Movie Jail: This week's defendant is...Arnold Schwarzenegger!

Nov. 18, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

Movie Jail

This is Movie Jail, a unique maximum security prison that houses some of the worst writers, directors, actors and producers from Hollywood and beyond. Their crimes? The offenses vary from convict to convict but most of these inmates have contributed negatively to the film world to some capacity and his or her misdeeds have covered a long enough period of time that the authorities had to intervene. In each column a defendant is put on trial, arguments are made, and then it is up to YOU, the jury, to decide if the person is guilty or not guilty of crimes against cinema. Their lives are in your hands, dude.

The Defendant

The Case

The Prosecution: Escape Plan, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Collateral Damage, The 6th Day,  End of Days, Batman & Robin, Jingle All The Way, Twins, Raw Deal, Red Sonja

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, Arnold Schwarzenegger is without a doubt one of the biggest action stars of all time, but it's been a long time since we've had a truly awesome Ah-nuld film. You could argue part of the reason why is because of the time he spent away from movies, but even before he was "The Governator" of California, Mr. Schwarzenegger and his films were on the decline. Most of Mr. Schwarzenegger's movies from the late 90s and early 00s underperformed and received very mixed reviews from critics, and it's just been more of the same since his return to film.

Mr. Schwarzenegger is an extremely charismatic and fun actor, but no one hires Mr. Schwarzenegger for his acting range: they cast him because he's Arnold f*cking Schwarzenegger. However, that doesn't mean we should ignore his bombs, his poor film choices or how movie goers just don't connect to his movies like they once did. The problem is since the mid-90s, most of his films feel incredibly weak when compared to previous ones in his filmography.

Look at movies like Collateral Damage, The 6th Day, and his latest Escape Plan: do they come anywhere close to the level of greatness of say Total Recall, Commando, or even Eraser? Not by a long shot. They're formulaic, bland, and not nearly as entertaining as you'd hope for a film featuring Mr. Schwarzenegger. Escape Plan would have been the biggest movie of the 1980s even with not so great reviews, but critics weren't impressed with it, and most of the public ignored it. You can say the problems in Batman & Robin had nothing to do with the actor, but he still took the part, and he's had a few other paycheck films as well. Arnold super fans might love the cheesiness of End of Days, and enjoy the nostalgia that comes with rewatching films like Junior or Jingle All The Way, but would you call them great or even good movies? The prosecution doesn't.

There was a time when Mr. Schwarzenegger was the king of action movies, but that was ages ago, and it's obvious movie goers won't flock to movies anymore just to watch him do the same thing he's been doing for decades. The prosecution knows he gets shit for his acting, however he could still do some drama like Sylvester Stallone did in Cop Land, but instead, we get limp imitations of other films that starred the actor. The upcoming Sabotage has potential, but will it surprise you if it turns out to be another unremarkable post-governor role/film for the actor? At what point will Mr. Schwarzenegger start doing VOD stuff? The prosecution doesn't want to see that, and is positive the jury doesn't want to either. Sending Mr. Schwarzenegger to Movie Jail will help the actor in the long run, and will give him some time to think about his future in movies.

The Defense: The Last Stand, Eraser, Junior, True Lies, Last Action Hero, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Total Recall, Kindergarten Cop, Red Heat, Predator, The Running Man, Commando, Conan the Destroyer, Conan the Barbarian, The Terminator

Ladies and gentlemen, my client shouldn't be sent to Movie Jail, and the reason why is actually presented by the prosecution: "no one hires Mr. Schwarzenegger for his acting range: they cast him because he's Arnold f*cking Schwarzenegger." The actor is only doing what almost everyone expects from him in a film: kill a bunch of people while delivering hilarious one-liners. Few do it as well as Mr. Schwarzenegger, and while some of his recent films haven't performed that well in theaters, people still love the big guy.

As the prosecution states, my client isn't known for being a strong actor. Hell, the most acclaimed he's ever received has been for parts that required little dialogue (the first two Terminators), but the defense argues the actor is actually pretty underrated, especially when it comes to comedies. Films like Kindergarten Cop, Junior, and Twins only work because of Mr. Schwarzenegger's performances in them. They aren't incredibly smart or original comedies, and sometimes the humor is unintentional and due to my client's acting, however these movies simply would not be the same, nor as good, without Mr. Schwarzenegger. Even Jingle All the Way is tolerable because of my client. Mr. Schwarzenegger might not be a fantastic actor, but he doesn't mail in performances either. He's done most of his own stunt work, and even if it is a movie he shouldn't care about (once again, Jingle All the Way), he still gives 110%.

