Movie Jail: This week's defendant is...Kate Hudson!

06.03.2013by:

Movie Jail

This is Movie Jail, a unique maximum security prison that houses some of the worst writers, directors, actors and producers from Hollywood and beyond. Their crimes? The offenses vary from convict to convict but most of these inmates have contributed negatively to the film world to some capacity and his or her misdeeds have covered a long enough period of time that the authorities had to intervene. In each column a defendant is put on trial, arguments are made, and then it is up to YOU, the jury, to decide if the person is guilty or not guilty of crimes against cinema. Their lives are in your hands, dude.

The Defendant

Kate Hudson

The Case

The Prosecution: Gossip, Alex & Emma, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Raising Helen, You, Me and Dupree, Fool's Gold, My Best Friend's Girl, Bride Wars, A Little Bit of Heaven, Something Borrowed

Ladies and gentlemen, today the prosecution has set their aim on Kate Garry Hudson for Movie Jail and we believe we have a very good case against the actress. While Miss Hudson did wow audience members with her breakout performance as Penny Lane in Almost Famous it's been a steady stream of shitty romantic comedies ever since. The prosecution understands that an attractive actress almost always gets stuck doing at least a handful of these films in their career but most of her films in this genre are just overwhelmingly bad and Miss Hudson generally hasn't brought much to these roles either.

As terrible as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is it might actually be one of her better films and that in itself is bad sign. Alex & Emma has a horrible premise and even worse execution, Raising Helen is a shallow, ugly mess, You, Me and Dupree is painfully unfunny, and Bride Wars is just an attractive looking turd. 2008 was a "banner" year for the actress when she earned a Razzie nomination for appearing in two of the worst movies of the year: My Best Friend's Girl with Dane Cook (yikes) and the truly God awful Fool's Gold with her How to Lose a Guy co-star Matthe McConaughey. If you haven't seen Fool's Gold, please don't. Just take the prosecution's word for it: the movie makes How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days look like Sleepless in f*cking Seattle.

Her most recent films have been more of the same (A Little Bit of Heaven, Something Borrowed) and the prosecution doesn't see an end to these movies in sight unless you the jury find Miss Hudson guilty. Please help us stop the madness.

Kate Hudson

The Defense: Desert Blue, Almost Famous, About Adam, Four Feathers, The Skeleton Key, Nine, The Killer Inside Me

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, the defense believes the prosecution is looking too closely at Miss Hudson's romantic comedies and ignoring the films that don't involve a shirtless McConaughey. The defense feels that while Miss Hudson has appeared in a few bad rom-coms, many actresses become the "it" girl for that genre and it goes in cycles. Meg Ryan, Jennifer Lopez, Katherine Heigl and Sandra Bullock have all done work in the genre (both good and bad) and it's (unfortunately) all part of the Hollywood system for attractive actresses. But Kate Hudson is on trial, not the system, and even though some of those movies she has appeared in were crap the defense feels that she was perfectly serviceable in those films.

Clearly these movies are her bread and butter but it's not like she exclusively does romantic comedies. One of her earlier films is the very underrated offbeat comedy Desert Blue and the defense feels that she did just fine in Four Feathers and The Skeleton Key. Nine wasn't a great film but Miss Hudson was very impressive in it and few actresses would have taken on the role she took for The Killer Inside Me, which is pretty much an anti-romantic comedy unless you happen to be a functioning sociopath.

And does the prosecution really want to throw the woman who played Penny Lane into Movie Jail? One of the defense's favorite female movie characters of all time? This is just outrageous and the defense feels that her work in Almost Famous combined with some of her more recent offerings is proof that Miss Hudson has a wider range than she gets credit for.

IN CLOSING...

Has Kate Hudson used up all the goodwill she earned playing Penny Lane and should she go to Movie Jail due to her consistently appearing in bad romantic comedies? Or is there more to her as an actress than playing the lead female interest in a romantic film? There's only one way to find out and it's with your vote: GUILTY or NOT GUILTY?

SHARE YOUR VERDICT BELOW IN THE STRIKE BACK!

*The cases for and against a defendant going to Movie Jail by the author are not necessarily his views and opinions but they are some of the beliefs that one would use to effectively make an argument for both sides. Not quite a devil's advocate but you get the point. Anyways, this is all in fun so don't take it too seriously. We have a separate jail for those people called "Troll Tower" and believe me you do NOT want to go there.

WHAT SAY YOU, GUILTY OR NOT?

Kate Hudson

LAST WEEK'S VERDICT

Paul Walker

After looking over the evidence from last week, the jury has found Paul Walker NOT GUILTY of all charges. It was a close vote but one movie alone appeared to save Mr. Walker from Movie Jail: 2006's Running Scared. Some of the jury compared Mr. Walker to Keanu Reeves and argued that there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. The jury also felt that Mr. Walker's work outside of films and in general being a pretty swell guy was enough to keep him out of jail...for now.

PREVIOUS VERDICTS

GUILTY Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy, Vince Vaughn, Tim Burton, The Farrelly Brothers, Michael Bay, Jessica Alba, Ice Cube, Gerard Butler, Halle Berry, Marlon Wayans, Julia Roberts, M. Night Shyamalan , Katherine Heigl , Cuba Gooding, Jr. , Tyler Perry, Cameron Diaz

NOT GUILTY Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Nic Cage, John Travolta, Oliver Stone, Ben Stiller, Jim Carrey, Wes Craven, Matthew McConaughey, Robert Rodriguez, Kristen Stewart, Roland Emmerich, Kevin Costner, Sandra Bullock, Hilary Swank, Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves, Kevin Smith, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson, Anna Faris, Robin Williams, Charlize Theron, Ray Liotta, Jason Statham, Paul Walker

Sure, she's hot. You can't get past the fact that she's a one trick pony. Until she avoids the rom - com genre it seems they are all she can do. This may be her agent's fault but, if so, she's not telling them otherwise. Guilty!

