Movie Jail: This week's defendant is...Game of Thrones' King Joffrey!

Apr. 7, 2014by: Jesse Giroux

Movie Jail

This is Movie Jail, a unique maximum security prison that houses some of the worst writers, directors, actors and producers from Hollywood and beyond. Their crimes? The offenses vary from convict to convict but most of these inmates have contributed negatively to the film world to some capacity and his or her misdeeds have covered a long enough period of time that the authorities had to intervene. In each column a defendant is put on trial, arguments are made, and then it is up to YOU, the jury, to decide if the person is guilty or not guilty of crimes against cinema. Their lives are in your hands, dude.

The Defendant

The Case

With the new season of HBO's Game of Thrones kicking off last night, we decided to have some fun with this week's edition of Movie Jail by putting King Joffrey on trial. The prosecution can't tolerate the sniveling worm any more and believes he needs to die immediately, while the defense feels the show won't be as strong without the character, even if we do hate him. Regardless of what happens to him in the novels, we want to know what your thoughts are on King Joffrey. Obviously there will be a few spoilers, so you may want to avoid this if you haven't seen the previous seasons of Game of Thrones.

The Prosecution: Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, has there ever been a more hated character on television than King Joffrey? The dude is about as popular as James Franco at a PTA meeting, and the prosecution believes it's time we put the blonde bastard's head on a pike.

How much does the prosecution hate Joffrey? If I ran into actor Jack Gleeson on the streets, I'd probably curb stomp him while screaming, "This is for Ros!" We've had to deal with the little shit for three seasons now, and enough is enough. How many more times will we have to witness him doing something cruel or straight up evil? You never want too much of a good thing, and while King Joffrey has been the perfect villain for the show, the prosecution feels he can't continue to live for much longer. It's been a lot of "fun" watching him f*ck with the Starks and be a giant douche, but it's at a point where the prosecution (and I'm sure most people) just want to see him die already.

Plenty of characters have been killed off on Game of Thrones, but what fans really want to see is karma shoving a crossbow up King Joffrey's entitled ass. And oh, what a satisfying death it would be. The whole nation will probably come together for it, like we do during the Olympics, or after a terrorist attack. The prosecution isn't one to tell others how to do their job, but the Game of Thrones showrunners must know fans are very eager to see King Joffrey get his. If he survives the fourth season, there might be a riot.

The defense may think Game of Thrones is better with King Joffrey, but the prosecution feels we've had to deal with this vicious character for too long, and it's time for his reign of terror to come to an end.

The Defense: Ladies and gentlemen, don't you love a great villain? Someone so despicable and wicked, you just want to gouge their eyes out every time you see them? You don't have to like King Joffrey, but you should appreciate what he's done for the show, and killing him off would be a huge mistake.

King Joffrey is an immoral and fiendish prick, and because of that, he shouldn't die. Not just yet, anyway. The prosecution feels his time has come, however, the defense believes we still need him. Waiting for him to be killed has been part of the reason why we love watching the series, and killing him now would hurt, not help the show. Think about it: after he's killed, who are you going to root against? There are other less than nice characters on Game of Thrones, however none of them have been as heartless as our little king, and before he's killed, we need another really evil character to emerge.

Imagine how many more people he could hurt, how many more lives he could destroy...and how awesome it'll be to watch. If you think he's a monster now, don't you want to see what he'll be like after another season? The prosecution thinks most fans want to see him die now, but give him at least one more season and then you'll really be screaming for his blood.

King Joffrey is a nasty little shit, that's a given, but should he die within the next few episodes of the new season? It's been a blast to watch Joffrey be such a horrible person, and the defense doesn't want the character's time on the show to end just yet.

IN CLOSING...

Should King Joffrey continue to live, or should he be killed off ASAP? Do you think Game of Thrones won't be as good without the sadistic character, or do you think his death is something the show needs? Is King Joffrey GUILTY or NOT GUILTY?

COMMENT BELOW WITH YOUR VERDICT!

*The cases for and against a defendant going to Movie Jail by the author are not necessarily his views and opinions but they are some of the beliefs that one would use to effectively make an argument for both sides. Not quite a devil's advocate but you get the point. Anyways, this is all in fun so don't take it too seriously. We have a separate jail for those people called "Troll Tower" and believe me you do NOT want to go there.

