Movie Jail: This week's defendants is...Jim Carrey!

Oct. 1, 2012by: Johnny Moreno

Welcome to Movie Jail, a facility like any other, only its inmates are Hollywood writers, directors, actors and producers. This column will serve as a Movie Jail trial. We will put one defendant on trial; lay out arguments for the Prosecution and Defense. And we leave it up to YOU, the reader, to decide whether the defendant is guilty of his or her crime. What crime? The crime of consistently being a stinking shithouse.

The Defendant

Jim Carrey

The Case

The Prosecution: Fun With Dick & Jane, Mr. Popper's Penguins, Batman Forever, A Christmas Carol, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Majestic*

Ladies and gentleman of the jury, it may seem that we are railroading comedic actors by putting guys like Adam Sandler and Eddie Murphy on trial, but when the prosecution bears witness to these type of actors playing it safe, no longer pushing the comedic envelope, the prosecution has to step in. Like Eddie Murphy, what happened to Mr. Carrey? He started off creating some crazy characters for IN LIVING COLOR, and catapulted his career into the comedy stratosphere with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Dumb and Dumber. And then what happened? We don't begrudgeg Mr. Carrey for his dramatic turns in the fantastic The Truman Show, but we DO begrudge him for dipping into that kiddie pool of Mr. Popper's Penquin and the Dr. Suess nonsense one time too many. That, in the prosecution's charge, is what he's guilty of. We don't mind his dramatic work, but even then, they are too far in between and don't make as big of a splash as The Truman Show once did. A quick stint in Movie jail with Sandler and Murphy, and that should be enough to steer Mr. Carrey onto the road to redemption.

The Defense: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb & Dumber, Liar Liar, The Truman Show, The Cable Guy, I Love You Phillip Morris, Man on the Moon, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind*

Ladies and Gentleman of the jury, the defense feels that this is a way different case than the prosecution will have us believe. For one thing, Mr. Carrey has taken way more risks with his career in terms of his dramatic choices than Sandler and Murphy. You don't go from a $20 Million pay day to taking risks like The Truman Show, Man on the Moon or The Majestic. Both Truman and Moon are successful because of Mr. Carrey's performance. There isn't a guarantee that any one of those decisions would have a favorable outcome. Case in point, The Majestic, which has its fans, but bombed both critically and disastrously at the box office. Did that stop Mr. Carrey from taking chances? Absolutely not. When's the last time Sandler or Murphy took chances the way Carrey has? As for his foray into kids' movies, a man gotta eat! And we argue that those flicks are better than anything Murphy has done in years. Plus, we're all waiting for the next Jim Carrey comedy that'll bring him back to his former glory. Let's face it, he's got a better shot at it than anybody.

IN CLOSING...

So, what’s to be done with Mr. Jim Carrey? Is it a lost cause to expect another great Jim Carrey comedy? Or has he comfortably become Hollywood's Utility Star, seamlessly going from comedy to drama and back? Should he, as the prosecution suggests, be thrown in Movie Jail "Scared Straight" style so that he gets back to making better movies? And the most important question to be asked, once all evidence is taken into consideration, we ask you The Jury, is Jim Carrey GUILTY or NOT GUILTY? Let’s hear YOUR arguments, either side, by STRIKING BACK BELOW.

*The court recognizes that all movies are subjective, so relax.

WHAT SAY YOU, GUILTY OR NOT?

LAST WEEK'S VERDICT

It is the jury's decision that after reviewing last week's evidence, the court finds Ben Stiller NOT GUILTY of all charges. The jury believes that Mr. Stiller's output has been more positive than negative, and the fact that he puts on acting/writing/directing/producing hats, lends credibility to his career as a Hollywood renaissance man. Now where's ZOOLANDER 2?

Not in the slightest. Carrey has made some duds, but he deserves credit for mixing his successful comedies with some really daring and interesting choices (Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine, etc.). An extremely talented guy, I think.

