Movie Jail: This week's defendant is...McG!

Feb. 24, 2014by: Jesse Giroux

Movie Jail

This is Movie Jail, a unique maximum security prison that houses some of the worst writers, directors, actors and producers from Hollywood and beyond. Their crimes? The offenses vary from convict to convict but most of these inmates have contributed negatively to the film world to some capacity and his or her misdeeds have covered a long enough period of time that the authorities had to intervene. In each column a defendant is put on trial, arguments are made, and then it is up to YOU, the jury, to decide if the person is guilty or not guilty of crimes against cinema. Their lives are in your hands, dude.

The Defendant

The Case

The Prosecution: 3 Days to Kill, This Means War, Terminator Salvation, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, the prosecution has been considering director Joseph McGinty "McG" Nichol for Movie Jail for some time now, but thought we'd give him a chance to redeem himself first with his latest, 3 Days to Kill. But in its first weekend of release the action flick hasn't generated much interest at the box office, and with terrible reviews by critics, it's clear we need to send McG to the big house.

McG has only directed seven feature length films, however the prosecution believes there's more than enough evidence to convict the director since all but one of his movies has received a "fresh rating" at Rotten Tomatoes. That would be 2000's Charlie's Angels, and when a filmmaker has a movie like that as his highest rated film, you know there's a problem.

Like fellow "all action, no brain" directors Rob Cohen and Brett Ratner, McG has never let things like plot and story get in the way of a good explosion, and while that's fine for a popcorn flick like Charlie's Angels, remember what he did to the Terminator franchise with Terminator Salvation?  Visually it was great, but it wasn't the Terminator movie many expected it to be, and although it may have not been McG's fault, the PG-13 rating certainly didn't help.

McG doesn't really have a unique style of directing, unless you consider distressingly bad to be a style. The prosecution will more than likely use We Are Marshall as part of their arguement, but the movie is just a forgettable sports flick, and most of the praise from critics was for Matthew McConaughey's performance, not McG's directing. In fact, one of the biggest complaints was how McG shot the movie.

Having not one, but three solid leads couldn't save McG's This Mean War though, and once again one of the biggest complaints from critics was how the director filmed the movie. This Means War could have been a decent movie. Not spectacular, but it should have been at least an entertaining way to kill an hour and forty minutes. Instead, we're left with a rom-com action movie that isn't very passionate, funny, or thrilling.

Can we please throw McG's ass in Movie Jail before he strikes again?

The Defense: This Means War, We Are Marshall, Charlie's Angels

Ladies and gentlemen, there's absolutely nothing wrong with McG's films. Yes, critics usually don't have great things to say about his work, but there are many that enjoy his entertaining, if not spectacular, films. Not every movie has to be a complex thriller, or have an important message. Sometimes you just want to have fun at the movies, and if that's all you're looking for, McG's films definitely deliver.

Charlie's Angels is a ridiculous and cheesy movie, and so is its sequel, but they are also very entertaining. The same can also be said for This Means War. People who dislike my client will probably say that credit should go to the cast and not McG, and anything negative about these films is entirely the director's fault.

But is that really fair? Take for example Terminator Salvation. McG didn't write the screenplay or come up with the story, yet fans like to blame him for the movie's failures. It's also not the worst film ever, but if you ask a Terminator fan, they'll be quick to bring up all its flaws. If this was just a forgettable sci-fi movie with no ties to a preexisting franchise, people wouldn't be so harsh to my client. But fanboys just can't let go of how my client "tainted" the Terminator series. We give actors a pass when they've been miscast in a film, why can't we do the same for a director who probably wasn't the right person for the job?

Although not film related, my client has also done some excellent work in television as a producer. He helped bring Supernatural to the small screen, as well as Nikita, Human Target, and Chuck. Like most of his films, McG's shows are a lot of fun, but because they're not "smart" or "cool" people like to bash them, and my client.

McG makes inoffensive, entertaining films that help you escape reality for a couple of hours. If you're expecting something more from my client's movies, that's a you problem. McG isn't going to change what and how he directs, and why should he? It works for him, so let's continue to let my client do what he does best: make fun movies.

IN CLOSING...