WHAT SAY YOU, GUILTY OR NOT?

LAST WEEK'S VERDICT

In last week's trial, Terrence Howard was found NOT GUILTY of all charges. Some jury members believed Mr. Howard was guilty, however most said his good work outweighs the bad, and they usually don't remember his shitty films when they think of the actor. Mr. Howard is a free man, but he should probably try to find a better agent.

PREVIOUS VERDICTS

GUILTY Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy, Vince Vaughn, Tim Burton, The Farrelly Brothers, Michael Bay, Jessica Alba, Ice Cube, Gerard Butler, Halle Berry, Marlon Wayans, Julia Roberts, M. Night Shyamalan , Katherine Heigl , Cuba Gooding, Jr. , Tyler Perry, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson, Ashton Kutcher, Happy Madison Productions, Jennifer Lopez, Bruce Willis, Paul W.S. Anderson, Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker, Brett Ratner, Rob Cohen, Renee Zellweger, Shia LaBeouf, Renny Harlin, Diane Keaton, McG, Demi Moore

NOT GUILTY Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Nic Cage, John Travolta, Oliver Stone, Ben Stiller, Jim Carrey, Wes Craven, Matthew McConaughey, Robert Rodriguez, Kristen Stewart, Roland Emmerich, Kevin Costner, Sandra Bullock, Hilary Swank, Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves, Kevin Smith, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson, Anna Faris, Robin Williams, Charlize Theron, Ray Liotta, Jason Statham, Paul Walker, Will Smith, Salma Hayek, Michael Cera, Johnny Depp, Ryan Reynolds, Milla Jovovich, John Singleton, Jon Voight, Jack Black, Brian De Palma, Jerry Bruckheimer, Nicole Kidman, Justin Timberlake, Freddy Krueger (Halloween Special), Johnny Knoxville, Orlando Bloom, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dan Aykroyd, Sylvester Stallone, Gavin Hood, Jason Lee, Jennifer Garner, Carrie-Anne Moss, Kate Beckinsale, John Cusack, Chris Columbus, Clive Owen, Terrence Howard

By the way, if you're gonna keep putting characters on trial...

... at least choose MOVIE characters. This is MOVIE Jail, after all. Also, I wouldn't mind another trial for a production company.

Guilty......BUT!

The only way he should die soon is if it's by Sansa's hand. It's time she stopped being a whiny child (despite the fact that she is one on the show) and DO SOMETHING! Say give Joffrey an opening to have sex with her before Dinklage, only to tie his hands to the bed posts and slowly kill him. They could spend an entire season on the intrigue of people trying to figure out who killed the King.

Either that or he should be eaten by a dragon.

Haven't read past book 2 yet...

But this Jack Gleeson kid is an absolute dynamo on this show. I hate Joffrey with a passion, but some day they're gonna kill this character off and GoT will lose just a liiiiiitle bit of steam. I almost want Jamie to kill him immediately after revealing the truth about his real father and then SLICE with that Valerian steel sword, but at this point I have no idea what they'll do. Either way, this season started well and I can't wait for more!

I thought this was for an actor's shitty movies and shows

We may hate him, as a character, but he makes Game Of Thrones a better show by being the most hated person on Earth. But Movie Jail? That is for people who make entertainment not worth watching, it is just amazing that this character is so hated, you decided to break the mold of how this column works. Ha!

I think the fact that me and my mates call each other Joffrey's when insulting instead of the C word says everything about him.... but even though I want to see him die, I love seeing him on screen to hate

Not guilty, for now.

Every show needs a good villain. Sure his comeuppance will happen someday, but for right now, part of what draws you to GoT is being able to hate on Joffrey. I don't think he should be killed off until close to the show's end.

Can I use the C word?

When watching Batman Begins recently, and Gleeson appears, the first thing out of my mouth was 'Joffrey you little cunt!'
He is brilliant. An utter shit who deserves a nasty fate but a joy to watch. I say guilty but only because anything else would be a disservice.

I think Bieber is 10 times worse than Geoffrey. I mean Geoffrey is a character from a book. Bieber is a 'real' DOUCHE.

Not Guilty

I hate the guy he's one of the biggest pricks in television history but should he die absolutely not and it definitely shouldn't be a quick death. Like some of the commenters have said Game of Thrones isn't a great show with out him. I'd personally love to see Tywin put him in his place though.

