NBC picks up Constantine TV series plus new image and synopsis

05.09.2014

Agent Carter isn't the only comic book TV show getting a series order. NBC's Constantine has also been picked up, and a new image and synopsis have been released for the upcoming series as well. Matt Ryan will play the cynical occult detective in Constantine, and Lucy Griffiths, Harold Perrineau and Charles Halford will also star in the new series from David Goyer and The Mentalist showrunner Daniel Cerone. Behind the camera for the pilot will be DOG SOLDIERS and CENTURION director Neil Marshall.

Take a look:

Here's the new synopsis:

Based on the wildly popular comic book series “Hellblazer” from DC Comics, seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine (Matt Ryan, “Criminal Minds”) specializes in giving hell… hell. Armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and his wickedly naughty wit, he fights the good fight — or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he’s decided to leave his do-gooder life behind, but when demons target Liv (Lucy Griffiths, “True Blood”), the daughter of one of Constantine’s oldest friends, he’s reluctantly thrust back into the fray – and he’ll do whatever it takes to save her. Before long, it’s revealed that Liv’s “second sight” — an ability to see the worlds behind our world and predict supernatural occurrences — is a threat to a mysterious new evil that’s rising in the shadows. Now it’s not just Liv who needs protection; the angels are starting to get worried too. So, together, Constantine and Liv must use her power and his skills to travel the country, find the demons that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows… maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all.

Constantine might not end up being as close to the comics as some people would like, but it does look as if it'll be more like the source material than the Keanu Reeves movie. I still wish Constantine was on a different network, however I'm digging everything I've seen so far for NBC's new series, and definitely want to check it out. Although there's no word on when Constantine might premiere, I think there's a good chance NBC will begin airing episodes of their new show this fall.

Please don't suck

Part of me always wished Sting did a music vid as John...just for the hell of it.
But really, I have no idea how this is going to pan out (none of us do). I'm sure many familiar with the property knew they wouldn't do it justice in regards to adaptation, it is network TV after all. I just wish it ended up on cable (though you can push the card a bit more nowadays so who knows). Being a demon hunter though...see that's more accessible to the general audience, so I understand why its a focal

No hope of him bumping into Boston I'm assuming though...

I'm not familiar with the literature but that traveling the country bit, fighting demons, sounds a lot like Supernatural. Either way... it could go both ways. If it's as dark as Hannibal, then thumbs up. Oh and the movie really wasn't half bad either.

Call me crazy

But I really liked the movie a lot. Faithful or not, that whole ending was awesome. For all the money that went into it and even the action scenes it was still a relatively intimate film. It wasn't afraid to take what could have been big action and reel them back.

Those wondering if the synopsis is faithful to the source material, not really...

He does tangle with demons in the comic, but he does alot of other stuff too. He's basically one of the few men to have mastered black magic, and at times can be a bit of a bastard. He usually does the right thing, but alot of times he's got himself into whatever trouble he needs to sort out. His black magic often leads to his encountering cults and demons and other weird things, but he's not really a 'demon hunter'.
I'll still give this a go being a big fan of the comic, but this hasn't made

Flash!

No coverage or mention of Flash getting a series order Joblo? Gotham, Constantine, Agent Carter & even AoS got their headlines, yet no mention of Flash nor Arrow's excellent season this year.

Arrow has been amazing. This past week's episode was like watching a film. That's how great it was.

Please don't suck.

I've been saying that in reaction to pretty much every DC project these days.

Well, I will give it a chance. Would rather see the Justice League Dark series or movie instead. At least he looks more the part.

The Mentalist

So Bruno Heller, creator of The Mentalist, is the creator and showrunner for DC property Gotham and Daniel Cerone, Mentalist showrunner, is co-creator of DC's Constantine? I don't know why I mention that connection. There's no real significance in it.

Every time I see David Goyer's name attached to a project, my anticipation slightly dies, along with any hope for quality writing.

I'm not familiar enough with the character outside of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing series to know if this synopsis is faithful or not. Judging by his look alone it already looks way more faithful than the movie version so I'm in.
