Neill Blomkamp's Chappie, starring Sharlto Copley, officially announced with new plot details

08.13.2013

Hot on the heels of his successful second pic, ELYSIUM, director Neill Blomkamp has lined up his next feature, CHAPPIE, which is slated to start production this fall. The film will star Blomkamp regular Sharlto Copley, as well as Dev Patel, Ninja, and Yolandi Visser (from the rap group Die Antwoord). The press release also gives specific detail on the story, which sounds a bit like a sci-fi gangster comedy.

Here's the press release:

Sony Pictures Entertainment and MRC have agreed to co-produce and co-finance Chappie, the next film from writer-director Neill Blomkamp, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures and Hannah Minghella, president of Production for the studio, and MRC.  The film will be marketed and distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures.

Blomkamp will direct the film from a screenplay he has written with Terri Tatchell.  He will also produce the film with Simon Kinberg.  Production is expected to begin this fall.

Chappie tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes.  The film will star Sharlto Copley as the voice of Chappie, with Ninja and Yolandi Visser, voices of the South African Zef counter-culture movement and members of rap-rave duo Die Antwoord, as the two gangsters.

Commenting on the announcement, Belgrad said, “We’re huge fans of Neill Blomkamp – it’s a real thrill to be continuing our relationship with such a visionary and important filmmaker.  Neill has proven that he is a true original voice and we expect that Chappie will strike a chord with worldwide audiences in the same way that District 9 and Elysium have.  We love the script he and Terri have written and we’re looking forward to working again with our friends at MRC.”

“Neill is an incredibly talented and bold artist and we are proud to continue to support his work.  We are looking forward to partnering with the team at Sony on Chappie,” said Modi Wiczyk, co-CEO of MRC.

The announcement comes as Sony Pictures and MRC released Elysium, Blomkamp’s second feature, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, which Blomkamp wrote and directed and also produced with Bill Block and Simon Kinberg.  Elysium opened at #1 in the U.S. this weekend, and was also #1 in Russia, Sweden, Taiwan and Ukraine. Sony Pictures also released Blomkamp’s first feature film, District 9, which took in over $200 million worldwide and earned four Oscar® nominations, including Best Picture.

Sounds like a fun ride. I enjoyed ELYSIUM, but didn't love it, feeling that it fell short of greatness, but Sharlto Copley proved that he's got more than enough charisma, energy, and charm to carry a film, so I'm happy to see him once again taking the lead for Blomkamp, who seems dead set on doing his own thing, rather than jumping into franchise material. That's just fine to me, really, but hopefully the original stories he wants to tell going forward are stronger than ELYSIUM. CHAPPIE sounds like a step in the right direction, though.

CHAPPIE is expected to be released sometime in 2014.

Sounds interesting. Die Antwoord is kinda awesome. It will be interesting to see how they do on the acting front. Especially in a Blomkamp film. High expectations. Ill be looking out for this one...

Blomkamp and Copley are awesome, and I really enjoyed Elysium even if it wasn't on the level of District 9. Die Antwoord is a terrible band, I think, but Yolandi and Ninja are certainly interesting performers, so them being on board is actually a good thing in my eyes.

Die Antwoord's a plus.

how can anyone say a movie as ambitious as elysium sucked - at worst it was very good, and sure it fell "short of greatness" but for fucks sake - not nearly as insulting as everything I'm barraged with on a daily basis. Don't be an asshole man...

no it was terribly shot, the plot was paper thin so many fucking plot holes it was ridiculous, atrocious dialogue, and the performances were average at best besides Sharlto Copley. Also, I was just so disappointed in the writing and the plot after District 9 I expected better it was just asinine and the action scenes were terribly shot as well. Very little character development throughout the film as well so yes this movie sucked it was terrible and a huge disappointment.

After watching Sharlto Copley steal every scene he was in with Elysium, I am definitely excited for this next one. Glad they're heading back to South Africa for Chappie. I think something was lost when they moved the Earth-bound scenes to L.A. If they set it anywhere else, I wonder if so many would be upset when they didn't check in with the rest of the world.
