Natalie Portman gives up on Gravity, will Sandra Bullock take over?

10.06.2010

If Angelina Jolie passes on a role, give it to Natalie Portman. If Portman passes, you give it to...Sandra Bullock.

Turns out, Portman has mulled over the offer to star in Alfonso Cuaron's GRAVITY, but is turning it down. Deadline also mentioned that she probably won't be doing PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES either. The reason she declined the project was due to scheduling conflicts.

The list of actresses being considered for the part consisted of Sandra Bullock, Naomi Watts, Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Abbie Cornish, Rebecca Hall, Olivia Wilde and Blake Lively. Bullock was the name that carried close to the same amount of weight next to Portman's.

Insiders are saying that Warner Bros. is going after Bullock for the lead now. If she wins the part, she will be playing the role of, "a space station team member who tries to find her way back to earth and her daughter after the space station she is working on is destroyed by a debris field from an exploded asteroid."

Several actresses have been vying for the role since the concept is an original one and they would get to work with Cuaron (CHILDREN OF MEN). Robert Downey Jr. has agreed to co-star, but his role would be a minor one. When an actress is chosen, she will have to hold the audience's focus for most of the film. Deadline compared the part to that of Tom Hanks' in CAST AWAY.

Would Bullock be the right choice?

No PP&Z?!

First off i think bullock would do a great job but i think portman would have nailed it. Im more upset that shes decided to pass on pride prejudice and zombies. But thats david o russells fault for being a jackass that can never make up his fucking mind.

If Wilde or Watts is in it, count me in. Bullock? No thanks. I don't dislike her, she's just not interesting to me as an actress.

Also, I'm going to be seriously bummed if Portman really isn't doing P&P&Z. That project had me really excited.

Question for the most informed among you

Doesn't Portman own the rights to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? I thought she was more to the project than just the actress.

God no, she´s not right for this.. Get someone else, ScarJo or someone else who can pull people. Wouldn´t mind Wilde or Sienna Miller

If it starred Bullock, I'd still watch it. I actually don't like any of the choices. Most of them don't look like they belong on a space station. Maybe Rebecca Hall though, she kind of looks like she could pass as an engineer.

extra tidbit: nope your not. those are two excellent movies. This SUCKS for Pride and Pred. Is it ever gonna get made?

that pic doesn't look like Portman. It looks like it could be her sister. Maybe it's the long hair that throws it off. The plot of this film sounds cool! Why is everyone passing? What's with all the Bullock hating?

worst choice

they've got a great list of candidates (Naomi Watts, Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Abbie Cornish, Rebecca Hall, Olivia Wilde and Blake Lively) and out of all of them they want to pick Bullock? That's just not right

I like Bullock for this. And there's no other project I'm aware she's attached to to capitalize on the "Academy Award Winner" title she recently earned.

And while I didn't see 28 Days, yes, I saw that other one that many cite as the Fall of the young Ben Affleck. All I remember thinking was "Isn't she a bit old for him?" And then they made The Proposal. But the latter was at least half a good movie

Lame. I really don't like Bullock all that much.

My choices are by far, are either Marion Cotillard or Carey Mulligan. I saw NEVER LET ME GO the other night and she's phenomenal in it. I hope she ends up with it.

Hey Niki, I watched those two movies too but that was long time ago. I remember Forces of Natures was quite entertaining. As for the news, it sounds heavy on both action and drama. I'm sure Bullock can pull it off.

After looking at the list you gave, the studio's natural instinct is to pick Sandra Bullock outta all those actresses? Really? Give it to one of those up and coming actresses

Well this sucks that she won't be doing this AND Pride Prejudice and Zombies because she would have totally owned both. With Jolie and Portman out, I think the next best choice would be Marion Cotillard, with Bullock and Johansson coming in second and third.