I'm surprised at the number of comment makers who haven't read the books. Without giving anything away...REALLY? There aren't any other villains who could take his place? REALLY? Tywin Lannister is a giant prick, the only difference between him and Joffrey is that Tywin does his dirty deeds in secrect. Roose Bolton is another a-hole who is also to blame for the Red Wedding - without Bolton the whole thing never goes down. Those are two biggies who could easily replace Joffrey - I'll give

Those are two biggies who could easily replace Joffrey - I'll give you that Joff has been more of an outright prick, but that's the point of the character - and since when in the GoT world has there not been some meaningful line of ascension? Anyone who thinks the series can't go on once he is dead was probably saying the same thing after Ned's death and again after the Red Wedding. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Joff is a villain who has been there from the beginning, who we love to hate, but trust me - there are more coming!

Great! Unlike the FREDDY KRUEGER trial...

... now you've stated the criteria on how to judge the character Defendant, so I can vote comfortably. I vote Guilty because those characters you call "less than nice" aren't less than nice. A lot of them are worthy antagonists. Think about it: While JOFFREY ordered NED's execution, who's idea was it to have the Red Wedding?

[Spoilers for BREAKING BAD and VAMPIRE DIARIES]

You put a picture of Jesse Plemons there. When GUS FRING died, a lot of people were like "What?! How can they do

You put a picture of Jesse Plemons there. When GUS FRING died, a lot of people were like "What?! How can they do that?! Nobody will be as evil!". I'm not sure if anyone was ever as evil as GUS, but the show survived for another season. See, it's all about character development. KLAUS MIKAELSON was given his own spin-off because the writers and the audience realized there wasn't anything more to do with him in Mystic Falls. JOFFREY's attitude has basically stayed the same since he became king, and there'll be a point where it won't be fun anymore to watch him.

Next week: Dennis Dugan, Robert Luketic, Andrew Niccol, Ridley Scott, David Spade, or, Sigourney Weaver. Or maybe Ivan Reitman (to coincide with the release of his new movie).

Like said before... Movie Jail shouldn't put on trial characters. It used to be only actors/directors. Just create a new column for characters.

Regarding the trial... Joffrey shouldn't just go to jail. He needs to be bitch slapped for eternity.

Guilty: But the Character is Not the Actor

From all I've heard, Jack Gleeson's a very smart, articulate guy and he deserves to be commended for creating such a brilliant villain. I've heard Gleeson wants to give up acting after his character dies on Game of Thrones (not spoilers: you know it's coming!). If that's the case, that's a real shame, but good luck to him in the future. I'm sure he'll go far.

As for King Joffrey: Guilty!!!!

Precisely because he is the most detestable villain out there, he should stick around. The moment he gets movie jail; or "off with his head" the Game Of Thrones series is over. I would love for Joff to get his comeuppance, but i am happy to wait for it, let it build and build until Arya Stark gets her revenge. That is the ONLY thing that will satisfy me, if Arya sticks him with Needle or something.

I do worry how this role - so universally reviled - has colored people's opinion of Gleeson, and any future roles he may take. I'm a little confused that this is the first time the prosecution is talking about execution rather than imprisonment (rightly so, but still, it's called Movie Jail).

Well, of course Joffrey's guilty. I've heard a fellow schmoe say that Jack Gleeson wants to give up acting as soon as possible, and I guess it's understandable when you're playing a character this despicable for this long this early in your career - but gosh darn if he isn't awesome at it. He said he took inspiration from Joaquin Phoenix's turn as Commodus in Gladiator, which is a really clever source of inspiration. Hopefully Gleeson gets to do what he wants to do and doesn't end up like poor

Neveldine/Taylor should take the stand eventually.

GUILTY, GUILTY, GUILTY, THE GUILTIEST!!

This "king" should be raped, hanged, decapitated, poured gold on, have his hand chopped off, flayed, dick cut off, set on fire with the help of a dragon, and exploded with wildfire. But before all that, a thousand slaps from Tyrion while Sansa laughs enthusiastically.

I'm surprised to see a Character on trial this week. We should do this more often. My verdict: King Joffrey is guilty - ever since he ordered the execution of Sir Eddard Stark. Guilty!