She is hot though & I have never seen Almost Famous, which seems to be her only good movie according to others on here. It's never good when you go the romcom route, at least for an actress.

You really should see Almost Famous (not because of Kate Hudson though) but make sure it's the director's cut.

It kills me because I love Almost Famous and she's utterly wonderful in it. But I'm not sure I've liked a single one of her movies since then, including the ones listed in the defense above. Such a waste of talent.

She's WORSE than Katherine Heigl. Heigl never leaves her comfort zone by always playing the same character; Hudson never leaves her comfort zone by always playing herself, which is lazy.

I thought about not convicting her, but there's always a "but":
-She was OK in SOMETHING BORROWED, but the film overall is bad. She should've known when reading the script.
-She was OK in NINE, but the film overall was one of my worst of '09. She should've known when reading the script.
-She was GOOD in

-She was OK in NINE, but the film overall was one of my worst of '09. She should've known when reading the script.
-She was GOOD in the 2nd half of A LITTLE BIT OF HEAVEN (she finally got out of her comfort zone!), but not in the 1st half (she played herself as usual), and the film overall was one of my worst last year (partly because the rest of the cast sucked).
-She was OK in GLEE, but her character and story-arc were underwritten. OK, this one wasn't her fault.

I know there are a lot of bad rom-com actresses, but she starred in (and produced) BRIDE WARS, which was the worst kind of chick flick: a sexist chick flick. It made my "Worst of the year" list, and so did MY BEST FRIEND'S GIRL.

The only positive thing is that YOU, ME AND "DUPREE" wasn't THAT bad. OK, I'm being unfair. Like I said before, she's not incapable of a good performance. And she knows how to create a presence on-screen. But 13 years later, that's not enough.

I honestly think "Movie Jail" should be based on what the actors are doing recently, not their entire back catalog of work. I think we should be looking at the past 10 movies someone has made for an accurate representation of if they deserve movie jail. Just because someone made a classic 30 years ago does not make them immune from making shitty movies. Can you imagine if that was how real jail worked? "Oh, O.J's not guilty because he used to be a NFL superstar and had endorsement deals, and

That being said Kate Hudson hasn't had a good movie since Almost Famous in 2000 so she is definitely guilty. NEXT WEEK: the Farrelly Brothers or a re-trial for someone like Robin Williams, under the above rules

Hudson Goes to Jail

Kate Hudson should be locked up in Movie Jail....The Crappy Rom-Coms have sunk her career like huge lead shoes in the ocean. While it may be true that actresses now a days well have their fair share of Rom-Coms in their resume...Kate Hudson should know enough to get herself out the bad movie drought. Heck take a cue from her Mom and star in some good comedies.

Guilty for having the cock teasing actor career of all time.

Here is an actress who was brilliant in "Almost Famous". I loved her in that film and her performance alone said she would go on to great things. Not only did she fail to go on to great things, she hasn't even had a "great" or "good" film since "Almost Famous"! Chain her up in the dungeon and force her to watch all the shit films she has done again and again for eternity. Same goes for her agent.

And in all honesty

I'd be reeeeeeally curious to see Shane Black go up here after all of the hate he's gotten for Iron Man 3. I could seriously see it going either way. Personally I don't think his filmography is that strong, with the shining exception of Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang, and don't think he'd make it.

Yeah, I know his resume and that's exactly what I was talking about. The first two Lethal Weapon movies are big pluses, but I personally think Long Kiss Good Night is pretty bad, even though I know some people like it. Last Boy Scout does not work in his favor at all, neither does AWOL and he also wrote The Last Action Hero for crying out loud and most of his acting roles have been in really crappy movies (i.e. Robocop 3). That is a very checkered resume. Of course none of that would be enough

The real question here is whether Iron Man 3 was enough to cancel out the goodwill he established with Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang and his earlier writing projects.

Sorry to me Movie Jail isn't about hate, it's about actors who either had a once good movie career & then just fell off the chart, which is why you never see DeNiro or Pacino as guilty. Plus I liked Iron Man 3 & what they did to Mandarin didn't bother me at all. Plus Black is known for his writing not his directing.

I have quite a few, actually. But these are my top five:

1. Brendan Fraser
2. Mel Gibson
3. Rob Schneider (We all know how that one would turn out, but it'd be still fun to convict him)
4. Christian Slater
5. Kevin James

I don't even have to read the argument for this one.... Guilty! Guilty! Guilty!

What gets me is that she had so much hype surrounding her coming off of Almost Famous. Seriously she was given the perfect springboard for a totally legitimate "indie-darling" career, and then she almost immediately squandered it. Within less than 2 years she had already signed on to star in crap like "Gossip" and "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days." I love Almost Famous but I really wish Crowe would've given that role to someone who actually would've done something with their career.

The sad part is she really could be more, I think. But there's a difference between being a rom-com "it" girl and what she's doing. Kate Hudson has been past that for a few years now. She might still have some talent, but she's not really putting it to much use. And thank you for putting her on trial.

She did one decent movie 13 years ago and it's been a steady stream of crap ever since. If the defense is reduced to using Nine in their argument then Guilty is really the only possible verdict.

For next week I'd like to nominate Will Smith. It looks like he had another crapstorm debut in theaters this past week.

GUILTY!

Guilty

Only not if every girlfriend and wife was on here defending her, but they aren't. Thus, she belongs in movie jail because she's a one trick pony in her film career.

Movie death row

followed by movie electric chair, movie gas chamber, movie bullet to the head and then the movie character mr Wolf should finish up. I remember thinking she was the next best thing when I first saw Almost Famous. Boy did she prove me wrong!!!