Is the sample size too small, or has McG done enough to be sent to Movie Jail? Are the director's films just forgettable, yet entertaining movies, or has he committed real crimes against cinema? How much should he be blamed for Terminator Salvation? I ask you, the jury, is director McG GUILTY or NOT GUILTY?

COMMENT BELOW WITH YOUR VERDICT!

*The cases for and against a defendant going to Movie Jail by the author are not necessarily his views and opinions but they are some of the beliefs that one would use to effectively make an argument for both sides. Not quite a devil's advocate but you get the point. Anyways, this is all in fun so don't take it too seriously. We have a separate jail for those people called "Troll Tower" and believe me you do NOT want to go there.

WHAT SAY YOU, GUILTY OR NOT?

LAST WEEK'S VERDICT

The jury came to Kate Beckinsale's defense in last week's trial, declaring the actress NOT GUILTY of all charges. The jury didn't think too highly of her Underworld movies, but said she's done plenty of other great work, and has more range than similar actresses like Milla Jovovich. Miss Beckinsale's looks also helped her in last week's trial, and we at Movie Jail are positive she would be locked up right now if she didn't have such a wonderful body.

PREVIOUS VERDICTS

GUILTY Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy, Vince Vaughn, Tim Burton, The Farrelly Brothers, Michael Bay, Jessica Alba, Ice Cube, Gerard Butler, Halle Berry, Marlon Wayans, Julia Roberts, M. Night Shyamalan , Katherine Heigl , Cuba Gooding, Jr. , Tyler Perry, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson, Ashton Kutcher, Happy Madison Productions, Jennifer Lopez, Bruce Willis, Paul W.S. Anderson, Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker, Brett Ratner, Rob Cohen, Renee Zellweger, Shia LaBeouf, Renny Harlin, Diane Keaton

NOT GUILTY Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Nic Cage, John Travolta, Oliver Stone, Ben Stiller, Jim Carrey, Wes Craven, Matthew McConaughey, Robert Rodriguez, Kristen Stewart, Roland Emmerich, Kevin Costner, Sandra Bullock, Hilary Swank, Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves, Kevin Smith, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson, Anna Faris, Robin Williams, Charlize Theron, Ray Liotta, Jason Statham, Paul Walker, Will Smith, Salma Hayek, Michael Cera, Johnny Depp, Ryan Reynolds, Milla Jovovich, John Singleton, Jon Voight, Jack Black, Brian De Palma, Jerry Bruckheimer, Nicole Kidman, Justin Timberlake, Freddy Krueger (Halloween Special), Johnny Knoxville, Orlando Bloom, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dan Aykroyd, Sylvester Stallone, Gavin Hood, Jason Lee, Jennifer Garner, Carrie-Anne Moss, Kate Beckinsale

Never seen a McG movie that I have honestly liked. I'm surprised the dude still does work. He's guilty for filling in spots that could be taken up by more talented filmmakers.

I will go guilty with one caveat

I dont care what anyone says I think Terminator was really great and was misinterpreted by others or was let down by the history and lack of Arnold. I think the movie fits in perfectly to the other 3 and told the story that bridges how Kyle became a badass leader and how he learned to be humble at the same time and I would have loved to see what the next 2 movies would have been and could give a shit about the reboot.

You call me a dork and believe Terminator 4 to be 'really great' - mate you really need to get out more. What plot points could we pull apart perhaps for a big start the character of Marcus, the lameness of Barnes ?? the pointlessness of Star ? This was a movie trying too much to homage i.e., G&R tribute, Linda Hamilton tapes and CGI Arnie instead of like most movies focusing on a good story line

Never really liked a film of his. Bale seems like an actor who gives 110% in each role, except for Terminator Salvation and I blame McG for that. I kinda liked the OC back in the day (I know, sue me), which I think he produced, but everything else has been average at best.

I was going to say guilty because he's never made a great movie, ussualy guilty votes are for people who have fallen from grace or have a level of fame that isn't justified by their body of work, since MCG is neither of those 2 things I'll join the minority and say not guilty.

He's like a not as bad version of Brett Ratner.

