Natalie Portman is done with the Marvel Cinematic Universe

08.17.2016

thor, chris hemsworth, jane foster, natalie portman, marvel cinematic universe

You shouldn't hold your breath for Natalie Portman to return as Jane Foster at any point moving forward in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If you do so, you'll most likely end up dead, especially in light of Portman's new revelation that she is completely done with all things Marvel as far as she knows.

Speaking with the Wall Street Journal to promote her next film A TALE OF LOVE AND DARKNESS, Portman was asked about any more Marvel involvement to which she replied, “As far as I know, I’m done. I don’t know if maybe one day they’ll ask for an ‘Avengers 7’ or whatever I have no idea. But as far as I know, I’m done.”

We already knew that Portman would not be showing up in THOR: RAGNAROK, but now we can confidently expand that to "ever again." You really never should say never, and who knows if Marvel might come calling again if they have the right story for Foster to show back up... but I'd venture to guess that character is going to be left in the dust as we move forward into future Phases, never to be heard from again.

A TALE OF LOVE AND DARKNESS opens in select theaters on August 19. THOR: RAGNAROK comes our way on November 3, 2017.

Love Natalie

Seems like Marvel's lack of direction, besides setting up the Avengers film, didn't allow for her to be more than what we saw in the first film. Once Avengers was being made, it was forget everybody else (unless we need a cameo), and just focus on these Avengers ...and Nick Fury (boring). They're just focused on their money-makers (Avengers), and not the other threads that would make their universe richer. Natalie isn't to blame for their confusion with what to do with her. But, then again,

But, then again, maybe Hemsworth's breath is really bad, so she actually wanted her love story cut out?

Having Natalie Portman playing the love interest in THOR

was like making Stephen Hawking teach Grade 5 science class. As an actress, she was ridiculously overpowered for the role, and Marvel didn't give her anything to do. I consider her the greatest Hollywood leading actress since Meryl Streep and I hope she finds roles in the future that are worthy of her considerable talents.

I seriously doubt that can or ever will happen. They're like bro's in arms.

Useless character anyway

She should've fought for her character to be more relevant, not the totally useless one she became. The only way I see her coming back is if they make her character matter somehow. Otherwise, what's the point?

Upon closer inspection of the full quote...

... she may just be assuming that the Thor franchise will be over after Ragnarok. No Marvel movie has made it past the third film - even a 4th Iron Man film now feels like a stretch - and Foster will probably have nothing to do with the Avengers. It's very possible that Thor finishes the film going back to Jane and that we still never see her again because the franchise is over.

She was fine in the first Thor movie, but was completely wasted and useless in the sequel. Now I'm sure they'll give some lame excuse as to why she's disappeared .

They already did that in the first Avengers movie so next time they will pretend she never happened.

Good. Her talents are utterly wasted on such trifle especially when she only gets such a minor and plotwise insignificant role

I don't blame her for being bitter. There really wasn't much for her to do in those films. Let's all just move on.

She's to Thor what Lois is to Superman. Or at least that's what they wanted to portray, I think.

Her character brings nothing to the movie. She deserves more than to play an intelligent damsel in distress.

She should stop with the subtle jabs at Marvel ("Avengers 7," really?) when she was the one happily accepting a paycheck. I'm glad she's out. I hope they write in that Jane was killed somehow. May as well, given Marvel gets a bunch of crap about how they never kill characters. Kill off Jane Foster and no more Portman - seems like a "two birds, one stone" situation to me.

Why even sign up if your not going to commit for the long haul

So the whole Jane Foster character and everyone else besides Prof. Selvig is pointless, making the first two Thor movies pointless because they were just about saving her butt and falling in love with her boring ass character. Same with Pepper Potts, they just have these actresses who want to do one and then be done, the second is always a chore and they usually phone it in by the third outing (if they make it that far).

If they wanted Jane Foster to be a part of the universe, they should

If they wanted Jane Foster to be a part of the universe, they should have gotten someone to sign on for as many movies as Thor himself. Then written actual plots where she isn't just a plot devise to release/find the rare hidden doohickey.

As far as she knows, she's done. But it doesn't really sound like she knows. Seems more like the studio's choice (to both write her as lame and to cut her) not hers...

I'd like to see her back, but they never gave character much to do, so this doesn't surprise me. Marvel has recast roles before, so I'm sure they can find someone else if they need to use the character again.

Bad

While Jane Foster wasn't the greatest character of the MCU, it was a relatively important character in the Thor franchise. They didn't set up her exit at all.