There isn't a need to explore some of Mr. Schwarzenegger previous films, because most of you know and love them. Predator, True Lies, Commando, and The Terminator films are classic Arnold, and it's hard to imagine another actor being as memorable as my client in these films. His earlier films weren't critic proof, however many fans flocked to theaters to see his films in the 80s and 90s because of the actor, and they made a killing at the box office. Just because Mr. Schwarzenegger isn't as popular now as he was then doesn't mean he should be sent to Movie Jail, and the defense is confident the jury will feel the same way.

IN CLOSING...

Does the prosecution have a case, or is the jury going to show up at his front door with pitchforks and torches? Does the actor deserve Movie Jail, or does he just need some career guidance? How much is he to blame for films like Batman & Robin and Collateral Damage? This is a big one guys: GUILTY or NOT GUILTY for Arnold Schwarzenegger?

COMMENT BELOW WITH YOUR VERDICT!

*The cases for and against a defendant going to Movie Jail by the author are not necessarily his views and opinions but they are some of the beliefs that one would use to effectively make an argument for both sides. Not quite a devil's advocate but you get the point. Anyways, this is all in fun so don't take it too seriously. We have a separate jail for those people called "Troll Tower" and believe me you do NOT want to go there.

WHAT SAY YOU, GUILTY OR NOT?

LAST WEEK'S VERDICT

Last week the prosecution tried to send Orlando Bloom to Movie Jail, but the jury wasn't down with sending Legolas to prison, and declared the actor NOT GUILTY of all charges. Mr. Bloom was saved by his role in The Lord of The Rings, but members of the jury also voiced their opinion that the actor hasn't done anything truly God awful, and doesn't deserve to be sitting in a jail cell with inmates like Gerard Butler and Ashton Kutcher. But seriously, playing Legolas totally saved his ass.

PREVIOUS VERDICTS

GUILTY Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy, Vince Vaughn, Tim Burton, The Farrelly Brothers, Michael Bay, Jessica Alba, Ice Cube, Gerard Butler, Halle Berry, Marlon Wayans, Julia Roberts, M. Night Shyamalan , Katherine Heigl , Cuba Gooding, Jr. , Tyler Perry, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson, Ashton Kutcher, Happy Madison Productions, Jennifer Lopez, Bruce Willis, Paul W.S. Anderson, Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker

NOT GUILTY Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Nic Cage, John Travolta, Oliver Stone, Ben Stiller, Jim Carrey, Wes Craven, Matthew McConaughey, Robert Rodriguez, Kristen Stewart, Roland Emmerich, Kevin Costner, Sandra Bullock, Hilary Swank, Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves, Kevin Smith, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson, Anna Faris, Robin Williams, Charlize Theron, Ray Liotta, Jason Statham, Paul Walker, Will Smith, Salma Hayek, Michael Cera, Johnny Depp, Ryan Reynolds, Milla Jovovich, John Singleton, Jon Voight, Jack Black, Brian De Palma, Jerry Bruckheimer, Nicole Kidman, Justin Timberlake, Freddy Krueger (Halloween Special), Johnny Knoxville, Orlando Bloom

Not Guilty of course...and so is Bruce Willis!

Arnold is guilty of being in recent films which don't have any attraction to them, it's not him.

definitely not guilty

His last films before his term as governor were all pretty bad. But the two he has made since his comeback, even though both flopped, were pretty damn decent. Besides that in escape Plan he gave one of the best performances out of his entire career. No way in hell does Schwarzenegger deserve to be in movie jail!

This column is getting a bit boring

It doesn't seem like a lot of thought goes into it and there's always the same pattern.

[Insert legendary actor] makes shit movies now but made awesome movies back in the day. Not guilty!

Definitely not as good as the unpopular opinion, c'mon hollywood or ink and pixel. I still love joblo!

Not even a little bit guilty. Mr. Schwarzenegger is free to go with the court's apologies. Now go LET OFF SOME STEAM, BENNETT!

PS: How my Angelina Jolie recommendation coming along? I imagine she could cause quite the kerfuffle in the jury room.

