Neill Blomkamp explains Alien concept art; new movie "may happen"

02.10.2015

Alien Neill Blomkamp

Last month DISTRICT 9 and CHAPPIE director Neill Blomkamp shared some very awesome looking ALIEN concept art, and although Blomkamp said it was something he was working on, it didn't sound like the project was moving forward. The director also said the artwork had nothing to do with FOX, and the studio "didn't really even know" what he was up to.

But maybe (just maybe) there is an ALIEN movie in Neill Blomkamp's future. While explaining to Collider why he created the concept art and posted it online, Blomkamp said directing a new ALIEN flick could actually happen.

There was a reason. I wanted to make that film. I still may make that film. [Laughs] It may happen. But I did it on my own time. Like when Chappie was winding down in post and I had available time, I started to work on it. It was also from talking to Sigourney [Weaver] during the making of this. I mean, I asked her about Alien all the time. Alien and Aliens are my favorite films. So I genuinely wanted to make that film, I came up with the story, I came up with way more art than I put out and I never officially spoke to Fox about it, but Fox wanted to make it. So, I kind of touched on it and I didn’t know what to do, and I didn’t know if I was just gonna go leave directing for a whole bunch of time and then I was like, ‘I might as well put some art out.’ But I may make it. I don’t know. That’s where it stands.

Neill Blomkamp helming an ALIEN movie might be a possibility, but it's not as if the project has received the green light from FOX, and the studio could always just use his ideas (for a small fee, of course), with someone else directing. Are you down for a Neill Blomkamp directed ALIEN film?

Neill Blomkamp's CHAPPIE is set to be released on March 6, 2015.

Ummm...Elysium

OK so Aliens is my favorite film of all time. And while I would love to see a proper sequel, considering FOX crapped out Alien 3 just because, I don't think Blomkamp is the right guy to do it. Yes yes we all liked District 9, but Elysium was border-line terrible and Chappie looks like a really boring "Short Circuit". Aliens worked so well because Cameron took an original horror sci-fi concept and merged it with a kick-ass action movie and still managed to give us lasting characters. This

This sequel needs that same feel if its to be a true continuation of that film. Until Blomkamp can show some more consistency, minus his political messages, I'd rather just see him as part of the film in another capacity....maybe the Producer. I want this film to happen but only if its done right.

Dream come true?

Blomkamp's style suits the Alien franchise so this would be an amazing step forward for the franchise. Let Scott continue with his Prometheus fun and let Blomkamp continue with the Alien series. It would be a brilliant move that would satisfy a lot of people.

No. Fuck retcons. Once the retcon door is opened, what's to stop someone coming along later and retconning Blomkamp's retcon simply because they didn't the movie he made? That way lies madness. It'd turn into the next 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' series.

I love Blomkamps work. He needs to bring his brand of scifi to an established franchise. Some of them have really needed a shot of new blood. My choice was for him to do a Star Wars movie of course, but I remember some comments he made a while ago sounding like that didn't interest him. But Aliens does, and his art looked amazing. Bring it Neil, and I cant wait to see Chappie.

Alien3 is part of Ripley's story whether you like it or not. (and I guess a lot of you don't)
Alien Resurrection not so much as it wasn't really Ripley as such so feel free to retcon that movie out of existence, but the original trilogy of Alien movies stands as a complete experience with three suitably different movies, and having Alien3 be "all a dream" would be insulting to all concerned, the audience included.
I'm all for having Blomkamp direct a new Alien movie and by all means have

I'm all for having Blomkamp direct a new Alien movie and by all means have SIgourney in it. She could be Ripley's daughter who's spent years trying to get the truth about her mother, she could be a Ripley android for some reason, she could be a Ripley / Xenomorph hybrid leading an army against a planet of Xenos (if you're happy with Resurrection still being canon).
Personally I dig Alien3, and that's the way the story went regardless. No backsies.

