90's video game adaptation. Both Rebirth and Legacy have treated the franchise with far more respect and seriousness. Both have been a great watch, and the second season looks even better. I imagine that, even if the film is different in terms of story, it will have a similar tone. Mortal Kombat is still one of the best adaptations of a video game ever (which really isn't saying much), and hopefully the new

Personally, with the success of the web series', I am excited to see what he has in store.

I just caught up on the first season last night. While I thoroughly enjoyed those episodes (particularly Lord Raiden and Scorpion's stories), I think it's probably wise, at least from a story perspective, to keep them separate, since they're already a departure from his pretty awesome Rebirth short. Would be nice if they retain some of the talent from the series for the movie either way. Seems everyone is in agreement nobody can play Shang Tsung better than Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, anyway. But I

But I like that they are really building a world in which we can believe the classic fights might take place (I've never forgiven Anderson's original for not doing more with Scorpion, and whenever I think about that movie, I remember the anticlimactic ending to his fight with Johnny Cage).
