Neil Marshall to direct the English language remake of Troll Hunter

09.20.2013

Neil Marshall, director of DOG SOLDIERS, THE DESCENT, DOOMSDAY, and the brilliant GAME OF THRONES episode "Blackwater", will now be taking over the English language remake of the 2010 Norweigan found footage movie TROLLHUNTER. The project was long attached to Guillermo Del Toro and will shift to Marshall as soon as he finishes directing duties on the upcoming season of GAME OF THRONES (hint, it is a major episode).

TROLL HUNTER will begin production in early 2014. The remake will be rewritten by Marshall. Here is the plot synopsis of the original Norwegian film:

TROLLHUNTER focused on a group of students investigating a series of mysterious bear killings. They follow a mysterious hunter into the deep woods, learning along the way that he is a troll hunter, and that the creatures killing those bears might not confine their appetites to that species only.

Will the remake follow the found footage/documentary style of the original? That remains to be seen. That is not a format that Marshall has used to date but that is not to say he wouldn't make a switch for the right project. I was a big fan of the original movie which had just the right mix of humor and horror and pretty impressive effects. Marshall has made some enjoyable movies so far, THE DESCENT likely being his best. I am looking forward to what he can do with TROLL HUNTER.

Since it's inevitable that Hollywood will remake every movie ever made, we may as well just skip ahead to the 'Cast this' article.

For the role of Hans, I can only see one person playing that, and that's Bruce Campbell. He's old enough now, plus he can balance the right amount of camp and pathos that Hans character truly needs.

Damn, I was totally against this remake while reading this article but the idea of Bruce Campbell as Hans is really damn good. I'd actually give it a chance if they were smart enough to do it.

Droll Hunter

This film does not begin with a "D". I don't know if Marshall can do it.

Just like most remakes, this is pointless. I watched the original on netflix thinking it was going to be some corny movie but I ended up loving it. I like Marshall. The Decent was amazing but Doomdays was terrible. I'm not too sure how well this movie will do here in American.

Seems like a pointless remake - the original was excellent - but I still want to like Marshall despite the awful Doomsday. I'm sure he can do something cool with this premise.

Kind of a bizarre choice of film to remake, but I like Marhsall. I don't think he's made something I haven't enjoyed going all the way back to Dog Soldiers. I also didn't realize he was attached to Black Sails, but I will have to check that out now.

i dont know. i cant see the American version matching that beautiful landscape from the Norwegian film. which added to the mysticism of the Trolls. the effects were great as well.

First, he's British.
Then, nothing says it won't take place in Norway.
And finally, he's known to do great use of the Irish and Scottish landscapes, so, who knows...

He needs to direct King Conan

I think he's gotten to be a great underrated director. I never saw the original but I'm now looking forward to this one. I loved Centurion and after I saw that I think he should direct the next Conan film. His style is perfect for it

What's the point?

...as in what's the point of this, and also what's the point of me even bothering to complain because useless remakes like this are just gonna keep happening. Maybe the new one will rock, but the original is already excellent so why not just give that a re-release with a bigger marketing push or something? IDFK.

You left off one of marshals best films!!!??

Centurion is awesome!!! Love that movie. Great actors in it as well. Fassbender became one of my favorite new actors because of that movie. Plus, I like Troll Hunter alot but there were parts that I felt were kind of confusing to me. I felt like somethings were left out or lost in translation. So, maybe marshall will round out those parts better.

I'm more interested in the news that he is directing a large episode, like Blackwater, for Game of Thrones Season 4.

I'll let people who are too lazy to read subtitles enjoy the remake. Myself, I fucking love the original, and have absolutely no use for a remake.

I really liked the Norwegian movie. I was really surprised by the effects myself, being a found footage type of movie I expected a really low budget production, but they pulled off some pretty cool stuff.
As far as using the found footage strategy for making this movie, I don't think it really matters. The Norwegian version wasn't dependent on the found footage technique, it just worked with the plot. But if they were going to make a straight film production without the gimmick, this story

I guess Marshallīs will skip the humor in favor of gory kills and gruesome effects. Thatīs ok for me!

I enjoyed Trollhunter and I like Marshall. I'm interested in seeing his version. I think he's a very capable director. It's hard to make a good werewolf movie these days, but Dog Soldiers was great. Terrific story, interesting characters and great cast.

I remember watching the trailer for this a while back. I'll have to watch the film. So their remaking it for American audiences. I would like to see what Guillermo would have done, but Neil Marshall is good too. I'll wait fr a trailer to judge.
