NBC to air the failed Munsters reboot Mockingbird Lane as a Halloween special

Oct. 11, 2012by: Alex Maidy

MOCKINGBIRD LANE, the reboot of THE MUNSTERS that NBC sunk $10 million into developing will not make it to series. But, NBC needs to recoup their investment somehow, which is why we will get to watch it on national television just in time for Halloween.

The show was developed by Bryan Fuller and director Bryan Singer who apparently had differing views on the direction the show should take. The first red flag would have been the choice to make all of the characters human, despite the original series featuring versions of Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Wolfman. Instead, MOCKINGBIRD LANE has Jerry O'Connell playing Herman Munster in human form alongside Portia de Rossi and Eddie Izzard.

NBC declined to comment on the Hollywood Reporter story regarding the airing of the pilot, but it looks like it will premiere on Friday, October 26th at 8pm EST. That is the last Friday before Halloween, so it is a perfect time to dump their investment and see if anything can be salvaged.

NBC is showing their first uptick in viewers in a very long time this season, so it is somewhat surprising that one of their biggest investments could have gotten this far along and be such an utter failure. Unless NBC is trying to see if viewers have any interest before greenlighting the show to series.

I had high hopes for the series. The talent involved alone would have made it at least a worthwhile time waster with the added benefit of seeing some cool Universal monsters again.

Will you be tuning in to see MOCKINGBIRD LANE?

Why the fuck would anyone do a Munsters reboot and not make them monsters? I blame Twilight.

thank god

One of the all time worst decision to make them human. But then again Singer made a movie about WW2 Germany and everyone sounded American...they did not even attempt an accent. Im happy this got dumped.

Damn it!

I was actually really pumped for this show! I'm behind Bryan Fuller in whatever he wants to do! That guy just can't get a break! I was more looking at it as a show inspired by The Munsters instead of a remake. Why the hell would anyone want to watch a faithful remake?
And Eddie Izzard is fucking amazing!

Bryan Singer AND Bryan Fuller? That explains a lot. One (Fuller) has shows that never catch on, while the other (Singer) doesn't take any chances with other people's material resulting in an okay execution but still kind of dull (see X-Men, Superman as examples).

I don't even have to know anything about it. I know why it failed.

Looks like they tried to turn the Munsters into the Addams Family.

The whole point of the Munsters was that they were monsters, visibly.

I'm curious to see it, but it is kind of lame that they all look... normal. Like everyone's said, the Munsters are monsters; none of them look anything but normal in the pics I've seen. It's kind of like that lame CW reboot of Beauty and the Beast that somehow made it to air where the "Beast" is basically a male model.

DERP

"Hey, here's a great idea! Let's take a show that wasn't popular the first time around, failed miserably when we attempted to reboot it in the 90s, and then let's strip away the only things that make it interesting to the few people who will be watching it! It's perfect!"
