Mrs. Mandel's bio's book cover

While it may be pretty much assumed that Morgan Freeman is an Oscar-nomination lock for playing Nelson Mandela in Clint Eastwood's upcoming INVICTUS, can the same be said of whomever would play his controversial wife Winnie? What if she was played by someone who nabbed an Oscar on her very first film role?

South African director Darrell J Roodt will be handling a feature film based Mrs. Mandela's biography "Winnie Mandela: A Life" by Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob, which I almost entirely never considered reading.

Already signed on for the top role is one former American Idol rejectee and later Oscar winner, Jennifer Hudson. AND she'll be singing the theme song, so maybe TWO more Oscars in her near future. Somewhere in America tonight, an agent is having himself a new one torn by Whitney Huston...

According to Variety, the South African and Canadian co-producers (yeah, I know, wtf do Canadians have to do with Mandela...) promise to tell the lady's whole story, good parts and bad ones alike. Who here knows about Winnie Mandela enough to say if Hudson's a good casting choice or not?

Extra Tidbit: Here's another question - since I haven't seen DREAMGIRLS for pure lack of interest: did she deserve an Oscar for that?

I guess, as the resident South African, that I should comment on this.
What do I think?

Well, Darrell Roodt's a decent director (I've only seen YESTERDAY, but I hear good things about his other work).

As for a film about Winnie Mandela starring Jennifer Hudson?

Why don't they just hand out sticks at the entrance to all the cinemas so we can stab ourselves in the eyes BEFORE sitting through the movie?

That's all I got.

If They Cast JH All Hope Is Lost
Jennifer Hudson was god-freaking awful in "Dreamgirls", but most of that movie sucked anyways, so it was hard to notice (notable exception- Eddie Murphy). She also almost single-handedly made me dislike the otherwise solid "Secret Life Of Bees", and she can't sing worth a damned.

wtf do americans have to do with Mandela? Or Leonidas? Or Shakespear? come on tony. really?

FYI - hudson wasnt an american idol "rejectee"... she was a finalist.

She was probably chosen for the role because of her resemblance to Winnie (unlike whitney houston), she has an oscar and is a household name. Did you need us to tell you that?

And Hudson was all anyone was talking about when dreamgirls came out... she blew murphy, fox and beyonce off the screen... so why would you question if she deserved it? because it's a musical?

your disdain for every element of this article (hudson, the book it based on,the movie) is enough to tell me they got the wrong guy to write this article.

Dude, she was fucking terrible in "Dreamgirls" and everyone was talking about her because they are all retarded.

Oh my dear god! Tony didn't see a shitty musical that was way over-hyped, he must be a terrible person.

Get off your high horse, jackass.

This film probably will gloss over the horrors this woman approved of and ordered against her own race in South Africa years back. Talk about a case for state execution...