Terrible director, terrible films. 7 films as well, is this dude lazy as well as shit behind the camera ? T4 sucked absolute balls and is like everything in Hollywood now, Robocop PG13 not R-Rated - look at how much better Dredd was than T4 and Robocop. Might not have done well at the box office but that shouldn't be where films are judged - lets face it Alice In Wonderland sucked ass and is like the 5th highest grossing ever !! As for Terminator T4 should have gone back to basics and explored

As for Terminator T4 should have gone back to basics and explored the time travel elements as were rumoured with Robert Patrick being cast as a scientist captured and working for the machines. T4 just completed a poor run of films after T3 - I will only watch T1 & 2 now - I'm hoping X-Men DOFP will eradicate all the shit from X3 and we get the same with Terminator Genesis.

Studios make PG-13 remakes and sequels of R-rated movies specifically to raise more money. Like you said, box office results don't equal quality, but unfortunately, they'll keep making movies like that as long as they perform well and as long as movies like DREDD flop.

Everything wrong with McG's Terminator

A PG-13 Terminator? Fuck that. You don't take a hard action series like Terminator and tone it down. Everything from the corny homage to Guns n Roses, the fake Arnold, the chick from fight club being a villian, the terrible plot idea for Sam Worthingtons character, the bad casting of Anton Yelchin for Kyle Reese (nothing against Anton, I like him, but don't pick srawny wimpy looking actors for tough guy parts, just like Nick Stahl for John Connor in T3). The dumb love story between Moon and Sam

The dumb love story between Moon and Sam Worthington. The whole movie felt like a huge let down. The same feeling I got watching Die Hard 4. Change it from R to PG-13, way to over the top action, bad boring new characters (Kevin Smith as the wizard hacker? Really? In fucking Die Hard? ) Terrible movie from start to finsih.

Super Guilty

While no, he doesn't write the scripts for his bad movies, the only one with anything interesting in the way of visual/ directing flair is "Terminator: Salvation", which isn't nearly enough to save him.

I voted "Not Guilty" on Rob Cohen because, despite the stupidity of his films, I feel like he does bring a sense of fun and such to the proceedings. McG doesn't do that in my opinion, and as such, I am typically very bored by his terrible, terrible editing and camerawork.

THE ""CHARLIE"'S ANGELS" MOVIES DID WORK, BUT...

... as semi-parodies of the show. They were very tongue-in-cheek (the first one, at least). And then McG ruined it by trying to go for serious action movies with the mentality that they can ALL be mindless fun. So, he's Guilty.

Even if I compare him to action movie directors only, he's terrible. There were so many wrong things with THIS MEANS WAR, and the directing was one of them. The actors looked completely lost because he didn't know what to tell them. The action sequences were nothing

Even if I compare him to action movie directors only, he's terrible. There were so many wrong things with THIS MEANS WAR, and the directing was one of them. The actors looked completely lost because he didn't know what to tell them. The action sequences were nothing out of this world, and the way the scenes were edited was so disjointed. And as a typical Hollywood movie, everything was so calculated. Why else would Reese Witherspoon's character be wearing gym clothes when she bumps into her ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend, even though during the rest of the movie she dresses like a model? Actually, the second that scene is over, we see her like coming out of a photo shoot, because she's with her best friend.

"If this was just a forgettable sci-fi movie with no ties to a preexisting franchise, people wouldn't be so harsh to my client". If a movie is part of a franchise, it has to be compared to the other installments. That being said, I thought SALVATION was average and forgettable even as a TERMINATOR movie. "We give actors a pass when they've been miscast in a film, why can't we do the same for a director who probably wasn't the right person for the job?". Since we do we forgive miscasting?

He only directed the pilot episode of CHUCK, and the show eventually became deeper. McG was an exec. producer, but if that's something that counts here, you should also add the terrible STOLEN to the Prosecution.

I haven't seen 3 DAYS TO KILL yet, but I had a feeling it would get bad reviews. Even the tagline in the poster was dated!

If your defense is This Means War and Charlies Angels, you probably know you were going to jail to begin with. And claiming that he directed it so he shouldn't be penalized for plot holes? He's the director! He picks the scripts he wants to work on and needs to blend them with the cast, writer and crew to bring the most out of it. He fails to do that on a regular basis. If he doesn't take credit for that, he isn't needed.

