Mysterious 1st trailer for Cloverfield "blood relative" 10 Cloverfield Lane

01.15.2016

10 Cloverfield Lane Dan Trachtenberg John Goodman Mary Elizabeth Winstead John Gallagher Jr. Banner

Back in 2014, we learned that Dan Trachtenberg (who created that awesome Portal short Portal: No Escape) will be make his feature film director debut with a post-apocalyptic thriller titled VALENCIA starring John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr. The first trailer has been released for the upcoming J.J. Abrams-produced movie, which is now going by the name of 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE, and yes, it does have some sort of connection to Matt Reeves' CLOVERFIELD.

"Something's coming..."

You may have caught the 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE trailer if you went to an east coast screening of Michael Bay's 13 HOURS last night, and after one of their readers reached out to them about it, Collider contacted Paramount Pictures, who provided a statement to the site from Abrams.

The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.

Here are the previously reported plot details:

The majority of the movie takes place in an underground cellar, home to a teenage girl and a caretaker. The girl woke up in the cellar after a car accident, at which point her eerie companion tells her a nuclear attack has devastated society. The girl still hopes to escape.

Based on the trailer, the story details and Abrams' comments, it seems the film won't be a direct sequel to the 2008 found footage flick, but rather a spiritual follow-up set in the CLOVERFIELD universe. What do you think of this mysterious first trailer for 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE?

10 CLOVERFIELD LANE will be in theaters on March 11, 2016.

LAzy Poster makers or connection?

Question I want to know.... Poster immediately reminded me of the excellent Super 8 Poster.... also a J.J. Abrams thing.

Could this movie be connected to SUPER 8 as well?
Or is the person making the posters lazy?

Showing in IMAX

... So surely there's some IMAX worthy scenes, probably the Cloverfield monster at the end.

Great trailer! What does this have to do with the film Cloverfield though? Maybe a different set of people trying to survive after the initial attack from the first film.

Just a theory....
What if this is a sequel, but not a sequel of sorts. Possibly they're not related, or just the guy is related to Goodman because the trailer alludes to her taking his gun, also shows her smashing a Coke bottle on his face. For weeks if not months they don't hear anything and she plans her escape and finds the landscape is littered with bullets, bomb debris and radioactive material. I also think we won't even see the Cloverfield monster, possibly its offspring running around

Down vote me if you like, but you could easily make two more sequels to this if it surrounds the devastation from the creature. Wasn't there a nuclear reactor that went down in Japan from the viral videos? A sequel showing another side story of human survival from the creatures devastation, and then possibly a sequel showing several countries uniting to finally killing it. Also the demolished oil rig in the ocean. Whatever happens, I just hope people don't get their hopes up to see the monster again and it won't even be seen at all.

Lost season 2 opener.

Someone may have already pointed this out, but I really felt this trailer had the same vibe, tone, and atmosphere of the season 2 opener of Lost, with seemingly ordinary and mundane in-door activities taking place over a cheerful song in the background, then the room shaking, the music taking on a sinister tone, and we realize that the setting is some kind of an underground shelter. It was very effective then and well done in this trailer, too.

I have no idea

WTF is going, WTF this is about, if there will be monsters. Are there monsters. If the trailer we seen will be in the movie but its cloverfield and that means we can all go back figuring out what is happening. I like when JJ does this stuff, its been a while since he has.

Great trailer great surprise but

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is fantastically underrated and I adore her but FFS JJ she's 31 let her play a grown-ass woman not a "teenage girl" as described here.

If this is a red herring.....

then no. It looks interesting, but if it doesn't involve the monster it's not worth the $10 to see at the theaters. If this is actually about the events after Cloverfield and the monster is there (maybe we even get some resolution to the story), then absolutely.

I've been waiting for this!

I never thought we would see a sequel to Cloverfield, but here we are. I'm so happy to see they've abandoned the found footage approach and are focusing on characters this time around, and the psychology behind what people will do in this situation. Can't believe this comes out in two months! Good job, JJ, with all the secrecy.

Regarding the "blood relative" comment by JJ, I think he isn't just referring to this being a sequel to Cloverfield, but perhaps we'll finally see the infamous

Great Trailer.....