No way is Arnold ever going to deserve movie jail. Too many classics. It's clear you guys need some ideas for the upcoming weeks, so may I suggest: Jennifer Garner, Steve Martin, Shia LaBeouf, Clive Owen, Colin Farrell, Michelle Rodriguez, or Alec Baldwin. Those would actually be interesting choices for movie jail.

Not guilty. Not just because he's had way more hits than misses( to me anyway. Raw Deal kicked ass to my young eyes back then.) But because old Ahnuld still has some left in the tank. When the right role that suits his age comes along. (and no, not as a Terminator...) the film he's doing about his daughter being infected by a zombie virus sounds like a possible winner. We'll see. NOT GUILTY

Guilty, Guilty, Guilty!

Look, I love Arnold, I got moments of pure ecstasy when watching The Last Stand, but I still walked out at the end with the opinion that it was an awful film with an awful performance from Arnold. I tried to watch Expendables 2 but that was atrocious as well. I agree that he needs to pick a comedy or maybe even go for broke and do a satire/spoof of a super serious drama, but with Arnold in the lead that normally would have someone like Matt Damon in the lead.

Now see, I went into Last Stand thinking it was going to be a brainless action movie with a simple plot and passable acting. It was, so I was entirely satisfied and enjoyed the crap out of it. Don't treat every movie as if it's trying to be some masterpiece (because it most definitely wasn't) and you might like more of them.

WHEN ARE PEOPLE GOING TO GET IT?

Critics DO judge movies based on what they are. Go to Arnold's Rotten Tomatoes page. He has movies with more than 90%. If his movies get bad reviews is because they're not as fun compared to his other ones.

THE EXPENDABLES 1 & 2 were an homage to the '80s action flicks. But THE LAST STAND had a more serious tone, and it didn't feel like a throwback. It felt like they were actually trying to revive that genre. Sorry Arnold, but times change and movies evolve. Nowadays, action movies can be

It felt like they were actually trying to revive that genre. Sorry Arnold, but times change and movies evolve. Nowadays, action movies can be smart and well-acted. Actually, they also could be back then (TERMINATOR was), but if the movie was fun enough then it got a pass. That was the case with CONAN, COMMANDO and PREDATOR . But it wasn't the case with RED SONJA. And his filmography kept being hit-or-miss during the '90s, and mostly miss in this new millenium. And that's why he's Guilty.

I think he's at his worst in movies where (at least at the beginning) he's an everyday man. We all forgive him for not having enough acting range and we pretend he doesn't have that accent... as long as he doesn't push it. He's believable as a cop, an army man, a terrorist, a warrior, a robot, a prince, a clone, a twin born from an experiment and even MR. FREEZE. But suspension of disbelief is limited, so he wasn't belieavable in TOTAL RECALL, JINGLE ALL THE WAY nor COLLATERAL DAMAGE.

His recent films have not been big hits but I think that it has more to do with what modern audiences want more than anything, it also has to do with terrible promoting. The Last Stand was actually a pretty good flick, End of Days should not be in the prosecution. The man has had his share of misses but the good outweighs the bad by quite a bit. While he never be accused of being the greatest actor of his generation the man is still a legend in his own right.

While he's been excellent in past roles, and starred in several amazing action films, he has never once challenged himself the same way Stallone (or even Willis) has, thus leading to the least varied/ most boring filmography of the era's action stars. While he can be used effectively by talented filmmakers, left to his own devices/ bad direction he's too cheesey to be taken seriously. Having surprisingly enjoyed 'The Last Stand', I do think there's hope, but he needs to vary things up.

I've been following this site for two years now and this is the first time I felt the need to register and comment. Arnold is a legend who (along with Sly) made an entire era of movies. I don't see how The Last Stand and Escape Plan were bad. As far as I know TLS made zero money but was generally liked by both the critics and the viewers who saw it. (and Arnold was never liked by the critics). It's not his fault today's crowd in the US only supports sequels and cgi comic book adaptations.

Anything else can't make any money, but it more than enough makes it up worldwide(Rambo 4, Ex1 and 2, Jack Reacher). Also Escape plan was no failure at all. It made over 100 millions so far on a 50 mil budget. But the sad part is, in the US where action movies were born it made only 20 mil.

You just, man, Freddy K a while ago now Arnold. You guys must be running out of subjects to charge. I mean... its the freaking terminator... the man who rocked expendables 2... To even think about putting him in Movie Jail... SHAME! And he ran a damn state in between! Double shame.