Also, don't try to sneak in under McT's awesomeness by going with

Not guilty, I enjoyed Termintir Salvation, it was better than Rise of the Machines. 3 Days to Kill wasn't as bad as y'all made it to be. This Means War could've been better, but that was the screenplays fault there.

I'm surprised he hasn't been convicted before now. The man may have the best of intentions, but I think his inability to deliver on that is a sign that maybe the skill isn't there.

Terminator Salvation was good. Heads and shoulders above Rise of The Machines! I don't care what anyone says - T4 was good and deserved a sequel. Okay haters - I've said my piece - hate on!

Used to defend the guy simply because I love the calculated high energy of Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (I know, I know) but apart from that personal exception the man is King Midas' idiot brother.

But I'm one of the few people who don't mind TS.

Lets get someone good up here for trial. George Romero, or Dario Argento someone who was once brilliant but is now just a box of farts

Romero has barely made movies in recent years. Argento, on the other hand, has made a bunch. And most of them have gotten bad reviews and box office results.

I'm torn on declaring him without a doubt guilty because of Chuck. I enjoyed Terminator Salvation to a point, but it was still missing something that made James Cameron's movies special. I say send him back to the small screen.

Guilty with time served

This guy is pretty much radioactive now so I doubt he can screw up much more. Can we get him back on the small screen to at least wrap up Fastlane? I really miss Tiffani Amber Thiessen.

The guy has had several potentially action packed movies that could have done well, but didn't and received the bad reviews to show it. Thought the pacing and some edited scenes in Salvation were done terribly as well. BUT, the writers for Terminator 3 and Salvation are just as guilty as he is.

Terminator Salvation gets railed on more than it should. Far from perfect, but it was entertaining. Though I am a sucker for a post apocalypse. This Means War was a lot of fun as well. The man is no artisan, but he is definitely serviceable, and that's more than most people can say for how they are at their jobs.

Here's the thing: I don't hate him. I don't think he's made himself as unlikeable as Brett Ratner has but I fully understand why they're often mentioned in the same breath. The Charlie's Angels movies are silly but then again, they are intended as such, and they're not going to have a wealth of substance no matter who the director is (I would love to see David Lynch direct a Charlie's Angels movies though). And I actually really like Terminator Salvation. It depicted a grim, violent (even if PG-13) future war, and I think the tone was apt and it looked like it should have. For me at least, it was certainly better than T3. 3 Days to Kill was really something of a mess though. Not checked out This Means War but it looks bad. Guilty, but not the most detestable director to be put on the stand.

I actually liked Salvation at parts (it's much better than the parody that was Terminator 3). Were it not for the rather horrible editing and the completely unnecessary character of Marcus this could have been a great Terminator movie with an excellently cast John Connor,

But other than that I just don't see any other good films on his resume. I haven't seen We are Marshall but all the rest are rather bad or forgettable and bland. I just don't care for him at all.

GUILTY.... but...

as a good movie goer ( i.e. I like almost everything I watch), I cannot follow this guy, I cannot be interested buy his work :
- charlie's angels was horrible (I understand why Bill Murray wasn't returning)
- Terminator Salvation was disapointing, not bad, just disapointing. (and so a letdown comparated to the highly underrated Terminator 3...)
- We are Marshall : very good, I have to admit, even for a european soccer fan
- This Means War : entertaining but, immediatly seen, immediatly

- Have Not seen yet 3 days to kill but looks like a poor's man " taken "

So, I would say guity, but as someone said, maybe, with a good script....

I'll never forgive the man for ruining what should have been an awesome 4th entry of the terminator series. So much potential for a post apocalyptic film but it was wasted.

How can I condemn a man who brought the Charlie's Angels movies to the world? Soooooo much eye candy.

"Charlie's Angels" is fun, "We Are Marshall" is a good movie and he did a good job directing "Terminator Salvation". Same as Brett Ratner : competent director who needs a good script.

Guilty. I hate This Means War. The movie has so much potential but poorly executed. But I do like Terminator Salvation though.
