Movie Jail: This week's defendant is...Sienna Miller!

03.16.2015

Movie Jail Banner

This is Movie Jail, a unique maximum security prison that houses some of the worst writers, directors, actors and producers from Hollywood and beyond. Their crimes? The offenses vary from convict to convict but most of these inmates have contributed negatively to the film world to some capacity* and his or her misdeeds have covered a long enough period of time that the authorities had to intervene. In each column a defendant is put on trial, arguments are made, and then it is up to YOU, the jury, to decide if the person is guilty or not guilty of crimes against cinema. Their lives are in your hands, dude.

The Defendant

Sienna Miller

The Case

The Prosecution: Unfinished Business, Two Jacks, A Case of You, Just Like a Woman, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, Casanova, Alfie

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, Sienna Miller may have starred in two Oscar-nominated films last year (American Sniper and Foxcatcher), but overall the prosecution hasn't been impressed with most of her performances, and she has appeared in more than a few poorly reviewed movies.

While Miss Miller has had a few strong turns in films like Factory Girl and Interview, the prosecution has never considered her to be a well-rounded actress. Miss Miller can only do so much with what is given to her, and we believe this is further proof that she just isn't a strong thespian. It's not as if Miss Miller has really been straight-up awful in her movies, but we believe she's always been at best a serviceable actress.

Many of Miss Miller's movies also haven't done much at the box office, with Unfinished Business being her most recent financial (and critical) bomb. The actress is easy on the eyes, however the prosecution thinks she'll look even better behind bars and far away from the big screen.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Sienna Miller

The Defense: American Sniper, Foxcatcher, The Edge of Love, Stardust, Interview, Factory Girl, Layer Cake

Ladies and gentlemen, I don't know where the prosecution is coming up with this "she's not a strong actress" bollocks. Miss Miller received high praise for her portrayal of Edie Sedgwick in Factory Girl, as well as for her roles in Interview and The Edge of Love.

Miss Miller was great in both American Sniper and Foxcatcher, but her performances were overshadowed by her male co-stars. The defense isn't trying to say she should have been nominated for a bunch of awards, however it's not like her acting brought down those movies either, which is exactly what would have happened with a lesser actress.

My client has appeared in several smaller films that didn't do well with critics or at the box office (Two Jacks, Just Like a Woman) but almost every actress has at least a couple of black marks on their filmography. Miss Miller isn't as weak of an actress as the prosecution is trying to claim, and the defense is confident that the jury will agree she doesn't belong in Movie Jail.

American Sniper Sienna Miller

IN CLOSING...

Is this is a long time coming for Miss Miller, or do you believe she doesn't deserve to go to the slammer? Do we need to lock her up, or do you have faith in her abilities as an actress? Is Sienna Miller GUILTY or NOT GUILTY?

*The cases for and against a defendant going to Movie Jail by the author are not necessarily his views and opinions but they are some of the beliefs that one would use to effectively make an argument for both sides. Not quite a devil's advocate but you get the point. Anyway, this is all in fun so don't take it too seriously. We have a separate jail for those people called "Troll Tower" and believe me you do NOT want to go there.

WHAT SAY YOU, GUILTY OR NOT?

Sienna Miller

LAST WEEK'S VERDICT

Garry Marshall

The results are in from last week's trial, and Pretty Woman and New Year's Eve director Garry Marshall has been found GUILTY of all charges. While jury members said they've enjoyed his TV projects, they also said they have been disappointed with many of his films (especially his most recent efforts) and that he lacks style as a director. The jury doesn't seem to have a problem with romantic comedies, but they definitely have an issue with the ones helmed by Mr. Marshall.

Not guilty. I can't judge her as a bad actress in bad movies, only that she hasn't been given any juicy roles. Let's see her get a big role where the film depends upon her. If she fails and the film bombs then movie jail. If it does well then her career takes off.

When you are a minor actress playing supporting roles in minor films you can't really be faulted.

I've actually only seen her in GI Joe, but I am surprised how young she still is, hard to judge just by one movie I have seen, she is gorgeous though.

Not guilty

Yes, she's mostly forgettable, but she was good as the Baroness, even though her backstory kinda sucked, which isn't her fault. Overall, GI Joe was pretty entertaining and she was a big part of it.

I just don't care one way or another. I'm here to give a few suggestions for future weeks, since it seems this column is running out of ideas: Todd Phillips, David S. Goyer, Brendan Fraser, Adrian Brody, Kristen Wiig, etc.