Guilty

It's clear I'm in the minority here, but I agree that Arnold's later work is not nearly as good as his earlier stuff. Yes, he's played some great characters but THE LAST STAND sucked: I was counting plot holes within the first 10 minutes, despite my willingness to give Ahnuld the benefit of the doubt.

I'd argue for a suspended sentence with James Cameron as his parole officer.

READ THE SCRIPT LIKE 10X

Arnie just needs to read these scripts a few more times, and then pass them on to friends to read them too --- then make a decision .... In an interview back in the 80s Maria read the Total Recall script and told him he needs to do this movie -- Also, END OF DAYS --- the studio changed the script dramatically --- Arnie support to be battling Satan, which stood as tall as a building in the original script before the studio decided to save money !!!

Guil..... just kidding!

None of the films he's made since he came back have sucked, I don't know why some people disliked Last Stand, certainly got my nomination for most underated at next years golden schmoes.
It's been a good year for action flicks (Bullet in the Head is the only one I can think of that sucked) and the Arnie flicks have been a good part of this.

NOT GUILTY

Are you smoking the drugs? Arnold Schwarzenegger could spend the rest of his life doing "Medea-style" cross-dressing movies where he plays a "hilarious" fat Austrian house frau, and he STILL wouldn't be eligible for movie-jail. The dude is responsible for an entire decade of the greatest action flicks of all time.
Not Guilty, and moving for court costs.

Arnold gets a lifetime pass to avoid movie jail. He's an icon and he could easily escape movie jail if he was wrongfully sent there. It seems like you guys are running out of legitimate people to debate this on.

Not Guilty, by lack of reasonable doubt.

Itsn't it weird...actors and actresses who were big 20 or 30 years ago, are sliding down the acting scale, and are almost listed as B actors, which is where we find Arnold...He has created or personified some of the greatest character cliches' to date, and in the last few years, he has put out crap.....but he was white-hot decades ago...so not gulty!

What the heck is wrong with you? It's Arnold, the Michael Jordan of action cinema. Yes, he's in the retired stage of his career, but he can still run circles around any modern action star. Heck, he practically birthed our idea of action cinema.

And, I disagree regarding his acting. Arnold is a solid actor. You don't put him in Shakespeare, mind you, but he excels in high-concept action (he crushed it in Total Recall) and is a solid comedic actor with a rubber face and great timing.

NOT GUILTY........and.......

In what F-ING universe is Junior better than Twins? Escape Plan was great. Its not his fault that todays "sophisticated" audience passed it over, that doesn't make it bad. Batman & Robin had potential, but it was ruined by Schumacher. Give it a different direction, tell Clooney to play Seth Gecko (From Dusk till Dawn) in a Batsuit, cast Arnie as Bane instead of Freeze, and the film would have been epic.

Arnold could never be guilty even if he makes crap movies for the rest of his career. Maybe I'm the only one, but I thought End of Days was a really fun movie and was a little shocked to see it on the prosecution.

Shouldn't be on trial at all.

I didn't actually read the article. Arnold is a legend, one of the most hugely charismatic and likeable actors of all time, and THE king of all action stars. Predator is probably the greatest sci-fi action horror flick ever made and Commando is the most instantly quotable action movie ever. The Last Stand wasn't great, but it was decent action entertainment that showed that Arnold can still kick ass. He is absolutely not guilty at all.

What...?

Most of the movies listed in your "case" I quite enjoyed... "The 6th Day" is totally awesome, and completely underrated, IMHO. And I thought his performances in The Last Stand and Escape Plan were about as great as we can expect. He's had a few misses, sure... but he's been in dozens of great and successful films.

Definitely NOT GUILTY.

He's been able to embrace playing on his image in that Adam West sort of way and still come off as a badass. He's been able to work his way through some PR scandals and the public seems to have largely forgiven him after the illegitimate child revelation. And really, nobody came out of Batman & Robin looking good.

I didn't even have to read the article to know that he is definitely not guilty. Arnold is an action Icon and has starred in some of the most iconic action films and has played some of the greatest action heroe of all time. Is he probably past his glory at this time? Sure. But in no way does he deserve movie jail.

Again, not guilty.

Even some of the movies you have in the prosecution's case aren't all that bad, or if they are it isn't because he gave a bad (or worse than normal, for him) performance. End of Days is still a guilty pleasure for me. But in the end he's not guilty because of Terminator, Conan, and Kindergarten Cop. Those trump his worst by far.
