Mortal Kombat Rebirth turns into a web series with Michael Jai White

01.17.2011

When the MORTAL KOMBAT REBIRTH short hit last year in June, it put the internet in a tizzy. The short was directed by Kevin Tancharoen (FAME) in hopes for a movie deal. This version of the Mortal Kombat story tried to bring a more realistic approach to the characters. The lines were drawn between fans over whether or not this was a good idea.

As someone who has been playing this game since the beginning, I was cut down the middle. Visually it looked damn good and there were some fitting choices for the characters. Jeri Ryan played Sonya Blade and her superior/friend Jackson "Jax" Briggs was fittingly played by Michael Jai White. It took Baraka from a nomadic mutant (Tarkata) to a doctor turned serial killer. (Sorry, DO NOT WANT. Plus he kills Johnny Cage. Boo!) Oren Uziel who was rumored to be writing a third MORTAL KOMBAT movie did the scripting for this project.

For those of you who were looking forward to the possibility of a new film to come out of this have to settle for a web series instead. MK Rebirth will be returning as a 10-episode web series dedicated to the video game. Tancharoen is directing with himself, Todd Helbing, and Aaron Helbing writing. Shooting starts this February in Vancouver. Michael Jai White will return as Jax and other characters expected to show up are Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Durak, Kabal, Kitana, Mileena and Scorpion. Here's what Bloody Disgusting offered up plot wise: "a few Earthlings will fight to save the planet from Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung, two Gods ruling over parallel universes, or something to that effect." No release date was given.

Extra Tidbit: Anyone psyched about the new Mortal Kombat game? Check out the trailer. In love.

Is it weird that Michael Jai White is black and Michael Ian Black is white?

The short really sucked but I'm willing to see what happens with this. You want to know how you do Mortal Kombat? Check out the commercial for Mortal Kombat II. Street Fighter: Legacy had the right idea.

Why not a movie?

At the time i really liked the first movie. The costumes were perfect, fights were cool, casting was perfect and the music was superb, it could have been more brutal and if you see it now its a little bit dated. Forget part 2 and expand on that. Anyway mjw is perfect for the mk universe. Maybe use some action stars (like expendables) from the past.

Bring it on

Wish it was an actual movie or TV series, but I'll take this. The short was awesome.

Really excited about this. With the new game coming out, one that is soaked in blood, it's good to see MK getting back to it's roots. Let's hope this is the start of good things to come for the future of the series!

that was cool...but i like the original movie better. and i would like a well-directed movie based on the actual games and not reality again.

Dug the short. I can see where it pissed off the hardcore fans. I just see it as a loose interpretation, not where the series itself is heading. Ill check it out, either on the web or more likely dvd

You can minus me into oblivion but I really dig the realistic approach to MK. It's fresh.

Mortal Kombat can be re-discovered with big, imaginative direction, great fight choreography, and convincing settings. Making it 'reality based' makes it seem sillier than it did in the first place. In my opinion.

I've been a Mortal Kombat fan since the 1st one. And I do have to admit, I was getting tired of the same old re-tread shit Mortal Kombat has come out with over the years. It's actually cool to see it with a fresh new take to the whole universe. I would love to see that made in to a movie. And I already have Rebirth purchased at Gamestop. Waiting with bated breath for April!!!!

I was wondering what happened to this. Not sure if I will watch it on the web, but may pick up the blu-ray one day. Looks cool.

Not impressed

Won't be seeing these webisodes, OR the new movie if they continue to pursue with this kind of direction.

A webseries can definitely work!

Just look at Dr. Horrible and Angel of Death.

I'm stoked.

Sweet deal. I can settle for a web series. I thought the short was awesome and a good direction for the series. I actually liked the more realistic approach, as I have always felt that the characters from the original game were a little too silly for a film.

Excited to hear this! Agreed with Baraka, his reinterpritation was really the only sour spot of this video. Reminded me of a cannibal Vega from Street Fighter.

That short should be the basis for a reboot of the MK series. I'll see the web series either way.

I loved the short. But this shouldn't be for the web only. It could run on TV as well.
