Movie Jail: This week's defendant is...Robert De Niro!

Jul. 30, 2012by:

Welcome to Movie Jail, a facility like any other, only its inmates are Hollywood writers, directors, actors and producers. This column will serve as a Movie Jail trial. We will put one defendant on trial; lay out arguments for the Prosecution and Defense. And we leave it up to YOU, the reader, to decide whether the defendant is guilty of his or her crime. What crime? The crime of consistently being a stinking shithouse.

The Defendant

Robert De Niro

The Case

The Prosecution: New Year's Eve, Analyze That, Showtime, The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle, Godsend, Meet the Fockers, Little Fockers, Righteous Kill.*

Ladies and gentleman of the jury, it is not so easy for the prosecution to bring Mr. Robert De Niro to trial. But due to Mr. De Niro's selection of movies over the past couple of years, the prosecution feels the need to step in before things get worse. We understand that Mr. De Niro is worthy of knighthood at this point and sure, the man has created some great performances but is that enough to absolve him from starring in a bunch of shit heaps recently? A look at his Rotten Tomatoes page shows the man has contributed to 26 movies in the past 10 years and only 7 of those movies have a fresh rating. That's.....a percentange.....that is not good. Look, the prosecution doesn't handle math problems, only Movie Jail cases.

The Defense: Everything from 1973 to 1998.*

Ladies and Gentleman of the jury, are you fucking kidding me? According to Movie Jail Warden, Jim Law, Mr. De Niro has created the single greatest performance ever committed to film. Oh, you don't like that one? Talk to my friend Travis Bickle, and once he's done shooting you in the face (and you survive....just go with it), maybe you'd like to talk to this guy , this guy, this guy or this fucking guy. Aww, whassamattawitchyou? Too much of a tough guy? Too one note for the jury? How about if Bobby De Niro (we get to call him Bobby) does a 180 on dat ass and gives you some serious performances like Leonard Lowe in Awakenings, or the hilariousRupert fucking Pupkin in The King of Comedy. It's absurd for the court to hear the reasons why Mr. De Niro should be found Not Guilty, and frankly, it's embarrassing as well. No I don't have pants on. Whatever. The defense rests.

IN CLOSING...

So, whats to be done with Mr. Robert De Niro? It is an undeniable fact that Mr. De Niro has created some of the most memorable performance in the history of "moving pictures", but does that make up for the lackluster decade and a half? And the most important question to be asked, once all evidence is taken into consideration, we ask you The Jury, is Robert De Niro GUILTY or NOT GUILTY? Lets hear YOUR arguments, either side, by STRIKING BACK BELOW.

*The court recognizes that all movies are subjective, so relax.

WHAT SAY YOU, GUILTY OR NOT?

LAST WEEK'S VERDICT

It is the jury's decision that after reviewing last week's evidence, the court finds Mr. Eddie Murphy GUILTY of charges against the movie going community. Due to the possibility of Mr. Murphy shelling out a solid R rated movie, he is sentenced to at least 10 years or to be given at least 3 movies to free him from Movie Jail. In the event Mr. Murphy shits down our throats again upon his release, the court will have no choice but to give him a life sentence without parole. This court will not fall for the banana in the tailpipe again.

No fucking way.

Put his career on the scale and watch the good far outweigh the bad. I understand the need to watch him closely lest he Fock again but for the time being let the guy age and work close to home or wherever he feels like it. He's earned it. If Nick Nolte and Gary Busey can get away with making crazy a career move he can get away with being lazy at work for a decade. Maybe he'll pull it together. Killer Elite was a step in the right direction IMO.

ON PROBATION

I was one of the people who recommended DeNiro be brought up on charges, but it was meant as a warning. De Niro is one of the greatest actors of our time, but he's spent too much time as of late reading his lines off the back of his paycheck. With Being Flynn it seems like he's actually ACTING again, so I'm hoping he'll turn it all around for the latter part of his career.

You should be ashamed of yourself to even bring such a legend to the stand. He could create another 10 years of New Year's Eve like mega-pictures and he should still be free to walk the streets with a slight strut.

Not guilty and the prosecution should be charged with perjury.

Let the man pay his bills with sub-par productions. He's given us far too many masterpieces to be put on trial.

For shame.

The good films out number the bad. When you get to De Niro's age, good parts are hard to come by, so you can't blame just him for his recent output (though Being Flynn was a great performance). The same can be true of Pacino or Nicholson. There's not too many good leading roles for older guys, or they get stuck playing the same type of character we've seen them play before.

While I agree that the likes of "Godsend" and the "Fockers" sequels are ungodly terrible, he should be considered not guilty, based on his rather more recent work, that I was surprised to not see mentioned- "Limitless", where he was clearly relishing playing a (somewhat) villainous part and "Being Flynn", where he proved why he is such a legend (if you haven't seen "Being Flynn", I highly recommend it; it's incredible!)

Not guilty. He did enough good cinema for us to enjoy. He can collect a paycheck until he dies for all I care.

Tidbit: Bruce Willis. I can't name a memorable role since Sin City. And almost half his movies since then have been DTV or a movie where he does a self parody of himself. And the others consist of Cop Out and Surrogates. ugh

He has potential with movies like "The Silver Lining Playbook" to redeem himself. But past glory cannot compensate for his making a mockery of himself. People still look to De Niro as one of the greats, but it's becoming harder and harder to agree with that statement. I say give the man a chance, but if he hasn't learned from his mistakes, he's gonna wind up right back here.

The Joe Paterno of Movies

The dude has squandered his legacy, in my opinion. Between Righteous Kill, his other projects with 50 Cent, etc. it's tarnished forever. Now, he still does good work- I liked him a lot in 'Red Lights' and he was fine in the maudlin 'Being Flynn' but the amount of D-grade crap he does is unfathomable. I just don't get it.

While he certainly deserves to stand trial for the downward turn his films have taken, overall I'd say his decline hasn't been extreme as, say, Eddie Murphy's. And he still shows up in decent films from time to time. I'd say Not Guilty. After all, no one gets it right 100% of the time.

Not guilty by reason of legacy

"And y'know what? Robert DeNiro is sittin' right here, and he's the shit!"

Let DeNiro pay the bills and take good roles when they come along ("The Irishman," maybe?).

Yeah he's made some terrible movies lately, but in Hollywood if you live long enough, you're bound to make some stinkers. His track record prior to the bad movies of late is basically unmatched, I think. He's arguably the greatest actor of all time! Nah, I say not guilty.

He has been in some of the most unforgettable movies and he has played some of the most unforgettable roles but that does not give him the right to now phone in performances and do shit movie after shit movie.
Somebody earlier brought up Nicholson and Pacino. I think all three of these actors were great but now all of them seem to play caricatures of themselves.
I don't think any of them are too far gone, they just need to mix it up. Do something completely out of left field. They need to

For "Robert deniro is a bit over-rated.he is great but not greater than Al Pacino" read: CLICHE.

Can we not form an argument beyond this? And as for impersonators being able to riff on his character? Really? No-one ever satirises Pacino and Nicholson?