Jim Carrey's schtick is not for everyone, but he puts his all into every project, he never mails it in. Whether he is playing to the kids or to adults he is a rare talent that uses a physical schtick and depth of character. A guy has to work, and you can't blame him if he's getting poor material to work with. The man can do comedy AND serious stuff. Most actors can't. Compare the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Truman to Dumb and Dumber of The Grinch. Carrey is an iconic actor.

You can't count Batman Forever. Not only was he the best thing about that movie, but He was genuinely fun to watch.

NOT GUILTY!

First off, how is Lemony Snicket's being held against him? That movie was great! Arguably the funniest thing he's done in a while.

There are two Jim Carrey's in my mind. The comedian, who is struggling, and the actor, who needs to be seen more of. Having said all that, unlike Murphy and Sandler, Jim Carrey isn't some mega producer of shit. Every new Jim Carrey movie (Poppers and the Bruce Almighty sequel aside) has the potential to be his next big comeback vehicle. And with Burt Wonderstone

Every new Jim Carrey movie (Poppers and the Bruce Almighty sequel aside) has the potential to be his next big comeback vehicle. And with Burt Wonderstone and Kick Ass: Balls to the Wall on the way, we've got two more reason to be hopeful. He still knows how to entertain, even when he's in sub-par material (he was the best thing about that Grinch movie).

If anything, he's been suffering not so much from poor movies as he has from being absent. He doesn't have the output a lot of his peers do. I think it's because, minus a few paycheck movies, he actually might care about making something actually good. Or at least trying to make something good.

A lot of the movies in prosecution of Jim Carey seem to be kids movies that just didn't have that other level that some kids movies have to appeal to adults as well. I don't really think Carey should be held accountable for that. Not Guilty.

Damn! Aside from two dissenting opinions, it's freakin unanimous in here. I'm kind of surprised actually. My own - albeit limited - impression was that most people have been taking Carrey less seriously lately, due to his acting choices. Clearly I'm mistaken! It's good to be in like company. Although I should caution those who go so far as to say this is "obvious". There are valid concerns being made. That said:

NOT GUILTY.

This is Jim-Freaking-Carrey. He's established enough cache with me that he'd have to strangle a puppy on live TV to lose my love.

Sidenote: The Majestic was actually pretty good. I accidentally watched the whole thing when it was on cable one time, and that's with commercials, so the movie was like four hours long.

Second Sidenote: He's still my quirky choice for Roland the Gunslinger, in about ten years.

He was great in Batman Forever, A Christmas Carol was actually really good and underrated, How the Grinch Stole Christmas is great, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events was surprisingly solid and he was great in it, The Majestic was pretty good with a good performance from him and Fun with Dick and Jane was actually decent too.

So I don't know Mr. Popper's Penguins is the only one really, but I've never seen it so can't make a judgement on it (it didn't look good, but since I

Absolutely NOT GUILTY. Carrey's great films not only far exceed his bad but he has spanned out both good and bad over the years as well. He didn't just drop off one year and continue to put out swill. He has tried many different things in his career. Some have worked, some have not. This is also why Vaughn is guilty and Adam Sandler is guilty and Jim Carrey is not. BTW, say what you will about Batman Forever as an overall film but Jim Carrey was GOLD in that movie

He doesn't have as much shit as a lot of other people. I do agree that some of his latest films have missed the mark but I don't think it's too late for him. Hopefully we'll dumber and dumber to will bring him back to form.
Then maybe after that he can another indie or dramatic piece.

He's had an interesting career since the days of ILC and stand-up. To this day Fire Marshall Bill is awesome. That old character aside, he's done more good than bad. Truman Show is still a fav movie for me. Great story, great performances, great movie. Grinch that stole Xmas, I personally loved it. To be honest, you can hate the movie ALL you want, but Jim's Grinch was very well done. Not only that but what wasn't mentioned was that he is taking another new risk into the super-hero

Whomever called him to the stand is a complete moron, Jim Carrey has been in some of the best comedies in the 90s alone & nobody can ham it up better than he can. I even liked him in The Grinch, Cable Guy & as the Riddler. Sure once the 2000s came he hit a lil bump but thats not his fault or a reason to hate, ya see kids it's called being ambitious. Plus movies like Eternal Sunshine & Truman Show is proof that the guy can truly act. Hopefully Kick Ass 2 will be a comeback for him even though he

Throw this out of court. The Prosecution's case is thin at best. You'd have as much chance convicting Spielberg or James Cameron.

