Neil Blomkamp might not direct Alien 5 after all

01.23.2017

Man, people were excited about Neil Blomkamp's ALIEN 5. And while his track record is more than a bit spotty (with, I'd argue, only one good film under his belt), the concept art he tweeted was inspiring. So much so, FOX actually commissioned him to start development on the film based on them.

Then...nothing. It was said production was halted because of Ridley Scott's competing PROMETHEUS trilogy (with ALIEN: COVENANT being the second film in that trilogy), and Blomkamp being asked to wait until those had run their course.

However, according to a recent tweet, that may no longer be the case:

I personally don't see this as any big loss. Again, other than DISTRICT 9, I think Blomkamp hasn't made anything worthwhile. And, while not a big fan of what Fincher did to the characters of Newt and Hicks in ALIEN 3, I still feel his concept art came off too "fan-fic-y", and seemed to be made entirely for wish-fulfillment purposes. Still looked better than PROMETHEUS, I guess.

But that's just me. What about you Schmoes? Were you looking forward to Blomkamp's ALIEN 5? If so, you still excited for Scott's prequel series?

While Blomkamp's ALIEN 5 will be released most likely never, Ridley Scott's ALIEN: COVENANT will creep towards your theaters May 19th, 2017.

Extra Tidbit: Fincher had actually asked for Michael Biehn's likeness for a dead dummy in ALIEN 3, but pissed off about his character's fate, Biehn refused. Which is why everything is off-screen and in text.

I enjoy all Blomkamps films

Horrible news in my opinion. I was looking forward to his film a whole lot more than Ridley Scott's film. Biehn and Weaver coming back really got me excited for this. I'm heart broken!

Sad news indeed. I don't care what you haters say but Blomkamp's best is yet to come. Elysuim & Chappie may not be classics but i still enjoyed the heck out of them.

Good. I wasn't in the least excited for this project - can't stand any of his movies - and I only wish the whole ALIENS franchise would end, so it doesn't have to suffer any more.

As much as I disliked the idea of retconing Alien3 out of the official timeline, I still think it's a shame we might not get to see Blomkamp's take on the Alien franchise. Personally I've enjoyed all his films for the most part. As for Alien Covenant, looks promising so far, but it did seem a bit like Scott decided to make his continuation of Prometheus more Alien-y as a result of the first film's criticisms (and possibly Blomkamp's interest to a degree, maybe).

I'm surprised at the amount of hate in the posts for Scott's new film. At least it's taking the series in a somewhat new direction with the engineers and alien origin. What was Blomkamp's film going to do? Maybe it would be an interesting take on the series, or maybe it would just be a rehash of previous films and no better than Alien 3 or 4. If I had details about his story, maybe I'd be upset, but just bringing Ripley and Hicks back doesn't mean the movie would be great.

Awful to hear. Would have been awesome to have seen Ripley, Hicks, and Newt back on the big screen again; plus the art for the film looked badass for it as well.

Even though Blomkamp may have disappointed some fans since District 9, I still enjoyed Elysium, and Chappie, and would like to see him be considered for the new Green Lantern Corps. film.

Very good news. He showed early promise as a director, but failed miserably once given the chance.

I have similar feelings about Denis Villeneuve who showed early promise with Prisoners, then when critics finally saw how they sat on him, they reward a silly space time traveling octopus movie to make up for it. But only once he'd dumbed himself down to their level.

A better tweet would be

Mister x: what are the chances these avatar sequels will ever be made?
Cameron: slim
Mister X: Excellent! Now you can put all your energy in the real terminator 3 and Alien 3.
Cameron: Yes, dont know what i was thinking all these years, i should've made these sequels and countless other action movies i've been linked to already.
Mister X: yeah, we could have had a lot of cool movies from you by now. All we have since true lies is: Titanic, boring underwater documentaries and a enviromental

Well I think that Blomkamp is a nice guy but an overrated director.

Thanks Ridley!

Hope it was worth it just so you could get to make a garbage sequel to the garbage fire that was Prometheus.

Fuck Ridley

This is his fault, at first he didnt want to make a real Alien movie and when the news came Alien 5 would be made he went crying to the studioboss that he also wants to make an alien movie.
I dont know if Blomkamp is able to make a good sequel but i really liked what he wanted to do.

I agree to an extent but you should remember that Ridley Scott created this universe. If he didn't do the original you wouldn't have all the others too!

I agree and maybe i should show more respect, alien is one of the best movies ever but if we make the comparison to children and toys it seems as if there is a toy nobody wants to play with, one kid decides to put all his attention to it and at that moment the other kid becomes jealous and wants it for himself. Maybe this is not the case but you can see Neil is tired of waiting.

Thanks Ridley

You big cry baby! First you wanted to create a new trilogy focusing on the origins of the Xenomorphs. When that didn't work, you decided to make a direct Alien prequel which put Neil's project in the trash.

I'm aware of the track record, but I still wanted him to do this because it seemed like he had a real clear idea of what he wanted to do with the characters and Sigourney was on board with it! Alas, it seems that the only way this could come to pass is if Alien: Covenant is a smash hit. That would give Fox the confidence they need to continue to expand the Alien franchise similar to what's happening with Star Wars and such, albeit a little smaller.

I'm a bit bummed about this I know Elysium was meh but I really enjoyed both district 9 and chappie I think neil would have given the series a much needed breath of fresh air and his concept art only backed that up.i think fox wants to see what happens with the new alien and tbh it wouldn't surprise me if they got ridley scott to direct alien 5, it just seems like ever since he came back neils alien 5 didn't have the umph it once had compared to ridley scott and I'm not really sure why in gods

I think there was alot of good in Elysium. I was quite comfortable with it being overtly political. Some good ideas and imagery, but it just didn't quite come together.

Killing Newt and Hicks off-camera was the mistake that killed the franchise. I was thrilled they were undoing that and finally giving us a continuation of the story from Aliens. I really hope they find a way to make this movie happen.

Ahh. I really liked this idea. It just seemed like such a good fit. Something he's meant to do.
