Movie Jail: This week's defendant is...Mel Gibson!

08.25.2014

Movie Jail

This is Movie Jail, a unique maximum security prison that houses some of the worst writers, directors, actors and producers from Hollywood and beyond. Their crimes? The offenses vary from convict to convict but most of these inmates have contributed negatively to the film world to some capacity and his or her misdeeds have covered a long enough period of time that the authorities had to intervene. In each column a defendant is put on trial, arguments are made, and then it is up to YOU, the jury, to decide if the person is guilty or not guilty of crimes against cinema. Their lives are in your hands, dude.

The Defendant

The Case

The Prosecution: The Expendables 3, Machete Kills, The Beaver, Edge of Darkness, We Were Soldiers, The Million Dollar Hotel, Forever Young, Air America, Bird on a Wire, Mrs. Soffel

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, last week one of you said a trial for Mel Gibson would be interesting, and while the prosecution agrees, we also believe there's enough evidence to convince the jury we need to send the filmmaker to Movie Jail.

This trial isn't about the comments Mr. Gibson made to police when he was arrested for driving under the influence in 2006 or the alleged recording of a phone call with his ex-girlfriend, however it would be ridiculous not to bring them up since they've obviously had a negative impact on his career. The prosecution's problem with Mr. Gibson are his films since those unfortunate incidents, and although they are clearly the reasons why he hasn't appeared in the greatest films as of late, we still think he could be working on better movies.

Edge of Darkness just felt like more of the same from Mr. Gibson, and him playing a villain in The Expendables 3 and Machete Kills sounded fantastic on paper, but both movies (and his performances in them) weren't anything to write home about. Even with his controversies, Mr. Gibson should still be able to find solid projects since he's been kicking around Hollywood for so long, and is close friends with a bunch of other famous actors. It did help him land a role in The Beaver, but even though he's actually really good in the Jodie Foster movie, the film itself is pretty weak. As to him directing again, if studios aren't that comfortable with him starring in a film, it's unlikely they would want him behind the camera for one either.

The prosecution would love to see Mr. Gibson make a comeback, but it's not going to happen with the films he's been appearing in recently, and we doubt he's going to be directing a new movie anytime soon. We believe spending some time in Movie Jail will help Mr. Gibson, and keep him away from bad projects that might further damage his career.

The Defense: Get the Gringo, The Beaver, Edge of Darkness, Apocalypto, The Passion of the Christ, The Singing Detective, Signs, What Women Want, Chicken Run, The Patriot, Payback, Conspiracy Theory, Lethal Weapon series, Ransom, Braveheart, Maverick, The Man Without a Face, Hamlet, Tequila Sunrise, Mad Max movies, The Bounty, The River, The Year of Living Dangerously, Gallipoli

Ladies and gentlemen, we aren't going to try to defend the things Mr. Gibson has said and done in his personal life, but the defense is a fan of his movies, and we believe he's still doing great work. Are Machete Kills and The Expendables 3 amazing movies? No, but in the defense's opinion Mr. Gibson was quite good in both films, and he did a solid job in Edge of Darkness as well. But if you really want proof Mr. Gibson is still an incredibly talented actor, check out his Get the Gringo and The Beaver, two very different movies featuring outstanding performances from my client.

In 2011 at the 25th American Cinematheque Awards, Robert Downey Jr. asked Hollywood to forgive my client, and the defense believes what Mr. Gibson needs is an Iron Man. It obviously doesn't have to be a superhero movie, but we think a hit movie with Mr. Gibson as the lead would do wonders for his career, especially if it was also well-received by critics.

Although many people might not think too highly of Mr. Gibson because of his controversies, movie buffs (and more than likely most members of the jury) still love his older films, and the defense doesn't think they'll want to lock up my client. This isn't the same as say Shia LaBeouf's trial, since Mr. Gibson's filmography is much more impressive. Besides his acting, my client has directed two excellent films with Braveheart and Apocalypto, and the defense strongly believes in his skills as a director. Many critics didn't love his The Passion of the Christ, but the defense still enjoyed the film, and that's coming from an atheist, so it's not as if we're just a big fan of Mr. Jesus.

Mr. Gibson's films haven't been marvelous these past few years, and it's his own fault many are no longer fans of the actor, but the defense still doesn't think he deserves to go to Movie Jail.

IN CLOSING...

Do you believe Mr. Gibson should spend (at least) a few months behind bars, or do you think we should let him walk? Do you think he can turn things around, or is this it for "Mad Mel"? Is Mel Gibson GUILTY or NOT GUILTY?

COMMENT BELOW WITH YOUR VERDICT!

*The cases for and against a defendant going to Movie Jail by the author are not necessarily his views and opinions but they are some of the beliefs that one would use to effectively make an argument for both sides. Not quite a devil's advocate but you get the point. Anyways, this is all in fun so don't take it too seriously. We have a separate jail for those people called "Troll Tower" and believe me you do NOT want to go there.