Not guilty. The man is still a great actor. Bad movies aside, what he has produced in the past has often been great, in both the dramatic and comedic area. For a look at how talented he really is, look no further than Spotless Mind. And the guy was just cast in Kick Ass 2, so you can't throw him in jail right now.

Seriously, prosecution? Mr. Popper's Penguins? I heard that that one wasn't too bad. Also, there are lots of people (like me) who liked The Grinch. Sure, it wasn't as good as the original animated short film, but it was still very nicely done, unlike that Mike Myers abomination, The Cat in the Hat. And... A Christmas Carol? Really?? A CHRISTMAS CAROL??? How could you have hated that??? Jim did multiple voice acting parts, and the movie is incredibly good! Sure, Jim's done some stinkers,

Carrey is a fantastic comedian, one of the best there is. He's done too much fantastic stuff over the years. I hold him to near and dear to my heart to throw him in the JoBlo movie jail. The fact that he's willing to take risks and not just bounce from one big payday to another shows that he's a solid actor. Oh and by the way, I LOVE The Grinch. I don't care what anyone says. That movie was fucking hilarious.

Not Guilty. In my opinion, Carrey was very good in The Majestic. At least he was trying to break the typical comedic roles he's usually in. He handled drama well. As for Mr. Popper's Penguin, it's a kid movie. You can't expect him to go full-on Jim Carrey. At least he tried the Slow-Motion Walk at the movie climax. I think he did his best given the material. Batman Forever? Carrey was in his top form and his take on The Riddler served well with Schumacher's new take (then) of Batman movie. So

Jim Carrey is awesome. Yeah so he did a couple of kids movies and some flops in between, but in no way are Series Of Unfortunate Events, Grinch, and The Majestic enough to throw this guy in any kind of jail. And hey, Batman Forever sucked donkeysacks, but The Riddler was one of its FEW redeeming qualities. He was actually the only thing fun about that shitfest. So no, not guilty!

I like Majestic and The Grinch, and even his "bad movies" arnt all that bad, just not good.

And he's got 3 movies in the next few years that all look to be good. "Burt Wonderstone" "Kick Ass 2" and "Dumb and Dumber to". I like Majestic and The Grinch, and even his "bad movies" arnt all that bad, just not good.

And he's got 3 movies in the next few years that all look to be good. "Burt Wonderstone" "Kick Ass 2" and "Dumb and Dumber to". Not Guilty. He killed it in the Truman Show, that was such an incredible performance to behold. As great as the script and concept were, the film would not have worked if you didn't like, feel for and root for Truman - and Carrey made sure we all did.

Definitely not guilty, if only because this case gets thrown out due to inadmissible evidence. 'The Majestic' is a great film, and I thought 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' was damn good, as well.

This is the most unanimous Movie Jail I have ever seen

I would say NOT guilty. With the exception of The Grinch and Mr. Poppers Penguins the rest of the movies he's being "accused of" by the Prosecution are not good examples and are at least saved by his performances (for instance, he's the only good thing about Lemony Snicket and Batman Forever). The Defense should have also brought up The Mask and Me, Myself & Irene. I guess Bruce Almighty and The Number 23 were so awful that neither side decided to admit that they exist? Good move! Here's a

Here's a thought, this column may also be better served by bringing up upcoming films of the Defendant, cause Mr. Carrey's choice to be in Kick-Ass 2 was a really good one and should be enough for him to beat "the rap".

Sure, Jim's done some stinkers, but he doesn't deserve to get fed to the hyenas. He's shown he's got talent for both comedy and drama, and I can't wait to see him in Kick-Ass 2. Not guilty on all counts!

Both Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine are some of my favorite movies of all-time and the amount of hilarious comedies that he did in the mid 90's makes up for anything he has done in the 2000's.

