Natalie Portman is "furious" after director Patty Jenkins fired from Thor 2

12.15.2011

Two weeks ago Marvel formally announced that Patty Jenkins, the director of MONSTER, would no longer be directing the upcoming sequel to THOR. Jenkins would've been the first female director of a superhero tentpole film (Lexi Alexander previously directed the lower-budgeted PUNISHER: WAR ZONE) but now that she's gone Marvel is looking at two male candidates as a replacement. And star Natalie Portman is none too happy.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Portman was strongly considering taking a few years off from acting to focus on her new baby and was not particularly enthused about returning for the THOR sequel. But she personally suggested Jenkins for the job and was "re-engaged" in the sequel once she was hired. The actress was reportedly supportive of Jenkins' vision for the film but Marvel, clearly, was not.

As the headline says, Portman was reportedly "furious" that Marvel fired Jenkins and that she had to find out about it on the internet. Portman is contractually obligated to star in the film but Marvel is working with the actress on her suggestions on how to replace Jenkins.

While I fully support Portman's vision for Jenkins and a desire to bring in an out-of-the-box candidate for a superhero sequel, I'm surprised Marvel is mollifying her. I mean, the Jane Foster character was barely interesting in the first film. Why not just cut her out of the sequel anyway? As Marvel is fond of saying, the movies are the stars.

What do you think? Should Marvel allow Portman to have some say in a director for the film? Should they move on without her?

Who cares?

No one saw Thor because of Natalie Portman. As stated, the films are the draw. Her role in Thor could have been played just as well by a million other actresses and for significantly less money.

Look at her films since Black Swan. If you include Hesher, there are four films and 3 of them were bombs. The other was Thor. She is not responsible for the film's success, so who cares how she feels about the director. She is a great actress, but utterly superfluous to that franchise.

How is it that only i see Your Highness as a great success? Some people just lack vision...(seriously though, i love it and its infinite quotability)

IT'S ALWAYS ABOUT THE SCREENPLAY, NOT ACTORS/ACTRESSES

If the script rocks, the movie will bring in the doe!!! Actors and Actresses only job should be to act, nothing more! Accept the part as you are bond by contract honorably, and be grateful that you don't need a 9 to 5!!!

I don't know...

Should they really be bringing back Portman's character anyway...I mean, to my knowledge, she is not in Avengers, so seems like a good time to cut losses.

This is becoming a habit

Marvel brings great talent than pisses them off in the sequel.

Movies may be the star but no one can deny that having actors of Portman and Hopkins reputation brought a lot of credibility to their franchise, whether they had a big part to play in it or not.

If Marvel didn't want Portman's input, or didn't agree with her choice of director, they should have told her right away. Misleading her was not cool!

Maybe the Kat Dennings character could step up into the girlfriend #2 role.

Can't say I blame her

Natalie Portman was the biggest name in that film, other than Anthony Hopkins, and she was criminally under-used. Marvel wanted her there so they could appeal to investors and people who ordinarily wouldn't give Thor a second thought.

She's not sure she wants to do a sequel, but then Marvel says, "We want you back so badly that we've let you choose the director!" Then, after she's signed on the dotted line, they pull a bait-and-switch. Not cool.

And as for those comparing Natalie

And as for those comparing Natalie Portman to Megan Fox: how many Oscars does Megan Fox have on her shelf?

But honestly now did Natalie Portman do an oscar worthy performance in thor? Her role in thor was no different than megan fox's was or of the same calibre for that matter. No way to deny that.

They didn't exactly give her a role worthy of her talents, either. Hell, the Avengers cartoon series has a stronger character for Jane Foster than Thor. Casting Natalie in that role was like casting Christopher Plummer as 2nd Spear Carrier on the Right. She got massive play in the posters and under-used in the film; if she was so easily replaced, why did they woo her back with her choice of director?

Natalie Portman has charisma and her relationship with Thor was well-played. If I were Marvel, I would rather my stars be excited and energetic, than apathetic and phoning-it-in.

Who knows, maybe Patty Jenkins genuinely was wrong for the project. Marvel has shown great instincts in director's so far. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Why exactly isn't Branaugh coming back?

She may be one of the bigger stars in the movie, but her actual role could have been handed to at least a couple dozen other actresses with the same result at the box office. She's entitled to have her opinion, but this is fucking THOR, not a movie about getting pregnant, or ballet dancing.

Yeah well I'm pissed that Hayley Atwell can't return for a CAPTAIN AMERICA sequel. And she was an amazing character and love interest.

Portman should just take a break. She brought to thor what megan fox brought to transformers. She is just as easy to replace as fox was. As for portman, she needs to spend more time with that kid. No kid should ever be without a mother at that age.

I completely agree. She was brought into the movie to be the eye candy, not for her creative input. WTF do we care what she thinks will make a good Thor sequel?

I haven't yet seen Thor. But I will say, Portman is easily the biggest star from that movie. And if she's obligated to come back I can see her wanting a little more control at least where she is involved. I think, baby aside, she's earned some time off after a couple of years of churning out movies. So if they need her, bring in someone she wants to work with, or leave her out, and make the fans happy.

Hell yes Marvel should listen to her. Sure her character didn't matter much, but she's the biggest star in the movie. By far. And she's making a "fuss" because her choice for director, and probably friend, was fired.

As long as it's another smart director

male or female, I don't care.
Iron Man, Thor and Spiderman were great because Jon Favreau, Kenneth Branagh and Sam Rami are smart people better known for dialog than action scenes. If they bring in an "action" director, they lost me.

She was a great balance for Thor and the whole love interested aspect, but I wouldn't mind or even care if that character got cut out. My major interest in the movies were the relationship between Loki and Thor.

Man forget Portman!

My apologies to Portmans fans, but she brought NOTHING to Thor! Portman is a very talented actress...but her portrayal of Jane was extremely irritating and really just pulled away from the real story. She doesn't need to be making such a fuss over playing the one note love interest.