Happy to see a fellow Alien 3 fan. I get that the movies twist gut punch is a step too far for most people, but there's a lot to love in it.

I enjoy quite a bit of Resurrection too. Gotta love Brad Dourif in full creepy mode. But the ending bombs, and it feels disconnected from the rest of the series.

Fuck alien 3 and fuck everyone who decided it would be a great idea to kill off Newt and Hicks from the get-go. Alien 3 basically boils down to Fincher getting his foot in the door as a director and Weaver making extra money off of a new haircut.

@psycheoutsteve _ dude do a little research before you post such asinine comments. The studio severely interfered with Alien 3 & even Fincher disowns the film, so it's clearly not his fault. Like others have said I do enjoy Alien 3 also for what it is. You should at least think twice before you post.

One of the many reasons I like Alien3 is the presence of Brian Glover.
In the distant future at the arse-end of the galaxy there's a fellow Yorkshireman hanging on in there (until he gets eaten) which offers me some sort of hope for the future.

@scorpio77- Dude, practice the English language a little more and actually read something before you respond with an asinine comment yourself . I never said it was Fincher's fault, only that the movie is pretty much only beneficial to him because it lead to greater things for him. That's what getting your foot in the door means; getting an opportunity to show what you're capable of and to start your career in a specific industry. The alien fan certainly didn't benefit from Alien 3, (at least

The alien fan certainly didn't benefit from Alien 3, (at least not IMO) and all due respect to Fincher, but I don't think many people would cry, (at least not the majority of fans) if Blomkamp reduced Alien 3 to cryo-dream.

Do it!

What does FOX have to lose??? I mean, this movie will make $$$ regardless. But an Alien movie that can make money and be a hit....That's a bingo!

Yes, yes, yes but only if:

Ripley wakes up on the escape pod where she escaped with Newt and Hicks at the end of Aliens and she (and the audience) realize that the events in Alien3 and Alien Resurrection were nothing but bad nightmares caused by a malfunction on their cryogenic system (or whatever it was) that kept them alive but allowed them to age... Hicks (Michael Biehn)and Newt (all grown up and recasted) wake up moments later... Start it from here and we are gold!

I would literally kill someone to make this happen. Wipe out the stench of Alien 3 and Resurrection forever!? Hell yes!

Oh sure.

He'd have the right kind of enthusiasm for the job. Obviously if you make another Alien movie, he is the right kind of guy to give the job to.

Now, Sharlto... I actually think he would have fit pretty well in the Alien 3 prison crowd, but I can also see him doing the grungy mechanic Harry Dean Stanton role.

Pretty Please!!!

I love this series so much I'll enjoy any new entry, spinoff, etc even when i know its bad (AVP, A:R) but this is the most exciting coupling of filmmaker and franchise for a while. Please FOX let it happen, you killed the Scott/Cameron Alien 5, this'll make up for that in a big way.

Blomkamp would nail this. I loved his concept artwork for it, plus you know Sharlto Copley would be awesome as the android for the film. And bring on some bad ass Mercs using weapons like what he had in District 9.

This is great news! I've been wanting an Alien 5 for 20 years now. I'm glad that we might finally get one. I'm not a huge Blomkamp fan, but I think his style works for the Alien universe, so I'm down.

Dear Fox, support this guy. He's obviously dedicated his own time and passion making all these artworks. With such dedication, the movie will surely turn out great.

hmmm you bring up an interesting point. yes, i want to see a Neill Blomkamp Alien movie more than Prometheus 2 as well. but if you were Fox, and you had a couple million dollars to give to a director to make a movie, would you give it to Neill Blomkamp, or Ridley freaking Scott?

probably Blomkamp as Ridleys track record over the last (almost) decade has been shotty at best.

Exodus
The Counsellor
Prometheus (i enjoyed it but it was very devisive)
Robin Hood
Body of Lies (i enjoyed it but still wasnt a huge hit)

alot of his movies are no longer bonafide hits.