Not guilty

I say not guilty because he has some promising things coming up with Kick Ass 2 (which should be another different role for him) and hopefully a return to comedies that are actually funny with Dumb and Dumber 2 (I'm not totally confident on that one with how shitty the Farrelly Bro movies have been lately, but we'll see). Also, even his misses haven't been nearly as painful as the things guys like Sandler and Murphy are doing now.

Absolutely not, Jim still has it. Even his dramatic roles are incredible, I mean Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a fantastic film! I'm sure we will get a solid comedy from Jim after his performance in Kick Ass 2.

Definitly has had quite a few misses. but if Ben Stiller gets a pass then i don't see how Carrey could be guilty :)

His rubberface technique pretty much makes him a top candidate to do kid movies to entertain the youth. Yes, those kids movies are going to be crappy to adults, but theyre made for kids so what do you expect. His adult movies are great sans a few misses. Note: Please add Number 23 to the prosecution. That movie was putrid!

Not Guilty.....Kick Ass 2

I can still watch Ace ventura and The Mask and still get a crack out of them. it really sucks he never did a Mask 2 because that would've been one of the best sequels ever. I also loved him in Liar, Liar, Bruce Almighty, and Me Myself and Irene. Also, i'm looking forward to seeing what he does in Kick Ass 2...This could be the movie that brings the crazy Carrey we all grew up on

What?

Is this a serious question? The man has very few HORRIBLE films on his resume. Not all of them are gems, but with a career this long, that's pretty much guaranteed. As the defense said, he doesn't produce the same crap again and again like Sandler or Murphy and has always been willing to take chances.

P.S. I don't know why it double-posted.

Not guilty.

Jim Carrey has made some not-so-good movies before but none of his films are really atrociously bad. Plus he's done a lot of fine dramatic work in films like THE TRUMAN SHOW and ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND so I respect him a lot for that.

When Nature Calls, Batman Forever (for him alone as hands down the best riddler) and The Grinch should all be on The Defense...that's ridiculous.

While Carrey has done crap like "Mr. Popper's Penguins" recently, his role in "I Love You Phillip Morris" & "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind" proved he still has it, and is trying. Hell, his performance in "The Number 23" was fantastic, despite the rest of that movie.

NOT GUILTY

No question for me on this one. Let's be honest with ourselves here, as a comedic actor, when he is on- there are very few better. When he is off- he is still usually the best thing about whatever the film is, and with the exception of The Number 23 and Mr. Popper's Penguins, I genuinely enjoy all of his flicks. Even Fun With Dick & Jane..which I hope doesn't render my opinion invalid. Also, (minus 23) I think he is a hell of a dramatic actor with Eternal Sunshine, Truman Show, and Man on the

Just saying- dude is no Sandler, Murphy, Myers, or even Black when it comes to hitting that brick wall of shit.

Reading this article made me realize how much I do love Jim Carrey. The problem with him is that he doesn't have as much output as he used to so when he does have something coming out we get our hopes up and it's hard to meet those expectations. I think Dumb & Dumber 2 and Kick-Ass 2 might help him get back into some good box office. He gives his all with every movie and I look forward to his upcoming slate of films :)

I must confess I have not seen everything he's done. I did see the Majestic and I think Carrey pulls off drama but, hell I don't know. He has shit tastes in projects. I think the last decent thing he did was Liar, Liar?

I have to say NOT GUILTY even though I'm not really a fan any longer after meeting him. Was a 20-yr fan until I got shunned by him at the premiere of Mr. Popper's Penguins. Didn't know it's an insult to tell someone how much their films affected their lives. Cannot deny his great films though.

I loved Jim because of his spontaneity but nowadays that shtick has worn thin. His last good comedic performance IMO was Me, Myself & Irene and its been auto-pilot performances since then.

Regarding his dramatic roles (oh, pleeze!) he's just using the Truman template again and again; Humble nice guy learning more about his relationship with the world and life around him (most notably Majestic & Number 23) with MoTM being the exception.

He's an anti-vax campaigner with blood on his hands (over a thousand vaccine-preventable American deaths in the past 5 years alone).

And even if he wasn't a terrible excuse for a human being, the overwhelming majority of his films suck.