The "Shrouded in mystery" aspect of the Cloverfield marketing is done brilliantly. Good for them to keep the secrets as well as they do. Also trailer was just well done regardless

This is the way movies used to be, total surprises that we didn't know much about beyond the trailer revealing the existence of said movie. The internet has ruined movie magic and it's good to see a movie slip by all of that BS.

Yet another girl-power movie to satisfy the manginas and fems

I predict all capable males in this movie will once again be either killed off or, at the very least, play second-fiddle to the- somehow survives better than anyone little white chick. It's formulaic now and is not the slightest bit realistic.
It's a tiresome trope that needs to be dealt with.

There is nothing wrong with a female being the lead in the movie. There are plenty of movies were men are the lead and mess up wildly. A woman can be a believable bad-ass if written well. Case in point...You're Next. I'm sorry that you feel women are overtaking movies. Honestly, most movies are formulaic, no matter if the lead is male or female.

Have you even seen a horror film made in last 40+ years?

There is a reason the "final girl" is trope and it has nothing to do with current gender politics. Most feminists actually despise the cliche, so look you have something in common with the people you claim to despise, but can't stop talking about.

My God, Goodman is amazing!

While I thought Cloverfield was a terrible, over-hyped mess, you throw Goodman in anything and I'll check it out. Hopefully he is in the movie for longer than 20 minuets, looks like things do not go very well for his charter early on...

HUGE fan of Cloverfield. Best part of this is the film is coming out on March 11. Holy crap that is a short wait. I was starting to think they'd never get around to a sequel, it has been 8 years. Way overdue.

The trailer looks good. The cast looks legit. But what about Beth, Rob and Lily?

It's a CLOVERFIELD prequel.
This is where it all began and the reason why the event of the other film is called the CLOVERFIELD incident !

Doubtful. The previous film had a viral marketing campaign that showed the creature came from the bottom of the ocean and within a couple of days went from oil platforms to New York. This obviously takes place on US soil. Also, if it does involve the monster, how would it go without people seeing (or hearing) it? And where would it eat?

It has to be after the events of the first film after the monster has been chased away from New York.

You had me at John Goodman

Very excited. Love the world of Cloverfield. Much like JJ's Lost, it left many many questions after it was over. The original made good use of found footage, and the sound was amazing at the theatre.. I love the idea of doing the opposite with the sequel and giving you a story that takes place in essentially one room, instead of an entire city. My question is what is outside. It's either alien monsters, nuclear fallout from bombing the aliens, or nothing at all, and its been a long long time

Love that we don't have to wait long to see it either. Kudos to the studio for keeping this under wraps so well.

This is a great surprise, I had no idea this was coming. Cloverfield will always be one of my favorite movie experiences. The hype leading up to it was great, but then when I saw it in theaters, i was literally on the edge of my seat the whole time. Felt like a rollercoaster ride. It was the best use of handheld cam footage that I have ever seen. I cant wait to find out more on this! Its too bad that Matt Reeves isn't directing again, but John Goodman is always gold!

First excellent trailer. It definitely has something to do with Cloverfield. Like the name Cloverfield is pretty prominent in the display of the title in the trailer. It's a little too on the nose, even for JJ Abrams.

If it is in fact a sequel, I think I dig what they're going for with this. The first movie (which I actually liked), was a good take on the found footage/survivors story. Opposed to the typical military assembling to fight the monster. This time it looks like they're

Different idea for a sequel, but one that could work.

Maybe this has to do with the army bombing the shit out of the Cloverfield monster, or his young. The nuclear fallout results in people living in bunkers.. my 2 cents
Whatever this is, looks very very intriguing and I really hope there's viral stuff coming out like Cloverfield had.

Wait were there ever any rumblings or rumors of a quasi sequel to Cloverfield being written or in the works? If not the act that they pulled this off and threw a curve ball like that without anyone ever knowing until this trailer is pretty fuckin amazing.

Be careful this time people!

Back in 2008 I remember people trying to dissect the trailers for "Cloverfield", trying to find some secret meaning hidden in there but they were presented with a simple monster movie. I avoided all of that and, unlike many of those people, I loved the movie. This is going to be a straight up thriller with probably the last 25 minutes being an actual movie that utilizes the IMAX format. I personally can't wait for this thing and we don't have to wait that long!