WHAT SAY YOU, GUILTY OR NOT?

LAST WEEK'S VERDICT

Very few jury members defended director and screenwriter Mark Steven Johnson in last week's trial, and he's been found GUILTY of all charges. Many took issue with how he handled the Ghost Rider and Daredevil movies, and were also unimpressed with his other films. Mr. Johnson will be spending the next five years in Movie Jail, and as part of his punishment can't be involved with any comic book movies for at least a decade.

Not Guilty

The man made the Mad Max trilogy for Christ's sake. He's made so many decent to good movies I can't even count them, is not a bad director, and I disagree with a few of your picks for the Prosecution.

WTF? Nearly every movie listed on the prosecution list were decent movies. This is without a doubt the silliest Movie Jail yet.

I would really like to see Mel Gibson make a come back. He's a very charismatic actor who can pull off anything. I go to the movies to see guys like himself.

Mel is one of the greatest actors and directors in screen history. Braveheart is a modern classic and The Road Warrior and Lethal Weapon were game-changers in the action genre. He's been fantastic in all his films, and his Get the Gringo was one of the best action films of the decade.

WTF were you thinking?

Gibson is so not guilty it's hilarious. Yes, some of the movies he's appeared in since his personal issues got him ousted of the Hollywood A-list haven't been amazing, he's never failed to impress. "The Beaver" was good, and it works almost entirely thanks to his amazing intense performance. He has never disappointed, even if the movie has.

Nope

I've always been able to separate the work of people like Mel Gibson from their personal lives so with that said, on the whole, the good outweighs the bad (shit I would have been prepared to give him a pass on the Mad Max films alone). Also one of the films listed under the Prosecution, "We were Warriors", wasn't bad, though it would have worked much better had they removed all of that home front stuff and just concentrated on the battle.

OK, I realize this column has to take everyone through the ringer in order to stay relevant. But this one feels like something to mark time with until next week. Gibson has a huge fan-base on this site (I know not everyone's forgiven him), and he's slowly trying to rebuild his credibility. The fact none of his directorial efforts wound up in the prosecution's bracket, and outside of Expendables and Machete (which aren't meant to be good movies) you lack solidly bad recent movies. Anyone who's

THE EXPENDABLES 3 and MACHETE KILLS are tongue-in-cheek, but that doesn't mean they aren't meant to be good. They're bad compared to their previous installments.

No way! Not guilty. Mel is still a great actor and filmmaker. He's still our favorite crazy buddy to have.

Sure, Mel Gibson has ran his mouth more than once. Even though he said some disturbing things, and allowed his beliefs to come across as a highly strict "Jesus freak". Mel has had one too many great successes both in front of and behind the camera. To me Apocalypto was his greatest test for filmmaking abilities. Shadowing in the success of The Passion Of The Christ as well as his religious controversy, I expected Apocalypto to be Gibson's downfall as a director. It wasn't. It was a spectacular

It was a spectacular achieve for Gibson. What was even more impressive was that despite the film's graphic violence and a lack of top name cast members, the film was a blockbuster success because of Gibson's name.
Mel still has it, and would love to see him direct and star in something new. Seeing a Mel Gibson movie is like checking in with an old buddy to see how he's doing. In my opinion, Mel is doing just fine.

Honestly is this even a question the guy is a phenomenal actor and director. Compared to most of Hollywood his supposed "controversy" really isn't even that bad. Most have done and got away with much worse, yet they get a free pass. I would love for him to get back in the game I think he has a few great movies left in him.

Where were you guys when THE BEAVER came out?

It could've used more ticket sales. Now, the movie itself was pretty weak but I honestly felt Mel deserved an Oscar for it. It's very had to take such a ridiculous concept and make it poignant. That and the fact that he makes Hollywood movies in foreign languages is very impressive. THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST failed as a religious movie because it represented the stereotype that faith is all about making people feel guilty. But I still find it to be a well-made production. And it had a distinctive style, unlike it most movies about Jesus that feel like they could've been made by anyone (I'm looking at you, SON OF GOD).

CHICKEN RUN is one of my favorite animated movies, BRAVEHEART and SIGNS are great, WHAT WOMEN WANT is decent, the LETHAL WEAPON saga is hit-or-miss, POCAHONTAS and THE PATRIOT are average, and I hate the MAD MAX trilogy. But Mel was good in almost all of them. I also enjoyed his guest appearances on THE "SIMPSONS" and COMPLETE "SAVAGES".

He's Not Guilty. And this is coming from someone who has Jewish relatives.

Get this noise out of here

THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!!

THE ONLY REASONS HIS ROLLS HAVE DEPLETED IS CAUSE HOLLYWOOD TURNED ON HIM!!