The funny thing is, here this woman was in two movies that got a lot of critical acclaim and Oscar nominations just last year. She's in one Vince Vaughn moron comedy and now it's time to try her for her crimes against movies?

Hey, I'm not saying Sienna Miller hasn't made bad movies. She has. I'm just saying NOW you wanna try her? And while I haven't actually sat down and watched the whole G.I. Joe movie, she is what I think of when I think of that film, ad I mean that as a compliment.

People are giving her a pass? Because she's not famous enough? The Wachowskis gave us The Matrix and Cuba Gooding Jr actually won and Oscar and both are in movie jail (which I'm in no way arguing). But this shrill arrogant nonentity of an actress is free to go??? Unbelievable

not guilty...

...due to lack of stardom.

I thought this column was for "stars" and falling stars. She, while hot, is a supporting actress at least, window dressing at best. I will still watch the travesty that is GI Joe just for her in the Baroness costume.

Sienna Miller is famous but not that famous and while I'm sure she made enough money to have a very comfortable living, she probably never was in position to have a better career than the one she had.

Not Guilty!

I have to say..that was a pretty weak argument on the prosecution's part. Being in two Oscar nominated movies last year doesn't grant you immunity maybe.. but it sure helps your defense! Also, judge if you want, but GI Joe should not be a case for prosecution...slight guilty pleasure of mine in general and I found her really fun in her role!

Not even close to guilty

It can be argued that she actually spent 2008-2012 in movie jail and is now working her way back. The thing about Miller is she was famous for all the wrong reasons. Her relationship with Jude Law (back when he was a megastar - a very short window) made her fodder for the tabloids, and she took a lot of heat for Factory Girl and GI Joe - neither of which were her fault. I think Foxcatcher and Sniper are two big steps back into the limelight, and she's going to have a huge year, with her

I think Foxcatcher and Sniper are two big steps back into the limelight, and she's going to have a huge year, with her co-starring (again) with Cooper in his Chef movie. She's also got Black Mass, Lost City of Z and High Rise coming up, as well as Affleck's Live By Night. She's also kicking ass on-stage in Cabaret. Not guilty by a long shot.

Career average: 4.8/10.

I don't think she's been given enough chances. She barely did anything in FOXCATCHER. I felt she deserve more award recognition for THE GIRL. I also felt she was as good as her co-stars in AMERICAN SNIPER and EDGE OF LOVE, which is why the former isn't bad and the latter is bad but not the worse. I hated G.I. JOE but not because of her. She's Not Guilty.

Your career average argument is about as valid as Rotten Tomatoes grades, name any actor who has had a perfect career?

eh...

She is nothing incredible but I will say she did well in the two films from last year, "Foxcatcher" and "American Sniper", as a wife who goes through hell. She was extremely bland in "Unfinished Business" but that wasn't her fault. That movie was just a failed opportunity all around

She has an average track record. Lately she seems to have been solid in some higher acclaimed films, but at the same time when she was filming something in Pittsburgh she was a complete pain in the ass. Acting like she was entitled and everyone should bow down to her when out in public. These people don't play that sorta thing and even the loca media was tearing into her for her "diva-like" behavior. This has always been a town where Michael Keaton would still be seen at church with his Mom and

Ms. Miller could take some lessons in etiquette from him...so acting wise I'll pass her, but barely...F+

Her film career is simply not good enough at ANY level to be brought to court like this. She is as average as they come. Its not like she did something GREAT and has done something to usurp it. Shes been average the whole way through. For this reason I ask this case to be DISMISSED!!!!

Just about every movie I've seen her in, I've forgotten she's in it and wondered throughout who that annoying actress is. Only to keep finding out it's her. During American Sniper I thought it would be funny if the annoying wife was Miller only to be right! Terrible actress! Plus, she somehow thought/implied that she was the best in world while promoting Factory Girl. Still haven't seen because she came off so arrogant. Kindly send her away!

I actually like Sienna and she can be pretty good given a chance. She may not be an A-lister but she usually fills whatever role she's given quite well.

She's not a particularly good actress but she serves her purpose, she fills roles. The roles that better actresses probably turn down because there's not enough on paper to work with. The type that are usually just there to stir the plot and the attention usually is on other people. Her two movies this year were acclaimed because of the other people in them not her. I don't think there will ever be a time when I will ever say "holy shit, I have to see this Sienna Miller's in it." She's just

Anything I have ever seen her in she has not given a memorable performance, bad or good. So I guess she is safe for now until she starts doing straight to DVD or kid movie fluff.
