Nathan Fillion wants you to cool it with the Uncharted movie talk

07.26.2011

His legions of devoted fans (myself included) may be fiercely rallying for him to get the lead in the UNCHARTED movie now that David O. Russell and Mark Wahlberg have left the building, but Nathan Fillion is a bit worried that overzealousness could actually hurt his chances of landing the part.

Speaking to Screenrant at Comic-Con, he expressed his current thoughts on the film and his theoretical role in it.

"I am certainly still interested in playing Nathan Drake", the Firefly star told Screenrant at Comic-Con. "I think every actor I know wants their action-adventure hero, their Indiana Jones. That would be a good one for me, I think. What I don't want is people pressuring that poor man [director Neil Burger] and souring him on the actual idea. If we could somehow just… do you remember the movie Inception? I think that's what we need to do. We need to let him land on the idea on his own."

Fans were outraged with O. Russell didn't even know who Fillion was when confronted by fans, but conversely it's probably not the best idea to mob the new director Burger with death threats unless he casts him. If he's Googled "Uncharted movie" he's undoubtedly turned up a few dozen articles requesting Fillion, and so he's likely at least being considered.

But that said, it would still be understandable if Fillion didn't get the part. Why? Well outside of those of us that are fans of both Firefly/Castle and Uncharted, a lot of the public won't make the connection between Fillion and Drake (if they haven't played the game) or even know who he is (if they haven't seen his shows). He may seem like a lock to most of us, but he's untested for the general public, and there's going to be a decent amount of money on the line, and therefore easy to see the studio pushing for someone more people know, like say, Burger's friend Bradley Cooper.

Even if that is true, I'll still be pulling for Fillion till the end.

Extra Tidbit: We really could use a new Indiana Jones-type adventure hero for this generation, whether it's Drake or not.

Shit, if Jeremy Renner can become a huge action star at 40, then so can Nathan Fillion.

Nice

All in all, I am definitely one for Fillion being Nathan Drake.
Hell, they share the same first name, its like it was meant to be.
But after seeing Limitless, I would not be disappointed if Bradly Cooper was cast. Even if that would happen, it would be nice to see Nathan Fillion possible be Nathan Drakes opposite.
Fillion as a badly could even possibly work better, two smartasses going at it.

Wait, they're worried that the public doesn't know who Nathan is but thinks they know some goofball video game? I don't know what the hell it is but I certainly know Fillion. Maybe a studio should consider that most movie fans cringe at the words "video game adaptation."

I don't know, I think if Neil can't see how great he is for the part, perhaps it's best if Fillion stays clear of the project.

"untested for the general public"

why can't THIS be his test? I don't get it this isn't THAT coveted a role its a video game adaptation that most gamers (toolish xbox owners, sycophantic pc purists, and [link] wii owners) have no identification with... jackman got wolverine w/o any box office cred. and what's the new british superman's name again? star power is outdated; it works for movies that old people might see (comedies, dramas, dramedies)-- not video game movies.

Plus the likes of Will Smith and Tom Cruise have proven to not be the draws they used to be.

I've never seen Firefly. I haven't got though the first three episodes of Castle, but none the less I like Nathan as Drake. He may be pushing it age-wise, but he's got the charisma to pull it off. Cooper is pretty good, but he somehow always manages to come across as some sorta douche (or maybe it's just me - Sorry, BC fans). And, oh yeah; A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do!

Fillion is Perfect for this!!

Why should they need a big star if the story is great? Was Sam Worthington a big star before Avatar? Was Harrison Ford a big star before Star Wars or Raiders of the Lost Ark? Fillion has the acting and ACTION chops to pull this off and make it great, and this could definitely be the movie that launches his most deserving leading man film career.

Fillian's certainly a noble, down-to-earth guy.
Following on from Cricker's point, the best thing about Whedon now doing a Hollywood film is, if it's successful, Whedon's next collaboration with Fillion may actually be seen by one or two people. Maybe not in a lead role, but kinda the same way John Favreau puts Sam Rockwell in meaty supporting roles after he didn't quite clinch the Iron Man audition.

Fillion is literally perfect for this part. I'm not gonna go on some nerd rage if he doesn't get it, but he is most def. perfect for it.

its not that he doesnt ...

have the chops to do this part. Its his bankability. For the very same reason Joss Whedon has only now gotten a chance to make a big movie is say what yu will about theior talent, that isnt what has been holding them back, its the fact that neither has had a commercially succesful show/movie. Besides us movie geeks people would be very hard pressed to name either of them and thats bc they havent had any real bankable success. Its tough to do a $100 million dollar movie with a star almost no one

Lets not pretend like it hasnt happened before. Who was Chris Hemsworth before Thor? Daniel Radcliffe before Potter? Besides, when it comes to asking a fan who should be in a role, why should bankability be a factor instead of the person you think will do the best job?

I was also under the impression that Castle was doing well. Maybe not a Sopranos type status (i dont even know if they had high ratings but everyone talked about it), but certainly one of ABCs top earners I thought.

I agree with cerealkiller182. His example of Thor came also to mind when I read your post.

But Hemsworth had an incredibly memorable role in a huge summer blockbuster, Star Trek. Even if people didn't know Chris Hemsworth by name, they all knew "Kirk's Dad at the beginning of the new Star Trek." Fillion doesn't have that.

Wow, what a stand up guy, I'm going to push for him even harder.......no, just kidding.

I think he would do great, for sure, but I have kind of moved on from really marketing him as Drake.