In hollywood you can rape someone, kill someone, assault, stab, and be convicted for many things and be forgiven..

But Mel.. for some reason can not be for making his racial comments (at a time when he was so depressed he tried to kill himself)?

Too many great flicks, Lethal Weapon, The Beaver, Braveheart, Mad Max, etc. He was great in Machete Kills and Expendables 3. He seems to be working through all his shit and I'm glad people are paying attention to him for his work once again. And also, can we once and for all work out which color means what when it comes to movie jail voting?

The guy is great actor. He has proven time and time again that he is different than a typical action star. I love watching Gibson. Really about the only movies of his that I have not cared for are Machete Kills, Expendables 3, and Tequila Sunrise. Which is a shame I didn't care for either of his movies where plays the villain because I have always thought he had it in him to be a truly great villain in a film. Although of course I did not think he was the problem in Machete or Expendables. I

I think he'd make a kick ass villain in a Bond movie, he still looks like he could go toe to toe with Daniel Craig physically. He may have troubled personal life but the guy is pure gold when he is in front of the camera (or behind for that matter). Get the Gringo is proof that he is way more than capable of commanding the screen.

Arguably already in movie jail

But for once, it's someone who deserves to be there. The scandals he got caught in are an issue whether we like it or not. I'll never blame anyone for developing a substance abuse problem - it can happen to anyone - but Gibson got caught in pretty much every type of scandal (racism, antisemitism, homophobia, violence) and that's just not defensible.

Still, even without those problems, he would be in a tough spot. He's at the age where he can no longer be a lead and he doesn't seem able to

I'll never blame anyone for developing a substance abuse problem - it can happen to anyone - but Gibson got caught in pretty much every type of scandal (racism, antisemitism, homophobia, violence) and that's just not defensible.

Still, even without those problems, he would be in a tough spot. He's at the age where he can no longer be a lead and he doesn't seem able to re-invent himself as a support player. Actors like Harrison Ford and Robert DeNiro can go through a though stretch and come back because they're movie icons. Actors like Mel Gibson and Kevin Costner came close but never quite reached that status so when they're done, they're done.

Not Guilty!!

The past few years of Gibson's career is as close to him being in exile as I've ever seen. However, there's no denying his huge talent. While, personally, I would vote not guilty on the basis of Maverick alone, but add that to Payback, Conspiracy Theory, and dozens more, and you should have a totally clean movie-jail rap sheet.

Not guilty.

My feeling is Mad Mel has already been in Movie Jail for a few years since his meltdown.
Maybe he has served his time and is ready to be resurrected? He is getting on in years and is a shadow of what he once was. I still think he can make entertaining films. The Beaver I think was a favor from his friend Jodie.

Not Guilty

Nothing the prosecution could have said would have lead me to a guilty verdict. Using Forever Young against him is possibly the poorest argument anyone has ever used on here

The man is a legend. Lethal Weapon alone gives him a pass for life in my opinion.

NOT EVEN CLOSE TO GUILTY

Mel Gibson is one of Hollywood's greatest talents in front and behind the camera. Not guilty! You know you rock when Edge of Darkness, We Were Soldiers, Forever Young and Air America are considered to be some of your worse films (loved them all personally). PS: I always had a soft spot for Bird on a Wire... don't tell anyone! :)

Not Guilty.

Mel has done some amazing films over his career, and he has done a few phone-in rolls as well, but his acting and directing is above many other of his contemporaries today.
If this column was based on personal issues, then I would say "guilty asshole", but with his personal stuff aside, I say for his acting, Not Guilty.

If the spirit of Movie Jail is to judge the defendant purely on their work and not their personal life or beliefs, I don't see a reason to find Gibson guilty. Really he's still in the process of trying to pull himself back out of the hole he dug, so that can at least partially explain the downturn in his output. It's not going to be easy for him whatever he does, though, as some people will never agree to work with him or give him a chance, and that's their right.

Not Guility

A formidable talent both in front of and behind the camera who has made lots of mistakes in real life but has quite a strong body of work. And I like Air America, it's an interesting take on the buddy formula with an intriguing historical backdrop to it. The chemistry between him and RDJ was fun.

Sorry Mel Gibson but you have become irrelevant. You were once a fun actor to watch but as of late you have lost your touch.

He may be crazy in his own life, but he's a legend in film.

You lost your case when you included Forever Young and Air America in your Prosecution list. Not Guilty!

Not guilty. He managed to make even Expendables 3 slightly captivating. The man is an icon.

Of course he's not guilty. Even though he hasn't been in Great movies lately he's been the best thing in them and made such great movies in the past.

I couldn't give two shits about what Mel has said in the past. The man is an icon of cinema. We all say dumb shit in our lives. It's such a shame that Hollywood has completely shut him out.
